Chapter 3

1162 Words
The sky darkened into a deep indigo, stars beginning to twinkle faintly overhead. Selene stood at the entrance of the stone building, her eyes fixed on the heavy wooden doors that kept the rogue locked away. Her mind was a storm of thoughts, swirling with memories and unanswered questions. The resemblance of the rogue to her former mate was unnerving, stirring up emotions she had buried long ago. She had spent the entire day going over every possible explanation, but none seemed to satisfy her. Why did this rogue look so much like him? Was it a cruel twist of fate, or was there something more sinister at play? She pushed open the doors, stepping into the dimly lit interior. The building had once been a gathering hall, but now it served as a holding cell for prisoners too dangerous to keep among the general population. The air was cool and damp, the stone walls echoing with each of her footsteps. At the far end of the room, the rogue sat chained to the wall, his head bowed, his dark hair falling over his face. The iron cuffs around his wrists and ankles glinted in the faint light, and the chains rattled softly as he shifted slightly at the sound of her approach. Selene stopped a few paces away from him, crossing her arms over her chest. She studied him in silence, her sharp eyes taking in every detail—the tension in his muscles, the way his hands clenched and unclenched, the slight twitch in his jaw. He was on edge, and she could sense the undercurrent of defiance still running through him, despite his apparent weariness. “Who are you?” she asked, her voice breaking the silence. The rogue slowly lifted his head, meeting her gaze with eyes that were eerily similar to those of the mate who had betrayed her. The familiarity of his features sent a jolt of anger and pain through her, but she forced herself to remain composed. “I’m no one,” he replied, his voice rough, as if unused to speaking. Selene’s eyes narrowed. “That’s not an answer.” The rogue remained silent, his expression unreadable. His defiance was clear, but there was something else in his eyes—a flicker of something that Selene couldn’t quite place. “Why do you look like him?” she demanded, her voice hardening. He tilted his head slightly, a ghost of a smirk playing at the corners of his lips. “Like who?” “You know who,” she snapped, her patience wearing thin. “Don’t play games with me.” The rogue’s smirk faded, and for a moment, his eyes softened, as if he understood the turmoil she was feeling. But the softness was gone as quickly as it had appeared, replaced by a cold, guarded expression. “Maybe it’s just a coincidence,” he said quietly, though there was no conviction in his voice. “Or maybe it’s something else,” Selene retorted, taking a step closer. “Something you’re not telling me.” The rogue’s eyes flickered with something that looked like fear, but he quickly masked it with indifference. “I’ve told you all I know.” Selene’s hands clenched at her sides. She was used to getting answers, used to commanding respect and obedience. This rogue’s resistance was infuriating, and it only fueled her determination to break through his defenses. She leaned in, her voice dropping to a low, threatening whisper. “I can make this very unpleasant for you if you continue to withhold information.” The rogue’s gaze met hers steadily, though she could see the tension in his jaw. “Do what you must, Alpha.” His words were a challenge, one that sparked a fire of anger within her. She had given him a chance to cooperate, to make this easier for him, but he had refused. If he wanted to play this game, then she would play it her way. Without another word, she reached out and grabbed the chain attached to his wrists, pulling it taut. The rogue hissed in pain as the iron bit into his skin, but he didn’t cry out. Selene’s eyes bore into his, her anger seething just below the surface. “You will tell me who you are,” she said, her voice low and deadly. “And why do you look like the mate who betrayed me?” The rogue’s breathing was ragged, his face pale, but he met her gaze with a stubborn resolve that both frustrated and intrigued her. “I can’t tell you what I don’t know.” Selene’s grip on the chain tightened, her frustration mounting. She was torn between the urge to punish him for his defiance and the need to understand the mystery he represented. His resemblance to her ex-mate was too striking to be mere coincidence, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that he held the key to something much larger. But no matter how much she pressed him, the rogue remained steadfast in his silence, his eyes betraying nothing. The tension between them crackled like a live wire, the air thick with unspoken emotions and unanswered questions. Finally, Selene released the chain, letting it drop with a heavy clank. She stepped back, her heart pounding in her chest, a mix of anger and frustration coursing through her veins. “This isn’t over,” she said, her voice cold. “I will get the answers I need, one way or another.” The rogue didn’t respond, his gaze dropping to the floor as if in defeat. But Selene knew better. This was no surrender; it was merely a pause, a temporary lull in the battle of wills between them. With a final, lingering glance at the rogue, Selene turned and walked away, the sound of her footsteps echoing through the empty hall. As she exited the building, the cool night air washed over her, doing little to soothe the turmoil within her. She had always prided herself on her strength, her ability to remain in control no matter the situation. But this rogue—this wolf who looked so much like the one who had broken her—was testing her in ways she hadn’t anticipated. As she made her way back to her quarters, her mind churned with thoughts of what to do next. She knew she couldn’t let this go, couldn’t let him remain a mystery. She needed answers, and she would do whatever it took to get them. The night was long and restless for Selene, her thoughts consumed by the rogue and the questions that refused to leave her mind. And as dawn approached, she resolved to uncover the truth, no matter the cost. Because this was more than just about her past—this was about the future of her pack, and she couldn’t afford to be blindsided by whatever secrets the rogue held.
