My cat of six years nearly died.

The vet told me she’d ingested something toxic—something she should never have been able to reach.

My husband, however, was convinced its poor digestion stemmed from old age.

The next afternoon, after my prenatal check-up, I stopped by his office to surprise him for lunch.

I happened upon him being intimate with his secretary.

"Won’t she suspect anything?"

"It's just a beast. Even if it dies, what can she do?"

Only then did I realise.

He’d resented the cat from the start—said it was unhygienic, that pregnant women shouldn’t keep pets.

He hadn’t just fed it expired treats.

He’d done it on purpose.

That’s what nearly caused the tragedy.

chapter 1
Fresh from my prenatal check-up at the hospital. I’d intended to drop by my husband’s office for lunch. Outside his door, I overheard a woman’s coquettish voice. “You’re laughing, but if she ever finds out, I’ll be in serious trouble.” The curtains weren't fully drawn. Through the gap, I saw Serena clinging to my husband's arm, acting coy. Instead of pushing her away, he wrapped his arm around her waist: "I'll protect you. What’s there to be afraid of?" "But that cat only got sick because I fed it expired treats. I'm afraid she might..." Zach placed his thumb over her pink lips, silencing her. His eyes brimmed with desire. "It was merely an animal. Even if it died, what could she possibly do to me?" Zach affectionately tapped her nose. "Your thoughts should be focused on me now..." Serena wrapped her arms around his neck and pressed her lips to his. My eyes widened in fury. I was about to storm in—to confront them, to tear away the lie—when my phone buzzed violently. It was the veterinary clinic. The nurse sounded panicked, saying Anna had gone into sudden shock and needed me at the clinic immediately. I glared resentfully at the pair making out in the office. Still, I hurriedly left the company. At the veterinary clinic. "Anna...please stay with me. " Outside the operating theatre, I watched her tiny body covered in tubes. My heart was breaking. Anna was a yellow and white tabby cat. She was the last gift Mum gave me before she passed away. She'd been with me for six years. More than just a cat, she was family. Yesterday afternoon, returning from grocery shopping, I opened the door to find her lying on the floor, barely clinging to life, surrounded by vomit and diarrhoea. I rushed her to the hospital for examination. The vet said, "This condition likely stems from ingesting expired, spoiled cat food." Yet after thorough checks, we found nothing unusual. Zach reassured me: perhaps Anna's ageing had caused digestive issues. To prevent this happening again, he discarded all the old dry food and tinned meals, replacing them with a fresh batch. The matter seemed settled. Yet from what I overheard in the office today, it clearly wasn't an accident. I pray to heaven, please don't be so cruel, don't take her from me... She's my only family in this world. Perhaps heaven heard my plea. Anna survived the emergency treatment. Overwhelmed, I fainted on the spot. When I awoke, I found myself in hospital. Zach's face darkened as he said: "Blair, have you lost your mind? The doctor specifically warned against emotional upheaval for pregnant women. Why won't you listen?" "If anything happens to my child, I'll see what you'll do to make it right!" "Do you have any idea how worried I was?" Zach leaned in to wipe away my tears. But his shirt buttons were undone. As he leaned forward, the kiss mark on his chest came into view, stinging my eyes. When exactly did he start deceiving me? My thoughts drifted away. I recalled when we first got together. Zach would drive all over town in the middle of the night just to buy me the strawberry cake I’d been craving, all because of a passing remark. He’d then present it to me, cradled in both hands, when I lay awake. He’d spend entire days researching cat care guides online, just to look after Anna while I was away on business. After learning of my parents' passing, he'd tell me tenderly that he'd be my rock for the rest of my life. Precisely because his affection was so overwhelmingly passionate, I trusted him completely. For him, I moved alone to his city. Due to the nature of my work, I frequently attended major fashion shows and events. For his single wish—to see me every day after work—I resolutely abandoned my career, content to be a homemaker. On our wedding day. He vowed at the ceremony to love me forever, never to betray me. Yet barely two years have passed. Why has everything changed? Memories solidify from haze. The image of that boy holding a strawberry cake still seemed vivid before my eyes. I couldn't help but ask him: "How long has it been since you last bought me a strawberry cake?" Zach was taken aback by my sudden question. "You're pregnant now. Why are you craving all that junk food?" After a pause, as if recalling something, he added: "The doctor mentioned earlier that it's best not to keep cats during pregnancy." "So I thought once Anna's discharged, we could send her back to my mother's for a while." I immediately protested: "I won't agree! Didn't we discuss keeping Anna with me?" Seeing my emotions flare again, Zach snapped back: "We did discuss it, but look at yourself! What state have you got yourself into over this cat?" Finally, I broke down: "Wasn't it all because Serena fed it that expired cat food that caused this in the first place?!"
