Chapter 8

The next day, Madam Poof took me to a strange place I had never been before in my entire life. She took me to this strange place and left me there to deal with my fears. Alone, I wondered around until I found a big building. It was so big that it seemed like the biggest building I'd ever seen. There were many rooms off of one another all connected by hallways. The halls went back forever, and there were stairs going up to the ceiling, or down to the floor. I walked through each room as I got lost. Each room had its own little theme. One room had waterfalls, and another had a jungle-like setting. In some rooms there were people dancing. Some looked like they came from different countries. Other rooms had animals—a monkey, a tiger, even a dragon! I started walking through these various rooms, looking at everything from the outside. Eventually, I heard music coming from one hallway. Curious, I followed it into a room where people were dancing. Inside, there were more people on the dance floor than anywhere else. They were wearing bright colors, and their hair was very long and flowing. As I watched them dancing, I suddenly felt myself being pulled out onto the dance floor with them. I knew I could not stop myself. So I stepped forward, joining them in their rhythmic movements. My body began to move to the sounds of the music as if someone had taken over my legs. My arms lifted in the air as I moved my head back and forth. I saw a person standing beside me, watching me dance. He seemed surprised at first, but then he smiled, and his eyes lit up. His smile made me feel safe and comfortable. As we danced together, our bodies matched in movement, and soon we became one. We moved as one for hours, until finally, my feet ached, and I fell asleep there in the middle of the room. When I woke up, I realized I was surrounded by people, and they all stared at me. I looked around, confused, wondering what was happening. Then I noticed the man who had watched me dance with him. He stood there smiling at me, and I could tell he wanted something from me. He approached me slowly. I didn't like how slow he was moving. I couldn't understand why he was taking such a long time to get to me. This seemed odd to me, but I didn't have much choice. I had to go with him. We went into a large room filled with tables. There were many other people sitting at those tables eating food. We sat down across from two men who were also staring at us. "This is very interesting," said the man. He turned toward me. "What did you do?" "I don't know," I replied. "You will answer all our questions." "Okay," I agreed. For hours, the man questioned me about who I was, where I was from, and what I was doing there. I answered all of his questions truthfully, and when I was finished, the man said, "Well done." I did not know why the man said what he said, but when I decided to think about the man's words, I found myself in another place entirely. This new place was strange and scary at first, but after a while, I grew used to it. Soon I discovered that the place was beautiful. Everything was white, and there were no sharp edges anywhere. The walls were smooth and rounded, and there were plants everywhere. There were many people around me in the white room. People of every shape and size and color, and they all spoke a language I didn't understand. These people wore pajamas, and most of them were sleeping. I thought these people must be the ones who were dreaming, because I certainly wasn't, and neither was the man who had led me here. Soon I found myself in a room with a huge bed. I was lying on the bed, and I was looking up at the ceiling. It was painted blue and green and brown, and I could see the sun shining through the clouds above me. I could hear the sound of birds singing in the distance. It was a beautiful sight. But then I felt the presence of someone standing behind me. I turned my head and saw that it was the man who had come to me in the dream. "What are you doing here?" I asked him. "I'm your guide." "Why should I trust you? You're just a stranger." He laughed. "Yes, I am a stranger, but I will help you find your way home." "How can you be my guide when you don't even speak English?" I demanded. "I don't need to speak English. I can sense what you want, and I know exactly where to take you." "Fine. Do you know who I am?" "Yes!" The man nodded. "I know who you are, Sophia." The man looked at me deeply in my eyes, and before I knew what was happening, the man vanished into a place I was unaware of. Again, I found myself alone, staring into the sky and thinking about my sad situation. I was now a slave, and I was aware of that fact, but the number of months or years I would spend as a slave was something that I was completely unaware of. I tried to think positively. My situation with my enemies had always been bad in the beginning, but it improved over time, so maybe I'd have a similar experience here especially when the Alpha's son had his eyes on me. And then there were the other slaves. They seemed to be very close-knit and even though they didn't know each other well yet, there was already a strong bond among them. The only thing missing from this picture was me. And I wasn't sure if I wanted to be included in their group at all. I closed my eyes as I tried to focus on the next place that Madam Poof had in mind to send me, but nothing happened. Instead, I found myself back inside my cell with my feet tied together. "You are lucky to experience pleasant memories today," Madam Poof smiled as she looked into my eyes. "I say you are lucky because the next time that you are sent to an unknown place, it won't be buildings that you will see, but evil demons who are fully fit to devour you."
