********** The next day after work on my way home I received a call from Ethan. “Hello?” “Hi Lena.” He greeted. “Hi Ethan.” I greeted back. “Hope you are well?” He asked. “I just wanted to find out if you have given my offer a thought.” My hand goes to my chest and I suddenly feel out of breath. “Right. I will get back to you on that soon.” I hurriedly responded. “Okay.” He said and we ended the call. Just as I got home my phone buzzed again and I saw the caller ID to be that of my sister, Alexa. “Dad is sick again.” She said immediately I answered the phone. “Oh my god,” I gasp, terrified. “Is he okay? Is he stable?” “Yes, but Mom was really scared.” “Tell Mom not to worry—I’m going to send money soon. Tell the doctors to do whatever it takes to save Dad.” “Are you coming home?” “I can’t,” I say, trying my best not to cry. “I have work to get done, but tell Mom not to worry about money. I’m going to help. Take care of her and yourself and please dad too.” After the phone call, I can’t sit still—this whole situation is making me crazy. ********** ETHAN’s POV I stared at my phone, feeling a mix of frustration and worry. It had been a week since i last heard from Lena, and my thoughts were consumed by the silence. Unable to stand it any longer, i dialed her number, his heart pounding as the phone rang hoping she would pick up. "Hello?" Lena's voice finally answered, sounding a bit tired. "Lena, hi," i said, trying to keep his voice calm. "It's Ethan. I haven't heard from you in a while. How are you?" "I'm okay, Ethan," she replied. "Just been really busy with work and everything." "I understand," i said, though I could not shake the feeling that there was more to her silence. "I wanted to follow up on our last conversation. Have you had any more thoughts about my offer?" There was a pause on the other end of the line, and i could hear her take a deep breath. "I have been thinking about it, Ethan. I will get back to you on that soon.” "Okay.," i said softly. As i ended the call, i felt a little sense of purpose. The past week of silence had been difficult, but hearing Lena's voice and knowing she would soon get back to me gave me up and I prayed silently it come with a positive result. ********** The next day, I decided to go see Ethan at his house to talk more about what I was getting myself into. I texted him for his house address which he sent to me almost immediately I take an Uber to the address which was about thirty five minutes away from my work place. The Uber driver stops outside some really fancy looking house. Not just a house. It was a mansion; it’s a big , black building with beautiful blown trees. I pay the Uber driver and get out of the car, buzzing at the gate and taking a deep breath as I step on the compound. I headed for the door. I knocked on the door and an handsome man came tk open the door for me. The man is tall and broad-shouldered, wearing a black suit that perfectly complements the lean lines of his body. His hair, short and brown, is combed back from his face to showcase his big brown eyes glowering down at me. His expression softens a little when he sees how nervous I’m. “You must be—” “Lena,” I interrupt. “Lena Thompson.” He opens the door wider. “Come in.” I walk in slowly, trying not to gawk as I take in his expansive house. “I am Alex,” he says, offering me his hand. When I take it, his grip is strong, firm but not rough. “It’s a pleasure to meet you. I am Ethan’s best friend, and he will be out to see you soon. Ethan came out looking for sharper than Alex. Unlike Alex he had big blue eyes and darker colored hair. He is looking at me like he’s trying to read my mind. “Shall we start?” “Is Alex going to be here too?” I ask nervously. “Of course, but if you do not feel comfortable he can leave.” “It is fine.” I assured him. “Do you plan on getting married?” The question came popping out of my mouth. “I do not need a wife to have a baby. That why you are here,” he says, taking a sip his glass. “You want me to have a baby for you?” He chuckles. “Isn’t that the whole point of being a surrogate?” “So who’s eggs are you planning on using then?” I asked almost immediately. Ethan suddenly frowns. “I’m surprised you had not realized it before now, Miss Thompson .” My hands are suddenly sweaty and my heart beats faster as Ethan and Alex stares at me with those eyes. “I’m sorry,” I say after a moment. “You must think I’m an idiot.” “Something like that,” he says but he’s still wearing a small smile. “I just—I was okay with this because the baby was not going to be biologically mine. I was just going to carry it. But if you use one of my eggs, that means the baby will be part of me. It is going to have my blood. I know it may sound stupid, but that matters to me.” “So what do you mean?” Ethan interrupted my voice. “I don’t want to do this,” I whisper. “I know that’s probably not what you want to hear, but it’s the truth.” “You do not what to do this to be able to help your family and pay your medical school bills?”,” he asks with a nod.
