Prologue
The sun was shining brightly over the forest. Its new morning glow casting shadow against the leaves as it began its arch across the pale blue sky. The hare moved gingerly through the underbrush, snacking on the newly grown greenery as it headed back towards it hollow for a long day’s rest. It did not see the amber eyes that watched it. It did not feel the calculating stare that predicted it’s path. Too oblivious from the evening;s scavenging, it did not feel a thing as it’s life slipped away quickly and painlessly, a quick prayer said over it’s now lifeless form.
The new day was slowly drawing out the different predators and prey that walked the woods in the sunlight. Happy with her hunt, Kitty picked up the dead hare between her jaws and began the trot back to her cabin.
The smell of the forest enveloped her. The full vegetation had come to life. She could smell the scent of wildflowers as the breeze pushed it past her snout and through her fiery red fur. The soft earth below her paws felt warm and pillowy as her cabin came into view. Her short pointed ears strained to hear all the sounds.
In the 20 years she had been living here, not a soul had come across her cabin. However, that did not stop Kitty from practicing her normal cautious procedures.
She circled the perimeter of her cabin, hare still hanging from her teeth. She kept herself low, darting quickly from tree to tree. Once behind the cabin, she dropped the hare at the treeline, and made another pass. This time, she used her heightened sense of smell to be certain no one had passed through.
To a stranger who happened upon her, she would likely go unnoticed for what she was. They would be taken aback by her larger than average size, of course. They would certainly wonder about her. Perhaps she was a lost dog, a mixed breed mutt. Her red fur stretching from snout to rump, fading to chocolate brown through her legs, tail, and ears. White coated the underside of her chin and the last few inches of her puffy tail, like they were dunked in milk.
No, no one had ever come into contact with anything like her. To that end, neither had she. It wasn’t until more than a hundred years had passed on this earth that she even knew what she was. Thankfully, places of learning and knowledge began to grow after that time, and with it, her understanding of herself and the world around her.
