CHAPTER 1 — “Three Years, One Sentence"
The afternoon light over Jinhai University was soft, almost deceptive.
It painted the tall academic buildings in a calm golden glow, as if the world was gentle, as if nothing sharp could happen under such a sky.
But Lin Tian had learned long ago that beauty in Jinhai University was just decoration over cruelty.
He stood near the central plaza fountain, one hand holding a slightly wrinkled paper bag, the other resting loosely by his side.
Inside the bag was a small box.
A bracelet.
Simple silver, nothing luxurious. He had saved for it through months of night shifts, delivery runs, and exhausted mornings when sleep never felt enough.
Three years of relationship should end with something meaningful, he had thought.
Even if it ended.
At least let it end gently.
But Jinhai University did not believe in gentle endings.
It believed in audiences.
And today, the audience had already arrived.
Whispers drifted through the crowd gathering around the plaza.
At first, it was only a few students pretending to pass by casually.
Then more came.
Then even more.
Phones came out like insects waking up to light.
Camera apps opened silently.
Livestream notifications blinked.
Everyone here had the same instinct.
Something was about to break.
And breaking things was entertainment.
Lin Tian noticed them, but he did not react.
A familiar voice came from behind the crowd.
"Looks like everyone is already here."
The crowd parted slightly.
Zhao Kai walked in.
Expensive shoes. Clean white shirt. A luxury watch.
Two students trailed behind him, more like shadows than companions.
People automatically made space for him without realizing it.
That was how authority worked in Jinhai University.
Lin Tian saw him.
And for the first time that day, something inside him tightened slightly.
Because he already knew what this meant.
Zhao Kai stopped a few steps away, smiling faintly.
"Lin Tian," he said, as if greeting someone he had not seen in a long time.
Lin Tian did not answer immediately.
He looked past Zhao Kai.
And then he saw her.
Su Yuyan.
She stood slightly behind Zhao Kai, not hiding, not stepping forward.
Like someone had already decided where she belonged.
Her hair was neatly tied, her expression calm in a way that felt rehearsed.
Lin Tian's grip on the paper bag tightened slightly.
For a moment, no one spoke.
The crowd waited.
Zhao Kai turned his head slightly toward her.
"Go ahead," he said softly. "Don't waste time."
Su Yuyan exhaled lightly.
Then she stepped forward.
That single movement changed everything.
She stopped in front of him.
Close enough that he could see her clearly.
The face he had once memorized in silence.
The face he had once believed would always be familiar.
But today, it felt like looking at someone through glass.
"Lin Tian," she said.
He responded quietly.
"Yuyan."
A flicker crossed her eyes.
It was gone too quickly to be certain.
Then she spoke again.
"I asked you to come here because I wanted to end something properly."
The crowd leaned in.
Lin Tian's expression did not change.
"What are you ending?" he asked.
"Our relationship," she said.
Lin Tian blinked once.
Not shocked.
Around them, whispers erupted.
"Wait… she really said it?" "No way, three years just like that?" "Is she serious?"
Phones zoomed closer.
Some students even smiled slightly, already enjoying the unfolding collapse.
Lin Tian looked at her for a long moment.
Three years of memories did not flash in his mind like fireworks.
They came slowly.
Like old film reels refusing to stop playing.
Late-night messages.
Shared meals.
Cold winters where she held his hand without speaking.
Exams they survived together.
Days they struggled through poverty together.
Three years stitched together by effort that never felt equal, but always felt real.
He spoke quietly.
"Three years," he said.
Su Yuyan's expression tightened slightly.
"I know how long it has been."
Her voice was steady.
Like she had repeated it in her mind many times before today.
"I thought about this for a long time," she continued. "We are not suitable anymore."
Lin Tian let out a slow breath.
"So it was always about suitability," he said.
Su Yuyan avoided his eyes for half a second.
Then corrected herself.
"This is not about blame."
"I just… want a different future."
Lin Tian nodded slightly.
"What kind of future?"
She hesitated for the first time.
Then she answered.
"One I don't have to struggle in."
Lin Tian looked at her quietly.
Then he asked softly.
"And I am part of struggle."
She did not answer immediately.
That silence was the answer.
Behind her, Zhao Kai stepped forward slightly.
A smile forming at the corner of his mouth.
As if enjoying a performance that had reached its climax.
Su Yuyan finally spoke again.
