Chapter 7 – Peaceful Days
* * *
Miraculously, Daisy did not show her face after yesterday’s events.
It could be that she finally realized her wrongs or that Daisy had decided to move on from her deluded obsession with me. Whatever it is, I decided to go on with my life and let bygones be bygones.
The same thing was promised by Isabella when she finally calmed her nerves.
Before we separated yesterday, I convinced Isabella not to make things bigger between us three. She has all the right to report Daisy to the faculty, but my heart hurts at the thought of it. No matter what, Daisy still plays a big part in my life. Our friendship is not something that could break apart by something like this.
It sounded stupid for someone who said those words to her yesterday, but there is no denying that I will always have a soft spot for her.
“Dane!”
A familiar voice broke the silence that I had. I turned around only to see Isabella, waving happily at me, far from the figure that I could remember when she was being beaten by Daisy.
I forced a smile on my face as she crossed the distance between us. Thankfully, Bella was able to remove the pen marks that Daisy made at yesterday’s fiasco. If not, then a big headache will surely be on our faces right now.
“Hi.”
This should be the perfect time to be talkative, yet only a single greeting escaped my mouth. I couldn’t fathom why, but something weighed heavily within me as I looked at Bella. What Daisy said about her is still ringing in my mind. Those words might have been a petty remark by Daisy, but the fact that there are some truths in it made me feel strained.
Besides not seeing Daisy, there is a part of me screaming that I don’t want to be near Bella as well.
“I’ve been looking for you everywhere…”
Bella tried to catch her breath as she lightly tapped me on my shoulder. The smile on her face did not fade a bit as if nothing stupid happened between us. I somehow felt embarrassed for dwelling so much in the past when the victim of it had long moved on.
“…Well, Dane. I actually have a favor to ask. Could you please listen to it?...”
Bella’s hand that was clinging to my shoulder felt heavy. Even so, I did not push her away and only nodded obediently at her question. I brushed off any trifling thoughts in my head as I gave Bella my attention. There is no use in thinking negatively now that we passed Daisy’s hurdle.
This could just be my teenage hormones kicking in, giving me a lot of unnecessary stories deep within my mind.
“…Great. It was just simple. I need you to go back home every day right after class. Relax and rest body your well since we are already in our third year. Be stress-free, Dane. Let’s graduate together.”
Bella threw a wink at me before rushing away. It was only for a moment, but I was able to catch a glimpse of her reddened cheeks. They were blushing like ripe tomatoes, ready to be harvested. Bella’s words made me feel ashamed of the thoughts I had a while ago.
How could I put her in the dark light when she was nothing but an angel on Earth? Disappointment dawned on me as I scratched my shoulder, thinking that I failed a friend for being a jerk. At the same time, a smile was drawn on my face when I realized that my little infatuation for Bella was not a waste of time on my end.
Guilty as I am, I turned around feeling refreshed and invigorated, yet conflicted.
For now, I nodded at the favor she asked, and it was only proper for me to be the student that she wanted, living my life as carefree as I could be.
However, not a single one of those ideas prepared me for the next thing happening in front of my eyes.
Only a week has passed since I last spoke to Bella, but here she is clinging desperately to me while crying her heart out. I hesitated a lot before I lightly tapped her shoulders, comforting her with my pathetic hands.
Her tears had already drenched a portion of my uniform. I was reading peacefully inside our vacant classroom when Bella came in, already in tears. It did not take much time before she started her outburst without saying a word to me. I looked like an i***t as my book dropped on the floor while I tried to reach out to her.
Moreover, our current position would certainly raise some brows. Bella is unconsciously sitting on my lap as she borrowed my shoulders to cry on.
I don’t want to put any malice on it, but my dirty little mind is actively making me react like an i***t. I swear I’m the biggest dunce in this place as my instinct battles with my will to act like a proper human being.
“No more? Do you want some water?”
Thankfully, she stopped crying before another student entered the room. I was able to breathe properly when she transferred to another chair, leaving my warm legs on their own.
Bella shyly cleaned her face as she tried her best not to look at me. She cried for almost half an hour, making her look like a beaten pulp. Even so, Bella’s natural charm made her appear as a damsel in distress, needing all my attention.
“Dane, what should I do?...”
Tears once again flowed down Bella’s eyes. However, this time, she held most of it and was able to remain composed in her own seat. I gave her some time before she pulled herself to be able to continue her story. I did not say a single word as I kept the distance between us.
“…My boyfriend. He broke up with me. Someone saw us together when we bought that reference book last week. He thought that I was cheating on him.”
I tightly closed my lips after hearing her short explanation. If I’m not mistaken, then Bella is dating the famous captain of our basketball team. Someone who is far from a loser like me.
Some people say that he is a model student – the epitome of youth. I did not give a damn about him until I heard Bella’s grievance. If he is a true man then he will not treat this pitiful woman like this, stupidly trusting someone else’s words.
An ominous sound cracked in my mind as Bella fell into another outburst, filling our classroom with her hopeless cry.
Note: Bella is Isabella’s nickname. I’m not changing names here, just shortening them a bit. ?
