******** LENA’S POV Sitting on the couch after work ,I called Lucy. My best friend. She was the one I could confide in before telling my parents about it. I placed the call to Lucy and decided to invite her over for dinner to discuss the situation. Lucy arrived at my apartment in the evening, and she was all smiles. A smile which usually brightens up a room. We settle in the kitchen to prepare dinner together. “So, what’s the big news?” Lucy asked, sensing my serious demeanor. Lena took a deep breath. “Lucy, I’ve been offered a very unique opportunity. I’ve been asked to be a surrogate.” Lucy’s eyes widened in surprise. “A surrogate? For whom?” Lena explained her encounter with Ethan Carter, the proposal, and the thinking she had done over the past few days. “Wow, Lena. The “Ethan Carter?”Lucy asked looking stunned. “Yes Lucy. The one and only”.Lena replied. “That’s a lot to take in,” Lucy said, leaning back. “Do you think you can do it?” “It’s overwhelming,” Lena admitted. “But it’s also an incredible opportunity. The financial support could help me achieve my dream of going to medical school and becoming a neurosurgeon.” “But would it not be stressful?” Lena asked further. I nod slowly. “I don’t know what to do. I mean, this is crazy, right? I’ve never had a baby. I’ve never even had s*x! That which you know. So this would all be new.” “Okay,” she says, placing her hands on the kitchen table. “This is obviously a really serious decision to make.” As I ate my dinner, my thought wondered. “This could be a good thing, right? My parents…they need the money. Like, really need it. I need to pay for my sister’s school fees and also for mine.” “Lena, this is big and you have to be super sure that you are ready to do this.” “I did not want to do this Lena but the payment caught my eye. The settlement is huge. A $100,000 cash, easy money. He has also promised to take care of my family and pay my tuition fee aside the settlement fee. . This kind of money is life changing. That kind of money can mean the difference between life and death for my family. We would never have to worrry about money again.” I said to Lucy. “You’re going to be pregnant—do you know how hard that is going to be?” Lucy interrupts “Not as hard as losing my slot to medical school, not as hard as not being able to take care of my family members,” I whisper. She looks at me, her gaze softening. “I’m sorry.” “It’s not your fault. I know…” I sigh. “I know this is not going to be easy, but I have to do something to help my family. I can not be this useless. I am 23 for crying out loud.” “This is what we’re going to do,” Lucy says after a moment. “You’re going to talk to a counselor or lawyers before you make a decision.” “I’ve talked to a counselor about it,” i said. “I know it will be challenging, but I think I can handle it with the right support.” Lucy nodded thoughtfully. “It sounds like you’ve done your homework. But how do you feel about the emotional and physical aspects?” “I think I am okay.” I responded Lucy reached out and took my hand. “You’re one of the strongest people I know, Lena. If anyone can do this, it’s you. But make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons and that you’re fully prepared for what comes next.” I squeezed Lucy’s hand gratefully. “Thank you, Lucy. Your support means everything to me.” “You’ve got it, girl,” Lucy said with a smile. “Just promise me you’ll take care of yourself and keep me in the loop.” “I promise,” Lena said, feeling a renewed sense of confidence. “I’m going to move forward with this. I’ll meet with Ethan to finalize the contract.” “Good luck, Lena. You’ve got this,” Lucy said, giving her a tight hug. “So tell me how you guys after the gala. What was his reaction like.? Because I still remember the look on his face when you soiled his suit.” Lucy asked further. Lena ended up telling Lucy about Ethan and every thing that happened from the night of the gala to the dinner date. ********** I spend a lot of the afternoon thinking about my life, but not because it bothers me but because I wanted it to work out so I could take care of my family. How would I tell my parents I wanted to get pregnant outside of wedlock? I am still a virgin. I planned to wait. Sef has never been something I considered with just anyone. I have never even dated anybody to want s*x. I was waiting for the right person but now I will soon become a pregnant virgin. The surrogacy was on my mind because of a lot of things. The application program to the school was closing up, I needed to get more medication for my dad, my sister needed some new clothes and my mum needed extra for upkeeps. Been a virgin surrogate was the least on my mind right now. For the next week I busied myself with work. I have never been the type of girl that goes out to party and do crazy things so I rather read for hours during my free time.