"I don't want to live like before."
Her voice softened slightly.
"I can't."
Lin Tian closed his eyes briefly.
Then opened them.
When he spoke again, his tone was calm.
"I see."
That was all.
No collapse.
No emotional explosion.
Just acceptance.
And that acceptance made something shift in the atmosphere.
Because it was not what they expected.
Su Yuyan frowned slightly.
As if waiting for more.
Something louder.
But Lin Tian did not give it.
Instead, he looked at her once more.
Then said quietly,
"Is that everything?"
Zhao Kai chuckled softly.
He stepped forward.
"Actually," he said, "there's one more thing."
Lin Tian turned his gaze slightly toward him.
Zhao Kai reached into his pocket slowly.
Then he pulled out a stack of cash.
Thick.
Neatly arranged.
He looked at Lin Tian.
And smiled.
"Consider this compensation," he said lightly. "For the time you wasted."
Then he flicked his wrist.
The money dropped at Lin Tian's feet.
A few students laughed immediately.
Others recorded faster.
Someone whispered, "This is insane…"
Zhao Kai's voice followed.
"Pick it up."
"Or don't. Doesn't matter."
More laughter spread.
Su Yuyan stood still.
Her eyes were lowered slightly.
Lin Tian looked down.
The money lay at his feet.
The kind of solution the world always preferred.
Zhao Kai crossed his arms.
The crowd waited too.
This was the moment.
The final confirmation.
Humiliation completed.
Lin Tian bent slightly.
The crowd leaned in instantly.
"This is it," someone whispered. "He's taking it."
But Lin Tian did not reach for the money.
He straightened again.
The money remained untouched.
A quiet silence fell over the plaza.
Even laughter reduced slightly.
Zhao Kai's expression changed.
Su Yuyan finally looked at him fully again.
Lin Tian spoke.
"I don't need it."
"And I don't need this either."
He lifted the paper bag slightly.
The bracelet inside shifted softly.
That simple movement broke the expected narrative.
Zhao Kai's voice sharpened.
"Stop."
Lin Tian paused.
But did not turn.
Zhao Kai stepped forward.
"I said stop."
Lin Tian answered without looking back.
"I heard you."
Then he walked.
A few students laughed again.
Trying to restore the atmosphere.
"He's acting tough now?" "Still broke though."
Zhao Kai raised his voice slightly.
"You think ignoring money makes you different?"
The plaza quieted again.
Lin Tian stopped walking.
Still did not turn.
Zhao Kai continued.
"In this world, dignity is something poor people use to lie to themselves."
"Pick it up. At least be honest."
Lin Tian stood still.
Then he spoke.
"I didn't lose dignity today."
"I lost three years of blindness."
That sentence landed differently.
The laughter weakened.
Even phones paused for a fraction.
Su Yuyan's fingers tightened slightly at her side.
Zhao Kai's expression darkened faintly.
Lin Tian finally turned his head slightly.
Enough for his voice to carry back.
"Keep your money."
"I hope it helps you sleep better."
Then he walked again.
This time no one stopped him.
The wind shifted slightly as he moved through the plaza.
Su Yuyan remained standing.
Zhao Kai said something beside her, but she did not respond immediately.
Her eyes followed Lin Tian's figure.
Until it became smaller.
And for the first time since this began…
She did not feel satisfied.
Only uncertain.
Lin Tian continued walking.
Past the fountain.
Past the gathering crowd.
Past the noise that tried to pretend it mattered.
And then the sky changed.
First, a single drop.
Then another.
Then more.
Rain began falling over Jinhai University.
Students began moving.
Some laughing still.
Some dispersing.
The recording continued.
But Lin Tian did not look back.
He walked through the rain without speed.
Without hesitation.
The paper bag in his hand became heavier as water soaked through it.
But he did not open it.
Behind him, voices echoed faintly.
Laughter.
Comments.
Fragments of entertainment.
But they grew distant with every step.
Until they were no longer part of his world.
Only sound.
Not meaning.
Lin Tian walked until the campus lights blurred through rain.
Until the plaza disappeared behind buildings.
Until only the sound of falling water remained.
He stopped under a tree.
Looked up.
Rain falling through leaves.
He closed his eyes briefly.
Three years.
One sentence.
One ending.
He exhaled slowly.
And whispered to himself,
"…That's fine."
