CHAPTER TWO NEXT MORNING SOPHIA'S POV I nervously stepped into the sleek, modern skyscraper that housed the office of New York billionaire, Liam Hemsworth. As I entered the lobby, the atmosphere seemed to shift, sending a shiver down my spine. I suddenly heard a voice "hey, I guess you must be Mr Liam's new personal assistant, right?", ...I turned and put my hands over my face. Apparently, I had made my way halfway in without noticing the lady by the desk in the bubbly lobby. "Good morning" I mumbled even when she was frowning at me. "Sophie, I guess? '', she asked again, totally ignoring my greetings. Is this how these ladies act? A mere receptionist! I scoffed inwardly. "Mr. Hemsworth is expecting you, his office is on the top floor, then proceed to the top door on your right. Make sure to knock before entering," she said with a smile that was obviously fake! "Uhm, thank you." I replied and she rolled her eyes. I couldn't help but feel like she's a jealous b***h! I eventually walked away. I approached the elevator that would take me to the top floor. I mumbled to myself, "You've got to be in your best behavior, Sophia, so, you don't get kicked out of your first resume." As the door opened on the penthouse level, I made my way towards the office I assumed as his and knocked. Once I heard his voice, I took a deep breath and walked into a world of luxury. The expansive office was styled with polished marble floors and floor-to-ceiling windows that gave breathtaking views of the city below. At the large desk sat Liam Hemsworth, a man known for his wealth and power in New York City. "Ms. Sophia, I presume?" he asked, his piercing gaze meeting mine. I nodded nervously, my heart pounding. This is the first time I'm seeing Liam Hemsworth, and it feels like it's all a dream, and I'm going to wake up soon. "Welcome! I trust you understand the gravity of the responsibilities you're about to assume?" He asked in a cold voice that sent shivers down my spine. His ocean blue eyes peered into mine. I mustered a confident smile, "Thank you, Mr. Hemsworth. I'm eager to contribute and learn." I said confidently, not allowing his looks to get into my head. "Time will tell if you can keep up with me, Ms Sophia." he replied, his tone grim and stern. I felt afraid for a moment because of that sentence, but I pushed it to the back of my head. "Your duties are outlined in the manual on your desk. Familiarize yourself and ensure efficiency. I don't tolerate incompetence and might get you fired within the blink of an eye!." He threatened. I swallowed hard before making my way out of his office. After settling in my office that was right opposite his, I glanced through the intricate web of tasks, making sure of no mistakes. I don't want to get sacked. In the afternoon, I braved a knock on his office door. "Mr. Hemsworth, I've compiled the reports you requested," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. He glanced at the papers for a second, his expression unchanged. "Right, leave them on the desk." I sighed inwardly in exhaustion, I had only done half the work he wanted for today but, determined to leave a good impression, I pressed on. "I'll have the other reports compiled and sent to you as soon as they're ready sir". I uttered again. His steely look hardened more, as he replied, "I'm a very busy man, Ms Sophia, you're here to streamline processes, and make things move faster. Remember that." He gritted out and I replied almost immediately. "Yes sir!" I uttered before scurrying out of his office. ** Days turned into weeks, and my anxiety began to chip away at the walls, Mr. Hemsworth had built around himself. I noticed he had started acknowledging my presence beyond the professional realm. A nod of approval here, a rare compliment there. It became evident that beneath the Stoic demeanor, there was a man who valued competence and dedication. The clock struck 8 PM as I sat hunched over my desk, determined to complete the remaining reports that had eluded me throughout the day. I could feel the weight of Mr. Hemsworth's disappointment earlier and the tone when he asked me to finish them up. As I diligently worked, the office gradually emptied, leaving only the hum of the air conditioning and the soft tap of my fingers on the keyboard. Once I finally printed the last report, I glanced at the clock, realizing I would need to bring the documents to his house as instructed. Arriving at his luxurious residence, the gatekeeper allowed me in saying, Mr. Hemsworth had already informed him I would be coming. I got to the main door. I hesitated for a while before ringing the doorbell. The door swung open, revealing a grand foyer fitted with modern artworks. Liam appeared at the top of the grand staircase, his expression unreadable as usual. But, I'm slowly getting used to him. After all, he's my boss. "Mr. Hemsworth, I've completed the reports," I announced, offering the stack of papers to him. He made his way back inside with the doors open, and I was left standing with my arms stretched out wondering where the hell he's going. "Follow me," he instructed. Wish I reluctantly did. He led me through the expansive living room to a study adorned with leather-bound books and another very large desk. As I set the reports down, I noticed a soft giggle echoing from the couch at the side. I turned to see a petite figure, a cute little girl with wide blue eyes and a cascade of golden curls. She looked up at me, a playful grin on her face. "Daddy, who's this?" the girl asked, with her curiosity evident on her face. Mr. Hemsworth sighed, "Sophia, meet my daughter, Emily. Emily, this is Sophia, my new personal assistant." He introduced me and I noticed something. His voice was as calm as ever. Wow! Emily's eyes lit up, and she extended a tiny hand towards me. "Hi, Sophia! Are you going to work with Daddy all the time?" I smiled warmly, shaking Emily's hand. "Hi, Emily! Yes, I'll be helping your dad with his work." Mr. Hemsworth interrupted our discussion, "Enough chatter, Emily. Sophia, you should leave now. Ensure this doesn't happen again." I nodded my head. I'll always do well to finish my work on time. I walked towards the door, Emily tagged along, her chatter unstoppable. "Sophia, do you like ice cream? Daddy always says work is more important than ice cream, but I disagree." I couldn't help but laugh. "I love ice cream, Emily. What's your favorite flavor?" "Chocolate chip cookie dough! We should have ice cream together sometime," Emily suggested with a mischievous grin. "That sounds like a plan, Emily. Maybe we can have an ice cream day soon."
