Chapter 1: A New World
Nolan’s POV
“And here is your room. I worked so hard on perfecting the pastels. Do you like it?”, my mom asked, a mix of excitement and nervousness present in her tone.
I looked round the room, taking in the pastel colored walls. The chemical smell was evident making it known to me that they were just freshly painted.
I wasn’t really a pastel person.
At least not anymore. The last time I breathed near pastel tones was in middle school, when I tried so hard to be a ‘normal girl’ as my mom used to push for.
She’d buy me bows and glitter and colored socks, which I never had an issue with. I’ve just grown up now.
I preferred neutral tones. Not because of anything in particular- I just realized I looked better in them. My already full, curly platinum blonde hair was enough to draw attention. I didn’t need more colors on me.
I pressed my lips in a thin line, slightly smudging my gloss.
“Um, it’s nice”, I say, looking round, taking it all in before locking eyes with her.
A flicker of disappointment flashed across her face.
“I like it”, I breathed out. “Mom”, I finished.
She relaxed a little, letting out a sigh. “I’m glad you like it Lanny”, she beamed, her chestnut brown hair, cascading down her shoulders.
“Don’t call me that”, I mumbled, cringing internally by the aged nickname.
I hated that name.
“Alright honey, I’ll let you settle in and unpack. Be down for dinner by 7, okay?”, she smiled coming over to where I stood and pecking my cheek before exiting the room.
Before I could tell her that I already had some snacks on the plane, she was already out of the room.
Just great.
The room wasn’t too bad. It was much larger than my room back at my dad’s place. A lot more decent looking too. I walked over to the already made bed, placing my bag on it and pulling my phone out from the back pocket of my jeans.
Dad
‘Hey sweetness, settling down ok? Be good for pops’
Delivered 2:35pm
Melanie
‘Ugh I miss you already Nols :((( Who’s gonna have dumplings with me nowww ?? Come visit when you can xx’
Delivered 3:00pm
Kevin
‘Text me when you land babe, we can have icecream 2gether ;) I know a spot’
Delivered 12:03pm
I clicked my phone shut, tossing it on the bed, deciding to unpack first.
I wasn’t too fond of change. When my dad told me I had to come stay with my mom, I could not take it well. My home was Ridgewood falls. It was a small town, everyone knew everyone. I had grown up there and I loved it there. As much as I hated my school there, I loved the familiarity of it all.
One random Tuesday afternoon, I got hit with the news that I had to move.
No options given to me.
No freedom to choose.
Just me and a decision already made.
I didn’t hate my dad for it. I understood. Finances were tough but I would’ve preferred dropping out and getting a job rather than being flown to a different country entirely to live with some lady that has barely been in my life.
I didn’t hate her. I just didn’t feel at home.
My mom and dad have been separated for a while now.
Years actually. I was ten when they split. My dad raised me till I turned 18 and then things got bad leading to this.
The only good thing about London was my boyfriend, Kevin. We met at summer camp two years prior and right after we started dating he had to move to London. When I broke the news of my move, he was ecstatic.
He couldn’t wait to show me around the town.
After I finished unpacking the last of my stuff, hours had gone by. It was almost 7 now. I responded to my texts. Melanie said she’d FaceTime later.
I took a shower. The weather was definitely different here. It was much colder so a hot shower was needed.
After my shower, I tied my hair up in a messy bun, slipped on some gray sweats and a large, brown tee before heading down for dinner.
The smell of spaghetti sauce immediately caught my attention. I loved spaghetti.
Getting downstairs, the table was already set. Two plates of spaghetti and meatballs. The dining room led into the open kitchen area, there my mom stood, backing me.
I cleared my throat in an attempt to get her attention.
She turned. “Oh, Lanny. Thank goodness you’re down. I just finished with dinner”, her accent thick as she giggled.
I thought British people were supposed to be in a bad mood all the time. She seemed pretty happy all the time. Life can’t be that good for anybody.
“Spaghetti night”, I say awkwardly.
“Mhm”, she hummed. “Just go ahead and sit down. I’ll join you in a moment”, she said. I hummed in recognition and took a seat, waiting for her to join me at the table.
My stomach rumbled.
