Our marital home had been left vacant for three years when I suddenly received an electricity bill for a hundred dollars.

I sent a screenshot of the bill to my husband.

He replied almost instantly.

Vincent: That's strange. It's probably the old wiring leaking electricity. I'll ask the building management to check it tomorrow.

I smiled and texted back.

Jane: Okay.

Then I immediately called the building management, sounding panicked.

I told them I suspected there was a serious gas leak in the apartment and asked them to shut off the water, electricity, and gas immediately, then notify the fire department.

After hanging up, I drove to our marital home and leisurely parked downstairs.

From inside my car, I watched my husband come rushing out of the building before he even had time to change out of his pajama pants, carrying a heavily pregnant woman in his arms.

Chapter 1
***** Vincent Drake carefully settled the woman in the passenger seat, and only after closing the car door did he have time to straighten his disheveled pajamas. He frantically tugged at his hair and looked around, obviously not noticing my car parked in the shadow of the corner. I picked up my phone and called him. Through the car window, I saw him jump visibly. Staring at the caller ID, he took a deep breath before answering, deliberately softening his voice, "Hello? Jane, babe, why are you calling so late?" As he spoke, he glanced nervously at the pregnant woman in the passenger seat. "I can't sleep. I miss you." I kept my voice light and playful, but my eyes never left his panicked face. "Are you still working overtime at the company? Why does it sound like there's a woman's voice next to you?" Vincent's body went rigid. He subconsciously covered the phone, then quickly let go of it. "Huh? There's no such thing! That's an ad on TV! I'm still swamped with a project, so I'll probably pull an all-nighter again tonight. Get some rest, okay?" The woman in the passenger seat seemed uncomfortable. She shifted slightly and let out a quiet whimper. "What was that sound?" I asked on purpose. "Nothing! Just a stray cat howling outside! Honey, the signal's bad here, I've got to hang up now! I'll come home to be with you tomorrow!" He hung up on me abruptly. I watched his car speed out of the residential compound as if fleeing for its life, my fingers drumming slowly on the steering wheel. 'A stray cat? A pregnant one, at that?' I called my best friend Celeste Montgomery, a partner at a law firm who's sharp, efficient, and takes no prisoners when it comes to divorce cases. "Well, well, what makes Mrs. Drake think of me today?" The rapid clack of her keyboard was loud in the background. "Help me look into someone," I said, gazing at the building that had fallen silent again. "The marital home has been empty for three years, and the electricity bill this month is a hundred dollars." There was a moment of silence at Celeste's end, and the keyboard typing stopped. "Send me the address. Also, can you get hold of Vincent's bank statements, hotel check-in records, and dashcam footage from the past six months?" "I'll try my best." "Don't try. Get them, no matter what, Jane." Celeste's tone was serious. "A hundred dollar electricity bill? That's enough to run a small workshop in that house. I'll get someone to pull the property management security footage for that building right now." After hanging up, I took one last look at the building that had once held all my fantasies about marriage. 'Vincent, you used my money to buy this house and stuck another woman and your kid in it. You're done for.'
