Truth about the mission

1168 Words
Third person narrator “Madam Sona…” She hears a voice call her, but it is faint, distant, almost like it is coming from another world. For a brief moment, she does not react. Then it hits her. Damn it. It is the boss’s secretary. That realization comes with a second one. She had been dozing off in the office, and at such an hour too. That is not something she would normally allow herself to do. “Ehmm…” she groans softly as she slowly sits up, her eyes meeting those of the timid secretary standing at the door. “Yes?” she asks, trying her best to hide the awkwardness in her voice and posture. “The boss needs to see you. He said it is urgent,” the timid girl says quickly before stepping out, as if she does not want to stay any longer than necessary. Sona remains seated for a moment, slightly confused, trying to gather herself. “Let him know I will be there in a few minutes,” she finally says, rising from her chair. Instead of heading straight to his office, she walks toward the washroom first. She needs a moment. Standing in front of the mirror, she splashes cold water on her face and lifts her head to look at her reflection. That is when everything comes back. Every single memory. Every reason. Every purpose. Her expression slowly hardens as realization settles in once more. She remembers why she is here in this human world. She remembers her mission clearly now. Revenge. Against any human or serpent who had anything to do with what happened to her and her parents. For the longest time, she believed her father had banished her. She carried that pain, that betrayal, deep within her. But now she knows the truth. Her father did not do that to her. It was the red serpent. A serpent from a kingdom she has never been able to trace or identify. “What the hell…?” she mutters under her breath, her eyes fixed on the mirror. Then she notices it. Her eyes. They are no longer brown. They are blue. A deep, unnatural blue that immediately unsettles her. “How am I supposed to pass through this?” she whispers, staring at herself in disbelief. She knows exactly what this means. After today, she will have no choice but to start wearing lenses. If she does not, her cover will be blown, and everything she has worked toward will collapse. Taking a deep breath, she gathers herself and leaves the washroom. “Yes, boss,” she says as she steps into his office. “What the hell? Where have you been since I sent for you?” he snaps immediately, his voice sharp and filled with anger. “I was…” she begins, but the words fail her. She does not even know what excuse to give. “Save it,” he interrupts coldly. “If you were not one of my best workers, you would already be fired.” Mr. Rollins stands up from his chair, his frustration clearly visible. The tension in the room rises instantly. “I am sorry, sir,” Sona says carefully, trying to steady the situation. “I will fix whatever is wrong.” “Oh, really?” he scoffs. “Seems like everything is easy for you.” His anger only intensifies. “Our stock performance is dropping. We are now in fifth position, yet this company has been number one for years,” he says, throwing a set of chart papers onto the desk in front of her. “Take a look at it. You are not doing your job properly as the head of marketing.” Sona picks up the papers and studies them carefully. The numbers do not lie. The sales have dropped significantly, and it is alarming. It does not make sense. Just last week, everything was stable. “I will implement new strategies immediately,” she says, keeping her tone controlled. “I am confident we can recover.” “How exactly do you plan to do that?” he asks, his voice still filled with doubt and anger. He looks like a man under immense pressure. This business is not just a company to him. It is a legacy passed down through generations, and the thought of it failing clearly terrifies him. “I will handle it,” Sona replies firmly. At this point, that is all she can promise. “Get out,” he says sharply. “And do your job.” Sona turns and walks out, rolling her eyes slightly once she is out of his sight. “Great way to start the week,” she murmurs to herself as she walks down the hallway. In the eleven months she has worked at Rollins Dressing Line, she has never seen her boss smile. Not even once. It is almost unbelievable, considering the kind of reputation he has outside the workplace. Dev Rollins has been named twice as the most handsome and attractive young man in the country. He has everything anyone could want. His height, his well-built body, his curly hair, and those lips that could easily make any woman lose her mind. “Are you deaf today?” Sona hears a familiar voice from behind her. She does not need to turn around to know who it is. “What do you mean, Priya?” she asks, turning to face her friend. “I have been calling you since you walked out of that office,” Priya says, then suddenly smiles mischievously as she steps closer. “Do not tell me you finally got a taste of him,” she whispers with a teasing smirk. Sona’s face instantly flushes. “Oh my God, Priya, what are you saying? What if someone hears you?” she says quickly, glancing around nervously. “I am sure no one will,” Priya replies casually. “But you should admit it. Just like everyone else, you want him.” “Priya, stop it,” Sona says, clearly uncomfortable. “The boss is already angry with me. Do not make things worse.” “My brother is all bark and no bite,” Priya says with a shrug. “And I think he has a soft spot for you.” Sona sighs, clearly done with the conversation. “You know what, Priya? I am done with this. If I do not fix the marketing strategy, I might actually lose my job,” she says, removing her glasses absentmindedly. Priya suddenly freezes. “Oh my God, Sona… what happened to your eyes?” Sona stiffens immediately. Her heart skips. “What?” she asks, panic rising as she quickly grips her glasses. “Your eyes… they are blue. How did that happen?” Priya asks, staring at her in shock. Sona’s mind begins to race. One of her secrets is now dangerously close to being exposed.
