~Sona’s POV~
I had been living among humans all this time, and I had deeply fallen in love with one of them,Patel.
Everything I had been taught about humans in the serpent kingdom suddenly felt uncertain. Patel, and the other humans I came into contact with, were nothing like what I had been warned about.
In my kingdom, everyone believed humans were not to be trusted. My father, the serpent king, warned me most of all.
He never allowed me to forget that my mother had died at the hands of a human. That alone was meant to shape my entire view of them.
But it didn’t.
Not anymore.
My perception had changed.
I had waited for six months. The time was now over.
In our kingdom, if a serpent turned into a human and remained that way for six months, it meant they could never return to their true form again. That realization crushed me. It meant I was not going back home.
Worse still, I feared the worst—that the dragons might have already attacked our kingdom and wiped the serpent race from existence. That could be the only reason I had received no word, no help, nothing from home.
The next day, after the six months had passed, I was finally going to meet Patel’s parents.
It had been planned earlier, but something had happened that delayed it.I don’t want to talk about that now. What mattered was that the day had finally come.
I was about to meet the parents of the man I loved.
And yet, Patel still didn’t know who I truly was.
I had promised myself I would not tell him. I believed I would never return to my true form again, so there was no need to burden him with the truth.
“Are you ready, my queen?” I heard him ask from behind the door.
I had grown used to him calling me that. It reminded me of who I was supposed to be,the future queen of the serpents—even though that future no longer felt real.
“I’ll be ready in ten,” I replied with a smile, though he couldn’t see it.
Each day, I was falling more in love with him. And I believed he loved me just as deeply.
I took one last look at myself in the mirror, picked up my purse, and prepared to leave for dinner with his parents.
But just as I was about to step out, I noticed a faint, familiar light flickering in the corner of the bedroom.
I froze.
I knew exactly what it meant.
Before I could fully process it, he appeared.
A green serpent.
I had been waiting for signs from my kind for six months. Nothing had come l until now.
“Am I at your service, my queen,” he said, bowing respectfully.
“What are you doing here?” I asked immediately.
My voice shook. I had almost given up hope of ever hearing from them again.
“We are here to take you back home,” the green serpent replied.
“Back home?” I repeated, stunned.
“We have been searching for you for a very long time. We even sought help from the dragon kingdom.”
My heart tightened.
“Until Lord Shanghan showed us the way last night. Your father gave me his powers so I could find you. You must come with me… so he can see you before he dies.”
My breath caught.
“What do you mean?” I whispered.
“You have to come with me,” he repeated firmly.
I stood there, completely torn. In two hours, I was supposed to meet Patel’s parents. Yet now, I was being told my father was dying and that I might never see him again if I didn’t leave immediately.
“I know what you’re thinking,” the green serpent said gently. “I will help you.”
Before I could respond, he shifted.
He transformed into me.
Exactly me.
Not a single difference could be seen. It was a power only our kind possessed.
“Stay here,” he said. “I will handle your lover.”
And just like that, he walked out into the living room, wearing my face.
I knew then what he would do,he knew how to manipulate humans well enough to keep everything in place until I returned.
Later, I convinced Patel that I had found my family and needed to go see my ill father.
“I’ll return in two weeks,” I told him softly, giving him a final kiss.
And with that, I made my decision.
I would go back.
I would see my father.
And I would also find a way to make him understand my love for Patel.
I only hoped he would approve.
