I can't recall the exact moment my feelings shifted, but I know it happened somehow. My heart races whenever I see my brother, Austin. The truth is agonizing – I'm in love with him. It's wrong, taboo, and unacceptable, which is why I've kept it hidden, locked deep within. I've tried to suppress these feelings, to shake them off, but I couldn't. Every little thing about Austin draws me in. The way he talks, his laughter, his kindness – it all triggers a rush of emotions.Simply laying eyes on him unleashes a flood of dopamine in my brain. It's like my heart beats exclusively for him.My secret is too shameful to share, too terrifying to admit aloud. Yet, I can't deny the emotions that consume me.

Chapter One: The Unwelcome past
Author’s POV "Mia? Mia? Mia!!!" Her mother touched her shoulders, and she jolted back to the present. "Yes, Mummy." "Mummy will be back, okay? I need to grab some milk from the store. You know what to do?" "Yes, Mummy, I'll lock all the doors of the car until you're back," Mia replied, and her mother nodded. "Good, I'll be back in five minutes." "Okay, Mummy." As soon as her mother exited the car, Mia locked the doors manually, just as her mother had taught her. She stared out the window and saw a puppy wagging its tail after an old lady. "What if my Mum buys me a puppy? I want a white one. What will I name it? Mr. Waggy will move to a bigger house. What kind of house do I want? Will Mummy want a bigger house? I'll work hard so that I can get her a big house," she thought. Honk! Honk!! Honk!!! She could faintly hear the sound of a car but wasn't paying attention. "Mia! Mia!!" She could hear her name, but the voice was lost in the background of her thoughts. She heard the heavy knocks on the window and jolted out of her thoughts. She stared out of the window, and her mum was right there, with fear and tears in her eyes. "Mia!!! Get out!!!!" her mother screamed, but before she could make any move, it was too late. The crash happened. She watched in horror as her mother was slammed to the curb by another car. "Mum!!!!" she screamed as the car she was in tumbled in the air and crashed to the ground. "Mum," she whimpered before blacking out. _Mia's POV_ I suddenly woke up from my sleep, breathing heavily. Sweat poured down my face as I tried to calm my racing heart. That dream... again. I haven't had it for a while, and I thought I was over it, but I guess not. I stared at the ADHD medication my mum had placed on the table by my bed because, as expected, I don't always remember to take it. I took the pills and washed them down with the glass of water. I stood up, walked towards my huge mirror, and stared at my disheveled self. "I look like crap in the mornings." "Come on, Mia, it's the first day of college, and you're going to kill it," I cheered myself on. "Let's do this!!" I turned on my speaker, and The Weeknd's "Sacrifice" came on... one of my favorites. I brushed my teeth, had my bath, and got dressed. "Gosh, it's a mess in here," I thought, looking at my closet. "Oh well..." I shrugged and picked an outfit to wear. Normally, I'd just grab the first thing I see, but I wanted to make an effort today. "I don't wanna sacrifice For your love, I try" I sang along while getting dressed. "Mia!!" I faintly heard my name. "I don't wanna sacrifice But I love my time" I continued singing, but the music was suddenly turned off. "Mia!!!" I heard my name and was frightened. "Oh my gosh, Mum!! You scared me." "You're late," she said, not in a judging tone. "Your brothers are ready." "I'm also ready, Mum." "And why are you still here? I thought your flight was this morning," I complained. My parents bought a house close to school and insisted my brothers and I live together. I wanted to dorm with my best friend Jessie, but my dad said the Lee family should always stick together. Apparently, both my parents attended Stanford, though they didn't know each other then. It's a family tradition. "Mum decided to help me get settled in a week ago and refuses to leave." "You'll have to eat breakfast on the way to school; be down in a minute. I'll order an Uber and go to the airport after dropping you off." I sighed. Let me introduce myself properly. My name is Mia Lee, the only daughter and black member of my family. My mum, Erica Lee, is white, and my dad, Fred Lee, is Korean. My parents met when my mum vacationed in Korea. She loves telling us how magical it was. My dad, son of a conglomerate, relocated to the US to expand the business and be with my mum. His family initially disapproved but eventually agreed. Years later, my parents had my three older brothers. You might wonder how a black girl is part of a white and Asian family. Honestly, I've wondered too. I don't remember my childhood, but I recall being bullied and called adopted. My mum told me the truth: I'm adopted. My biological mother and mum were best friends since high school until my parents got into an accident. After the accident, I was adopted by my mum without hesitation. That's how I became part of the Lee family. Short right? Yeah, I also don’t really know much about it. After checking myself in the mirror one last time, I proceeded to my door when it burst open. My brother Jeremy walked in, frantically searching for something. "What are you doing?" I asked. "Can I borrow your laptop? It's urgent," he replied. "What's wrong with yours?" "I dropped it in the bathtub filled with water," he admitted. I rolled my eyes. "Fine, you can borrow mine if you drop me at school instead of Mum. Deal?" "Uh...no," Jeremy said, walking out of my room. That's my brother Jeremy, the self-proclaimed non-nerd of the Lee family. He's a sophomore, a year older than me. I walked out of my room, dejected, and found my brother Mike munching on a sandwich at the dining table. "Good morning, dear brother," I greeted sweetly. He eyed me suspiciously. "Good morning," he replied. I feigned kindness. "Let me help you with that ketchup." He looked suspicious again. "What do you want, Mia?" Mike asked. "Nothing. Just being a nice sister...hoping her nice brother will drop her at school?" "I knew it!" Mike exclaimed. "So will you? Please?!" I begged. "No reason," Mike shrugged and stood up to leave. Ugh, that's my brother Mike, the playboy of the family. Football and girls are his life. "But...it's not fair!!" I whined. "Mia, stop disturbing your brothers; I'll drop you off, and that's final," Mum said. "Yes, Mia, listen to Mum," Jeremy chimed in. "Shut up, Jeremy!!" I snapped. I faced my mum. "How am I the only one without a car? Appa said I could have one; I'm almost eighteen!" "Because you can't drive, duh," Mike teased. "That was ages ago; I'm better now," I protested. "Mia, I'll let you have a car after you prove you can drive well. Plus, your Appa wasn't there when you crashed into another car because you wouldn't stop checking your phone," Mum reminded me. "That was ages ago, I'm better now," I groaned. "Does anyone remember when Mia crashed into our garage door after begging Mum to let her park the car?" Mike teased. "Wasn't that like a week ago?" Jeremy added, and they burst out laughing. I was furious. Just then, the main door opened. "I'm home," a familiar voice said. As I turned, my heart skipped a beat. I couldn't control the smile spreading across my face. The feelings I'd tried to bury resurfaced.
