I pulled into the flow of street traffic and rolled down the window, letting the cool evening breeze brush against my face. My phone lay silently on the passenger seat. Its powered-off screen was pitch black, too dark to show what I looked like right now. I didn't go home. That place was filled with nothing but lies and performances. I would suffocate if I spent even one more second there. I drove down to the riverbank. After parking the car, I walked slowly along the embankment. Hours had passed by now. I could easily picture the chaos unfolding at the hospital. Vincent's panic, Hailey's pained cries, doctors rushing to stabilize her, and the arrival or loss of a new life. But none of it had anything to do with me anymore. At eleven o'clock that night, I turned my phone back on.
