CHAPTER 3

A gentle tap by the air hostess awakened me. I pulled up my eye mask to see that the plane had touched down at the airport. “Finally back,”, I said to myself as I sauntered out of the plane. “We need to hurry,”, I said, turning to Marie, my assistant, who seemed to be struggling with the baggage. “I packed light; why are you struggling? Could it be because you are hungry?” “I am fully full ma’am but look at the luggage you packed for a week's trip” I looked at the five baggages that she seemed to be struggling with and smirked “They aren’t even that much” With that, I put on sunglasses and walked in front of her out of the airport, where a man alighted from the vehicle to greet us. “Avannah Wayne?” The person asked. “Yes,” I responded. “Mr Liam Smith has been waiting for you, kindly enter the car” “Can your car contain all my luggage?” I asked. “There is another car for your luggage as you requested” “So you knew they were a lot”, Marie whispered, and I shrugged. I flipped my hair and entered the car with Marie following suit. “How urgent must it be that Liam Smith couldn’t wait for me to take a rest after my trip, that he requested for an urgent meeting” I asked, taking off my sunglasses as we were now in transit. “He needs your approval before tomorrow as your vote will single-handedly change things..” the man who was driving turned to me “You know everyone wants you on their side” “Is that right?” I scoffed. Who would have thought Liam Smith would need my help when he is in crisis?” I thought to myself. I rested my head on the car window as I remembered what had prompted me to leave. “Liam, you loved me,” I said. “Have I ever?” He said. With tears in my eyes, I made to leave his office, hoping all that was happening was a dream that I would soon wake up from when I got stopped. “The divorce papers,”, He said, handing them over to me. I reached for the papers but he threw them in my face instead. I crouched to pick up the papers and clutched the divorce papers to my hands as I walked out of the company, wiping my tears with my palm. At a distance, I saw Atlas leaning on his car and felt ashamed and turned away, hoping he wouldn’t see me, when someone bumped into me, and I saw myself falling on the floor. “Not again” I muttered as I opened my eyes to take in my surroundings. I tried sitting up but a hand caught me and laid me back on the hospital bed. “The doctor said you have iron deficiency and that’s why you kept fainting. He prescribed some tablets for you to take for the sake of the baby” My hands reached for my tummy. “So you were really Liam’s wife,” Atlas said, holding the divorce papers in his hands. “It’s embarrassing for you to see me in this state,” I said, amidst tears, snatching the paper from him. “You can never embarrass me, Annie,” Atlas said, tucking my hair behind my ears. I broke down completely in tears as realisation hit me that I wasn’t dreaming. Atlas pulled me closer to him, and at that moment, I pulled him closer and tightened my grip as I cried on his shoulder. I had asked Atlas if I could stay overnight at the hospital as I had nowhere to go, I needed to gather my thoughts. “I’ll come see you tomorrow” Atlas had told me before he left. After Atlas left and pondering on how Liam had shattered my dream, I reached for my belly, and after another few sobs, I had signed the divorce papers. The next morning, I had left the hospital before Atlas could come and gone to the house to drop the divorce papers. “You should have known your place and lived in oblivion as you were expected to”, Kate had spat out. “If you don’t mind, can you make me pasta before you leave?” One of the brothers had said. I looked at them and at the house as my wedding portraits had been replaced with those of Liam and April. “How sad, who will now make my dishes?” His mom said. Ignoring them, I walked out and went to my uncle to break the news. “What next?” My uncle had asked. “We have arrived” The man interrupted my thoughts. I raised my head from the car window; Marie stepped down from the car to open the door for me; I alighted from the car to stand in front of the same company where my life had been shattered. Putting back my sunglasses, I adjusted my exotic blazer and walked into the company. “This way” The man pointed out. Following his steps, something caught my attention and I halted. “Miss Wayne?” The man called out but I ignored him. I removed my sunglasses to look clearly, it was a huge poster of Atlas and Kate, indicating a wedding. “What’s this?” I asked, turning to the man and pointing at the poster. “Mr Liam’s sister is getting married,” he said. “To Atlas Windsor?” “Yes” I let out a breath and turned away from the man. “Marie, book a taxi and let’s get out of here” I instructed. I started walking towards the door, away from the company. “Ma’am”, I heard the man’s voice calling out, but I ignored him. Annie?” The name made me stop abruptly, and I turned back to see Atlas standing “You are back”, he smiled. I looked closely at him; so much had changed in the past years; he had gotten more…how should I put it…gorgeous? “Miss Avannah Wayne, thank you for coming to meet me,” Another familiar voice said. I took in a deep breath before turning around to see Liam. He gasped at the sight of me. “Hannah?” I rolled my eyes before faking a smile. “Nice to meet you, Liam, my name is Avannah Wayne,” I said, stretching my hand.
