Chapter 15

2000 Words
“This is bullshit Andre and you know it!” I screamed as I tried to get past Andre and out of the study.  “Please Trish. Owen gave orders. I can’t let you out there.” His voice was pleading. Andre didn’t like this any more than I did, but I still outrank him. Plus, that was my friend out there being gripped up by my psychotic brother.  Syrus had started throwing his weight around more and getting aggressive when he didn’t need to. He didn’t want to be Alpha, but he sure seemed to like the perks. It was getting exhausting.  I can see the way his actions are starting to wear on Dad. He should be good and ready to hand over the title to Syrus. Instead, Syrus is living every day as if he were human. No responsibilities. Not a care for anyone in this pack. Syrus cared for Syrus. Unlike Kitty. From the moment I met Kitty, there was something about her. I was drawn to her. I even let her share the same bed for a sleepover. Hell, I never had a sleepover before Kitty. I just don’t feel that type of friendship connection with anyone other than my sister, and even then, there were things I told Kitty that I could never say to Ella.  I continued to pace the room. Orla sat on the sofa, staring into the empty cold hearth. She hadn’t said a word since we left the dining room. Her face held a look of angst, likely worried for her mate.  Ella sat beside Orla with an arm draped over Orla’s shoulders. Her worried eyes switched between watching me pace, Andre guard the door, and Orla stare into the fireplace.  I had enough. “So what? We do nothing? She is just a human girl, and who knows what stupid s**t Syrus has pulled with her out there! She is our friend Andre!” Andre winced at my tone. “I hear you Trish. I really do. You know if I let you out of here, Owen will have my head.” “It will be more than your head he will have.” We all whipped around to Orla. She had a smirk starting to form and a glint in her eyes. If Orla was anything, it wasn’t playful. She never volleyed with Andre playfully. She must have lost her mind like Syrus. Our expressions clearly said as much.  “What?” She asked innocently. “I’m only saying the truth. Owen takes his Beta position very seriously. It would definitely be more than Andre’s head. Though, he might sew his mouth shut instead, to torture him. No more KItty cooking for you.” Andre’s mouth fell open and Ella burst into laughter. I was still standing there, completely shocked at it all.  “I’ve been thinking. Just hear me out.” Orla said, shifting herself on the couch to face us. “Owen told me how dismissive Syrus was of the entire Alpha Summit. He thought it was stupid. He spent most of his time trying to sample the local fare, both food and flesh, if you catch my drift.” She looked at us pointedly. We most certainly caught her drift.  “It's an act,” she said flatly, when we clearly did not understand where she was going with this. “He wants the Alpha to think he is unstable. The more he lashes out, the less the Alpha will want to step down. What is more outrageous than almost releasing his wolf on a human girl? Now, don’t get me wrong. I think that was even a bit much for Syrus. But doesn’t it make sense?” Orla finished. Now, I was the one fighting to keep my wolf contained. I never thought my brother was capable of being such an ass, but the more Orla laid it out, the more logical it sounded. My wolf wanted to scratch out Syrus eyes and chuck them into the woods. Before I could finish my thought, I heard the front door slam. It must have been Kitty running away.  I looked to Andre. I could feel my irises expanding and a solid black take over my eyes. I was done with this room. I was done being locked up. I was done with Syrus. “Andre. You WILL move from this door. Now!” I pulled from the depths of my wolf and out popped the Alpha female. Orla instantly dropped her head and exposed her neck in submission at my tone. Andre ripped open the door at my command while doing the same. To my surprise, even my sister was bending, head down and neck to me.  Never have I ever used an Alpha command. Honestly, I didn’t know I could. Mom and Dad always said that I was still an Alpha, despite being female. They said I had my own power, it would just be different than Syrus’. I guess they were right.  I stormed out of the study and right toward the dining room. I was ready to take down Syrus, no matter the cost. I was so tired of him trying to skirt his responsibilities. He didn’t want to be Alpha? Fine. But it surely would not be at the expense of my best friend.  I was panting heavy, seconds from shifting into my wolf and ripping Syrus to shreds. I have never felt this angry in my whole life. As I walked in, a quick glance revealed no Syrus.  Mom, Dad, Eli, and Owen were still in the same spots as when Andre ushered us out. Their faces were a mix of fear, curiosity, and just plain confusion.  “Where the hell is Syrus?” I bellowed for all I was worth. I had clearly not put the Alpha Female back in her box as Owen and Eli dipped their heads and exposed their necks. Even my mother let out a small whimper before her and my father’s eyes shot towards mine. I was raging.  “Oh good! You’re back. I have pie.” said Kitty, as she bounced into the room completely unphased. The potholders on her hands were so big on her, they went all the way to her elbows. She carried a huge rectangular baking dish with flowers on the outside. I immediately felt my Alpha-self poof away.  “Andre! There you are. Could you help me bring in the ice cream and coffee?” Kitty asked sweetly as she gathered more dinner dishes and headed back to the kitchen. I turned to see Andre, Orla, and Ella walk into the dining room. Orla looked to her mate who still had his head bowed. Ella looked to Eli who was in the same position. In a matter of second both girls were bent over in side-clutching laughter.  Before long, Mom and Dad both joined in. Tears were pouring from my father’s eyes like I had never seen. Eli and Owen lifted their gaze. Both of their faces held expressions I couldn’t read, but annoyance was certainly one of the ones written on Eli’s.  Kitty came in again and looked at the lot of us. This time she pouted. “Well shoot. I always miss the good jokes.” At her innocence, the laughter increased. Even I couldn’t help myself from joining in.  When the laughter finally died down, Kitty started.”Trish, did you say you were looking for your brother? He left out the front right as I went to get the pie. I was sure he would have liked it too.” Kitty seemed almost hurt that Syrus wasn’t there to try her pie.  I looked around the table at the others. I could tell they were all thinking something similar to me. ‘Why was Kitty not bothered?’ Did she think that Syrus was putting on an act too? I doubt very much that to be the case. Still, a human should definitely have been scared looking at an angry Syrus. His eyes had gone full black. If I were closer, I am sure I would have seen his fangs elongating. Any normal person would have run for the hills. ‘That’s just it, isn’t it?’ my wolf piped in. ‘What do you mean?’ I asked. ‘A normal person. We already know that Kitty isn’t normal. There is no way she is a human, even though we sort of thought she still might be.’ ‘What do you suppose that makes her?’ I asked seriously. ‘A masochist?’ my wolf retorted. At that, I tried not to laugh out loud. I faked a cough instead, acting like pie had gone down the wrong tube. The rest of the table wasn’t the wiser.  “Kitty, this pie is pretty excellent.” My dad praised her.  I watched her reaction closely from across the table. Her eyes started to get that faint glow, and her butt wiggled in her seat. It made her happy when others were happy. In general, Kitty was always happy. It was something different when she felt true recognition for something she did. It lit her up inside.  I yawned and stretched in my chair. “Come on Kitty. Let Eli and Andre have dish duty. We can watch some more of our show before bed.” Kitty looked down at her hands, a frown creeping across her brow. “Um, I think I am going to go home tonight. You know, spend some time with my grandma.” “Sure. I get it.” I was disappointed, but tried not to let it show.  “I can stay this weekend though.” Kitty replied back, her usual chipper self replaced teh frown in an instant. “If that is ok with you, Mr. and Mrs. Anders?” She looked at my parents hopeful. “Kitty. How many times have I told you to call me Mary?” Mom chastised her affectionately. “Can you bring some of your tarragon with you? There is a new recipe I want to try and your tarragon has a better flavor than mine.” “Of course!” Kitty popped ut of her chair and around to Mom. Lately, Kitty had taken to hugging her, like her own mother, before leaving the house. Before I could blink, she went from hugging mom to hugging dad. I watched as he froze for a fraction of a second before hugging her back.  Kitty realized all too late what she had done and a red blush crept up her cheeks. “I’m so sorry Mr. Anders.” She toed the carpet sheepishly. “I’m a bit of a hugger. Not everyone is a higger. Mary is a hugger. I didn’t think. I should have asked - .” Dad cut off her stammering by pulling her back in tightly for another round of hugs. He kissed the top of her head before he let her go. The light in her eyes was unmistakable from where I sat. I doubted the others could see it, but I certainly did. I also noticed the flowers on the table start to grow and brighten a tad.  Kitty waved goodbye to us all before heading out the door. I was sad to see her leave. Itseemed so normal to have her here. I knew she hadn’t spent as much time with her grandmother recently, but I hope that was the only reason. If Kitty stopped coming around because I was Syrus, there would be hell to pay.  “After a night like this, there is only one question that comes to mind.” stated Andre with a serious expression.  “What’s that?” asked Owen, just as serious as Andre. There were plenty of questions that came to my mind. I expected this sort of conversation now that Kitty had left.  “Do you think Kitty left another pie in the oven? She usually makes me extra. Should I text her?” Mom, Dad, and Ella were in stitches again as they got up and left the dining room. Eli shot Andre a nasty look as he gathered up dirty dishes and headed to the kitchen. Owen stared at his Gamma blankly while Orla rolled her eyes. No matter how weird things were, it was always better where Kitty was involved.
