Chapter 2

The rogue stumbled slightly as they approached the heavily guarded cell near the edge of the pack’s main settlement. It was a place reserved for the most dangerous of enemies, and it was where she would keep the rogue until she decided what to do with him. As the cell door clanged shut, Selene stood outside, staring at the wolf through the bars. He stared back, his eyes glowing in the dim light, filled with a mix of defiance and something else—something that made her heart ache in a way she hadn’t felt in a long time. “I’ll find out who you are,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. “And why you’ve come here.” The rogue didn’t respond, but Selene didn’t need words to know that this was only the beginning of something far more complicated than she had anticipated. As she turned to leave, the rogue’s eyes followed her, and for a brief moment, she felt as if she was being pulled back into a past she had tried so hard to forget. But she shook off the feeling, reminding herself of who she was—Alpha Selene, leader of the Silver Blood Moon pack. And she would not be swayed by ghosts of the past. With a final glance at the rogue, she walked away, her heart heavy with questions and a growing sense of dread about what she had just brought into her pack. As she turned to her warriors, her beta, Darius, stepped forward. Darius was a tall, broad-shouldered wolf with piercing blue eyes and a calm, steady demeanor. He had been by Selene’s side since she first took up the mantle of alpha, and his loyalty was beyond question. But tonight, there was a flicker of concern in his eyes that Selene couldn’t ignore. “Alpha,” he began, his voice low but firm, “the pack is uneasy. They’re talking about the rogue. They’re wondering why you brought him back.” Selene’s expression hardened. “It’s not their place to question my decisions.” “I know,” Darius said, his tone measured, “but you have to understand their concern. He looks… just like him.” At the mention of her ex-mate, Selene’s eyes flashed with a mix of anger and pain. “He is not the same wolf. But I need to know why he resembles him so closely. There’s something going on here, and I intend to find out what it is.” Darius nodded, though his concern didn’t fade. “I trust your judgment, Alpha. But the pack is on edge. They’ll need reassurance.” Selene took a deep breath, forcing herself to remain calm. She knew Darius was right. The pack looked to her for strength, for guidance, and she couldn’t afford to let her personal feelings interfere with her duty. “I’ll address them,” she said finally. “But first, I need to secure the rogue.” Darius stepped back, giving her a nod of respect. “Of course, Alpha. We’ll make sure he’s guarded.” Selene watched as the rogue was led into the stone building, his chains clinking softly with each step. He didn’t resist, but there was a tense set to his shoulders, as if he was bracing himself for what was to come. Selene couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to this wolf than met the eye, and the thought only deepened her resolve to uncover the truth. As the heavy wooden doors closed behind the rogue, Selene turned to face the gathering pack. The early morning light bathed the clearing in a soft, golden glow, but there was a palpable tension in the air. The wolves stood in small groups, their eyes fixed on her with a mix of curiosity, concern, and unease. Selene took a step forward, her presence commanding their attention. She could feel the weight of their expectations, the pressure to be the leader they needed her to be. But she had never shied away from a challenge, and she wasn’t about to start now. “My pack,” she began, her voice carrying across the clearing, “I know you have questions about the rogue I’ve brought back. And I understand your concerns. But I ask that you trust me as you always have.” She paused, letting her words sink in. The wolves watched her intently, waiting for her to continue. “This rogue is not who you think he is,” she continued, her tone firm. “But his resemblance to someone from our past cannot be ignored. I intend to find out why he looks the way he does and what his presence means for our pack.” A murmur of agreement rippled through the crowd, though the unease was still palpable. “I will do everything in my power to ensure the safety and stability of this pack,” Selene said, her gaze sweeping over her wolves. “But I need your support and your trust. We are stronger together, and we will face whatever challenges come our way as one.” There was a moment of silence, and then one by one, the wolves began to bow their heads in a gesture of respect and loyalty. Selene felt a surge of pride and determination. She would not let them down. “Darius,” she called, turning to her beta. He stepped forward immediately. “Yes, Alpha?” “I want guards posted at the stone building at all times. No one goes in or out without my permission.” “Understood,” Darius replied, his expression serious. Selene gave a curt nod and then turned back to her pack. “You are dismissed. Prepare for your duties. We have much work to do.” The wolves began to disperse, the tension in the air slowly easing as they returned to their routines. Selene watched them go, her mind already turning to the next steps she needed to take. The rogue’s presence had stirred up more than just memories—it had brought questions that needed answers, and she wouldn’t rest until she had them. As the last of the pack members left the clearing, Selene found herself alone, save for Darius, who remained by her side. “Are you sure about this, Selene?” he asked quietly, using her name rather than her title—a sign of their long-standing friendship. She looked at him, her expression softening for a brief moment. “I have to be. This is bigger than just me or my past. There’s something at play here, and I need to figure out what it is before it’s too late.” Darius nodded. “Then we’ll stand by you, no matter what.” Selene smiled, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Thank you, Darius.” With that, she turned and walked away, her mind already racing with plans and strategies. She had a rogue to interrogate, a pack to protect, and a mystery to unravel. And she wouldn’t stop until she had the answers she sought.
