Chapter 18

927 Words
The morning light barely had time to fill the room before Selene was awake, her mind already racing with the responsibilities of the day. She dressed quickly, her movements brisk and efficient, pushing aside any lingering thoughts of the previous night. As she was fastening the last strap of her boots, there was a knock on her door. “Come in,” she called, her voice steady. The door opened, and Darius stepped inside, his expression serious. “Alpha, there’s something you need to see.” Selene immediately picked up on the urgency in his tone. “What is it?” “Last night, the patrols detected movement near the border. We caught someone trying to sneak in. He’s being held at the border”. Selene nodded, the importance of the situation clear. “Let’s go.” She followed Darius out of her quarters, her mind already shifting into the strategic mode that had served her well as Alpha. As they made their way through the settlement, Selene’s focus was solely on the situation at hand—until they turned a corner and she saw Michael. He was standing at the edge of the training grounds, his eyes catching hers for a brief moment before he quickly looked away. Selene felt a flicker of something deep within her, but she pushed it aside, reminding herself that she had more pressing matters to attend to. “Let’s keep moving,” she said to Darius, her voice firm, and they continued on their way. The journey to the border was swift, the tension between Selene and Darius palpable but unspoken. As they approached the area where the intruder was being held, Selene’s senses sharpened, her instincts on high alert. The border guards stood at attention as she and Darius arrived, and they quickly moved aside to reveal the prisoner. The man was a rogue, his clothes tattered and dirty, his face covered in scrapes and bruises. He was bound with thick ropes, his eyes filled with a mix of defiance and fear as he looked up at Selene. “Who are you, and what were you doing near our borders?” Selene demanded, her voice cold and authoritative. The rogue hesitated, his gaze flickering between Selene and Darius before he finally spoke. “I was just passing through,” he said, though his tone lacked conviction. “I didn’t mean to cause any trouble.” Selene’s eyes narrowed, sensing there was more to the story. “No one just passes through our territory without a reason. Tell me the truth, or you’ll regret it.” The rogue swallowed hard, clearly weighing his options. After a moment, he sighed, slumping slightly in defeat. “I was sent by Alpha Kane,” he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. Darius’s expression darkened at the mention of the name, but Selene remained calm, her gaze unwavering. “Why? What does Alpha Kane want with us?” The rogue hesitated again before finally answering. “He’s searching for something—someone, actually. The Divine Lycan.” A hush fell over the gathered wolves, the weight of the rogue’s words hanging heavily in the air. Selene’s heart pounded, but she kept her composure, not allowing any of her surprise to show. “And what makes him think the Divine Lycan is here?” Selene asked, her voice steady. “I don’t know,” the rogue replied quickly. “I was just following orders. But he’s convinced that the Divine Lycan is close, and he’s not going to stop until he finds him.” Selene studied the rogue for a long moment, weighing her options. She knew she couldn’t let him go, not with what he knew, but she also couldn’t afford to ignore the information he had provided. “Take him to the holding cells,” Selene ordered, her voice firm. “We’ll decide what to do with him later.” The guards moved to follow her orders, dragging the rogue away as he cast one last pleading look over his shoulder. Selene watched him go, her mind already racing with the implications of what she had just learned. Darius stepped closer, his voice low. “What do you want to do next, Alpha?” Selene took a deep breath, her decision already made. “We need to strengthen our defenses. If Alpha Kane is really searching for the Divine Lycan, it’s only a matter of time before he makes a move against us. We can’t be caught off guard.” Darius nodded, his respect for Selene’s leadership clear in his eyes. “I’ll make the arrangements.” As they turned to head back to the settlement, Selene’s thoughts drifted once more to Michael. The connection she had felt with him, the strange pull that had only grown stronger, was now tinged with a sense of urgency. If Alpha Kane was truly after the Divine Lycan, and if that legend was somehow connected to the rogue she had brought into her pack, then things were about to get even more complicated. But for now, Selene pushed those thoughts aside, focusing on the immediate threat at hand. She had a pack to protect, and she wasn’t going to let anything—or anyone—distract her from that duty. The sun was climbing higher in the sky as Selene and Darius returned to the heart of their territory, and with it came the promise of a new day filled with challenges, decisions, and the ever-present threat of what lay just beyond their borders.
