CHAPTER 7 The IT data processing department at GI was staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It was, though, a sedate place to work. Little hurry and no stress. The division ran in the same way as a well-oiled, well-maintained machine did and everybody worked by the book. When something happened to disturb the celestial bliss, the reaction was like an old and dignified elephant stirring. First, the limbs seemed to move in an uncoordinated fashion until the animal was able to rise. Once up and in motion, though, it was difficult to stop, and then needed space – lots of space. And so it was when an operator first noticed data being destroyed. His report threw everyone into a panic. The managers and the managed scurried about like hermit crabs looking for their shells.
