CHAPTER TWO

Mrs lewis walks in from the sitting room, “What’s going on here” Caren's mom calls out as she approaches them, Caren looks at her mom approaching but Marcus doesn’t, he brings his hand from his face and arranges his suit.

“You’ll regret that” he winks at Caren.

“Nothing is going on here, Mrs Lewis, just having a friendly conversation with my fiance, if I might say,” Marcus says, as he turns around to face Caren’s mom with a smile.

“Of Course you can, I thought I heard Caren shout, that’s why I rushed out, I hope I am not interrupting anything,” Mrs. Lewis says as she pulls Marcus in for a hug.

“Behave yourself” Mrs Lewis mutters to Caren still hugging Marcus,

“Of Course not, ma’am you are not” Marcus replies as he pulls out of her embrace, “l have to go now, but I will definitely stop by on Sunday to say hello to my fiancé, and might even take her somewhere nice, that’s if you don’t mind”.

“I don’t mind Marcus, you are so sweet” Mrs Lewis takes Marcus's hand and taps the back as she smiles.

“Have a wonderful day Mrs Lewis, and take good care of yourself my love” Marcus winks at Caren as he walks out.

“f**k off bastard!!!” Caren yells at him.

“Caren don’t say that, he is going to be your husband” Mrs Lewis chides Caren.

“Mom, how can you say that, you and dad are selling me to the highest bidder, I hate him”

“You don’t have to love him my dear, just marry him, we need his money, you know that, except you want to settle for Mr Chank, what do you say?” Mrs Lewis says, crossing her hands over her chest.

“Ewwww … mom!!! … that old pig!!! … he is as old as dad”

“Well he is quite wealthy”

“Mom, I don’t give a f**k, whose wealthy or not, they can go to hell with their filthy money”

“Don’t you dare use that tone on me young lady, don’t you dare!!!, this decision is not easy for me, but we need this to get by, who is going to fund your expensive school, or your outrageous closet allowance or even your trips?”

“Mom, we can cut down on all those things, we can even sell some, common” Caren raises her hands.

“Are you crazy!!!” Mrs Lewis yells at caren.

“Mom, I just…”

“Will you shut it, what’s gonna happen to Prissy, have you thought about that, how long would we sell to pay off Prissy medical bills, or even a transplant, we would have to sell even this house, what about the company, what’s going to happen to it? … Have you even thought about it?” Mrs lewis says.

“I don’t know mom” Caren replies as she looks away from her mom.

“Of Course you don’t know, you don’t know anything, gosh, Prissy would have accepted this offer without even thinking of it, she wouldn’t even blink, or behave the way you are doing right now. Marcus will change your life, he has taken over his fathers company, do you know how much that company is worth? … do you know how long, my friends have tried to hook their daughters up with Marcus? … Ofcourse you don’t know anything Caren”

“Mom, don’t talk like that, you don’t understand”

“Of Course I understand, you and Marcus dated while you were in high school, and you f****d it up obviously, with your disdainful behavior, so you should be glad that Marcus wants to take you back after everything you did to him while you were in highschool. He came down to your level to date you and you messed things up, and you are here behaving like a virgin bride we are about to give to a mafia lord. I really don’t understand why it’s so difficult for you to accept this arrangement or is there something else i should know?” Mrs Lewis says as she peered into Caren’s eyes.

“you won’t understand mom” Caren looked away from her mom's wandering eyes. She never never told her mom about the incident with Marcus. She knew her mom would never believe her anyway, so she didn’t think it was necessary.

When she informed her mom she was dating Marcus back then in highschool, she was so happy and never failed to announce to her click of friends or rather click of women, how her daughter was dating the son of a billionaire and how they would end up married after college and spend happily ever after, her friends were jealous Ofcourse, because everyone knew how much Mrs Lewis could exaggerate any story, so adding a little juice to her relationship with Marcus wasn’t surprising. The news about her break up with Marcus spread like wild fire, especially among her mothers group of friends, and she became a laughing stock among them, they made up stories of how care was not fit to date someone like Marcus or was it the story of how Caren slept with Marcus best friends, Caren didn’t care about the stories anyway because she knew that they were lies, but her mom didn’t, so Caren had to bear the brunt of her mothers actions. Her mom never failed to remind her how she f****d things up with Marcus and with that behavior she might never be able to keep a man. Caren wasn’t surprised though, because her mother always saw her as a terrible period someone that needs fixing.

“Oh well!!!, if you don’t want to say anything, it’s fine, but deal with whatever issues you have with Marcus, because you are going to Marry him whether you like or not, so deal with it, do you understand?”

“Yes mum, I do” Caren says

“Good, I don’t want to hear you youngsters had another quarrel” Mrs Lewis said, as she turned and was walking away, “ uhmmm, before I forget, be a good girl and wear something nice or even sexy on Sunday, you heard Marcus saying he is coming to take you to somewhere nice right?” She paused and faced Caren .

“Mom, I’m not interested in going anywhere with that man” Caren looked away.

Mrs lewis stepped closer to Caren grabbing her arm and whispered in her ears, “That man is going to be your husband very soon, behave yourself, wear something nice and do whatever he says, you can even be a good daughter and start making grandchildren from Sunday, I DON'T CARE!!!… but if you f**k this up for me, I am going to make your life a living hell, do you understand me?”

“Mmmmm, mom you are hurting me” Caren whimpered, feeling the pain from her mothers manicured nails piercing her skin.

“I asked you a question, do you understand me!” Mrs lewis tightened her grip on Caren’s arm.

“Yeee… yesss… yesss… yes mom, I understand, I won’t f**k this up” Caren said as a tear dropped from her eye.

“Good! … now run along, I have to go now, I have a yoga class with the ladies” Mrs Lewis said as she let go of Caren arm and walked away.

Caren stared at the woman she called mother all her life, she could not understand why her mother treated her differently from Prissy, it was evident. All her life her mother preferred Prissy over her, and treated Prissy better. As Caren walked back into her room, she put her back to the door as she slammed it, and went down to the ground and wept. Her mom always used every opportunity to make her feel less of herself, and always showed everyone how wonderful and special Prissy was. And now she could see her life on a stand still, she knew her mom would make her life a living hell as she said she would if she didn’t go through with this marriage. She knew her mom had a reputation to protect, and also she knew her mom didn't want her friends to know that they were broke, they would push her away and exclude her from all activities and functions.

Despite her show of affection towards Prissy, Caren and Prissy's closeness never withered, they loved each other dearly. As Caren looked up to the various photos of her and Prissy plastered on the walls above her table, she held her hair back and smiled. She could remember when she wanted to go to college, she begged her mom to put her in the same College as Prissy, but she refused, she could still remember her mom telling her that Bradley high was not the school for girls like her, although Caren knew that Bradley high was an elite college filled with sophisticated kids of the elite, she didn’t understand how her mom found Prissy worthy of going to such school, and she wasn’t, after all, at that time they were not broke. It only took Prissy intervention and also her dad's pleas that made her mother agree for Caren to go to the same college with Prissy, even after she started going to college, her mom never acknowledged her efforts and downplayed it. Up till this moment Caren wanted to find ways to please her mother, so if marrying Marcus would make her mother love her, she would do it.
