Chapter 17

865 Words
Michael’s grip on her wrists was firm, but not painful. He was close enough that she could feel the heat radiating off his body, close enough that his breath mingled with hers. His eyes, still glowing that unnerving red, bore into hers with an intensity that made her shiver. For a moment, neither of them moved. The room was silent, save for the sound of their breathing, heavy and charged with a tension that crackled like electricity between them. Selene could feel her heart hammering in her chest, could feel the conflict raging inside her—the Alpha in her, demanding control, and something else, something deeper, that yearned to give in. But then, the moment shattered. Selene’s instincts kicked in, and she began to struggle against his hold. “Let go of me!” she hissed, her voice sharp and commanding, though there was a tremor beneath the surface that betrayed her uncertainty. Michael didn’t move, his eyes still locked onto hers, but the primal growl in his throat softened, turning into something almost like a plea. “Mine,” he repeated, but this time, there was a note of desperation in his voice, as if he were clinging to a truth he didn’t fully understand. Selene’s mind raced, trying to process what was happening, trying to regain control. “Michael,” she said, her voice more measured now, though still tinged with an edge of steel. “Let. Go.” Something flickered in Michael’s eyes—confusion, hesitation, and then, as if a switch had been flipped, the red glow faded, his eyes returning to their normal brown. His grip on her wrists loosened, and for a moment, he seemed dazed, as if he wasn’t entirely sure how he had ended up in this position. The realization of what he had done hit him like a physical blow, and he released her, stumbling back from the bed with a look of horror on his face. “I… I’m sorry, Alpha,” he stammered, his voice shaking. “I don’t know what came over me. I didn’t mean to—” Selene sat up, her heart still racing, but her face was a mask of calm. “Enough,” she said, cutting him off, her voice firm. “You lost control. It won’t happen again.” Michael nodded quickly, his head bowed in shame. “Yes, Alpha. I… I’ll leave.” As he turned to go, Selene’s mind was a whirl of conflicting emotions—anger, confusion, something she didn’t want to name. She knew she should let him leave, knew that she needed time to process what had just happened, but something in her wouldn’t let it go. “Wait,” she called out, and Michael froze in his tracks, his back still to her. Selene took a deep breath, steadying herself before she spoke again. “You said… you said ‘mine.’ What did you mean by that?” Michael turned slowly to face her, his eyes wide with fear and confusion. “I don’t know,” he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. “It just… it just came out. It felt… it felt like it was true, but I don’t understand why.” Selene stared at him, her mind racing. The word had struck something deep within her, something she wasn’t ready to face. But she couldn’t deny the pull she felt toward him, the strange connection that had been growing between them since the moment he had arrived. For a long moment, they simply looked at each other, the silence between them thick with unspoken questions and unacknowledged truths. Finally, Selene spoke, her voice quiet but firm. “You’re dismissed, Michael. Go back to your quarters.” Michael hesitated, his eyes searching hers for some hint of what she was thinking, but there was nothing there—just the calm, controlled mask of the Alpha. With a reluctant nod, he turned and left the room, the door closing softly behind him. Selene sat on the edge of the bed, her thoughts a storm of emotions she couldn’t begin to unravel. The moment replayed in her mind, over and over, the feel of his hands on her skin, the look in his eyes, the word that had cut through the barriers she had so carefully constructed. Mine. It echoed in her mind, a haunting reminder of something she couldn’t quite grasp. She knew she should be angry, should be planning how to deal with the situation, but all she could think about was the heat of his touch, the strange thrill that had coursed through her when he had pinned her down. With a frustrated sigh, Selene ran a hand through her hair, trying to push the thoughts away. She was the Alpha—she had to stay in control. But as she lay back down, pulling the covers up to her chin, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something had changed, something she couldn’t ignore. And as she finally drifted off to sleep, her dreams were filled with the same glowing red eyes, the same word whispered over and over again, as if it were a promise. Mine.
