Flashback
It has been six months since I moved to my new home in New Moon Pack. I was nervous at first. Meeting my mate, leaving my home pack, my family, my life, becoming a Luna.. so many changes all at once. Everyone has been great here though. My mate and his family have welcomed me completely. It is nice to know that they want to get to know me and want me in their family. My parents helped me move. They came here a few days after I did and decided to stick around to help me get used to things. They stayed for three days and then had to go back to the pack. My entire family, however, ended up coming back for my Luna ceremony with Alexander. It was truly a beautiful night and having my parents, my two big brothers, and my grandparents there meant the world to me.
It has been five months since the ceremony. My parents were finally able to visit again this week. They came for a couple of days and just left yesterday evening. It was so great to see them again. My parents and I have always had an amazing relationship, and I am so glad that, despite me being in a different pack, we have managed to maintain that level of closeness.
It is always hard saying goodbye to them, so I was emotionally spent by the time they left. They said they would let me know they got home, but unfortunately, I fell asleep before receiving any call. I grabbed my phone and looked at it, freezing on the spot at what I saw, or rather, at what I did not see.
“What is it babe?” Alexander said from beside me.
“Umm I have not heard from my parents. It only takes three hours to get home and they promised me they would let me know when they got there.”
Alexander knew I was worried. We have not been together long, but he is able to read me like a book already. “Well, you will not know anything unless you try reaching out. Why don’t you give them a call?”
I looked at him, worry creeping deep inside me. I dialed my dad's phone and it rang five times, only to go through to his voicemail. I hung up without leaving a message and immediately tried my mom's cell. Once again, after a few rings, it goes through to voicemail. Okay, now I am really starting to worry.
“Neither of them is answering,” I looked up at Alexander with what I am sure looked like complete panic in my eyes.
“Hun, try your brothers or the pack house. I am sure they are there and safe.”
I immediately picked up my phone and called my oldest brother John. “Hey baby girl.” I finally felt a little relief.
“Hey John John. I just called to check in on mom and dad. They said they would let me know when they made it home last night, but I have not heard from them yet. Before you ask, yes, I tried calling both, but neither answered. It just went straight to voicemail both times.”
“Hmmm… I am not sure what is going on, baby girl, but I will mindlink Trent and him and I will go check on them.” Trent was the middle child out of the three of us. Both him and John are amazing brothers.
“Sounds good. Will you call me when you find out anything?”
“You bet my girl. You will be my first phone call, I promise.” He hung up the call, and I sat back on the bed. Waiting was going to be difficult, but I would have to. I knew John and Trent would make sure Mom and Dad were okay.
It has been four hours. I have not heard anything from my brothers in four hours. I can only keep myself busy for so long, then I start to freak out. I was two seconds away from going into a panic attack.
“Luna?” I heard someone come over the mind link, “Your brothers have just arrived at the border. I am letting them through to the pack house.”
“Thank you for letting me know. I will meet them outside.” This cannot be good if they are coming here instead of just calling. I walked outside and they had just pulled up and were getting out of the car. Both look at me, then look at each other.
“Come on guys, what is it? What is wrong? Did you find mom and dad?” I asked them, rapidly firing questions.
“Baby girl, we should sit down,” John said to me with a look on his face I could not figure out.
“John, I am fine right here, just tell me what’s going on!” I screamed at him.
Both him and Trent had swollen, bloodshot eyes. I knew it was bad. “Brooke, when we went to check on Mom and Dad, they were not home, so we went to the edge of the pack lands and over the border. About ten minutes after leaving the pack, we found Mom and Dad’s car on the side of the road. It looked like a hit and run at first, but when we got closer, both mom and dad had been shot with silver bullets. I am sorry, baby girl, but mom and dad have both died.”
I started hyperventilating. “I.. I.. can’t.. breathe..” I said in between the rapid, short breaths I was trying to take. No air was coming in. My lungs were not working. Both of my parents are dead. The last things I saw were my brothers' sad, worried faces, before my eyes rolled back into my head, and I passed out.
End of Flashback
I looked at Selene, tears flowing down my cheeks. This memory is by far one of the worst memories of my life. I have tried not to think about it for a while. “What happened to them?” I asked Selene, “Investigators said it was just a rogue attack.”
She wiped the tears from my cheeks. “Things are not always as simple as they appear, Brooke. Your parents were amazing warriors, both of them. They would have fought to the end of the earth to get back to you, John, and Trent. This was not random. This was a coordinated attack.”
“But why, Selene? Why?! I do not understand. My parents were warriors. They were not ranked or anything like that. Were they great warriors? Absolutely! But why go to these lengths to get rid of my parents?” I asked her, completely lost as to what happened.
“Your parents were not simple warriors, Brooke. There was much more to them than what you or your brothers knew. They were extremely important, not just to your pack, but to all werewolves,” she looked at me, smiling gently.
“I don’t get it, Selene, I don’t.”
“Sweetie, I cannot tell you everything. I can only give you hints that I hope will lead you in the right direction. Just know, their deaths were not supposed to happen, and this started that ripple I spoke about earlier. Everything that happened afterwards was a direct effect of this one event,” she said, rubbing my back, trying to help me calm down.
“There is one thing I do not understand though. Why are you telling me this?”
“Brooke, your parents were not meant to die. You were not meant to die. All three of you are supposed to have a long and happy life ahead of you. With all three of your deaths came changes that were not meant to be. I want to send you back to try to prevent these events from taking place.” I looked up at her completely stunned and at a loss for words.
“Umm.. send me back?”
“Yes, Brooke. Think of it as a rebirth. You are the one person who can change all these events. If we do not, that ripple is going to continue altering futures, and that is something we need to stop. Now, I intend to send you back several years to a point in time when some of these events were put in motion. I cannot give you much information, unfortunately. I will need you to try to figure some things out on your own. You will not be completely alone, however. You will have Allie with you, and I will be around to help if necessary. I am also blessing you with a gift. I cannot tell you what it is, but you will find out when it is needed.”
I looked up at Selene, completely exhausted and drained. “Are you sure I’m the one?”
“Yes dear, I have never been surer of anything before.” I looked over at Allie and she looked at me with this fierce determination I had not seen in her before.
We can do this, Brooke. I will not leave you, my friend. Together, I know we can solve this and put our lives and the others affected back on track. We got this girl! Allie said, leaning up against me.
“Okay Selene, I will do my best to help you and set things straight.”
“I am so proud of you, Brooke. I know this is hard, but I also know this is the right decision. Remember, Allie will be with you the whole time, and I will be watching and promise to be there if needed.” With that, my vision started to spin, and I passed out, unsure of what I would see once I opened my eyes again.
