THE MaN WiTH TWO FACES
The rain hit the windows of Blackwood Tower like bulletS... I stood across the street for 10 minutes, clutching a folder to my chest so tight my knuckles turned white. Inside that folder was my sister's medical bill. $200,000. Due in 7 days. And inside that building was the only man in the city who could make it disappear. Damian Blackwood. CEO of Blackwood Enterprises. Net worth ...8.3 billion. Public image ...Philanthropist, Youngest CEO of the year. Street rumor: The Devil of the East Coast. I wasn’t supposed to be here. I was supposed to be at St. Mary’s Hospital, holding my little sister Lily’s hand while she slept through chemo. Instead I was here. because Dad’s debts didn’t die with him. The glass doors slid open. Cold air and the smell of money hit me. "Can I help you?" The receptionist was perfect. Blonde, blazer, smile that didn’t reach her eyes. "Aria Hale. I have a 9 AM appointment with Mr. Blackwood." My voice shook. She typed something. "Mr. Blackwood is... unavailable." "I was told to come. It’s about the Hale debt." At the word 'debt' her smile vanished. She picked up the phone and murmured something. 30 seconds later, two men in black suits appeared from nowhere. "Miss Hale. This way.. My heart was in my throat. The elevator was all black marble and gold. No buttons. One of the men pressed his thumb to a scanner and we shot up. Floor 50. The doors opened and I forgot how to breathe. The entire floor was glass. Rain slid down the walls. And in the middle of it all, standing with his back to me, was him. He was on a call. Clean it. No traces. And tell Marco if he touches my shipment again, I’ll send him back in pieces." His voice was low. Calm. Like he was ordering coffee. He hung up and turned. And that’s when I saw it. The Man With Two Faces. In the morning light Damian Blackwood looked like he was made for magazine covers. Black suit, tailored to perfection. Dark hair slightly messy Eyes the color of a winter ocean. Cold. sharp, unreadable. This was the CEO. The man who donated to children’s hospitals and shook hands with the mayor. But then I saw his hands. His right knuckles were split and bruised. There was a thin cut under his collar, half hidden by his tie. And when he moved, I saw it. A gun holster under his jacket. This was the other face. The Mafia Don. Aria Hale, he said. He didn’t ask. He stated. "You’re late." "I’m three minutes early," I whispered. A ghost of a smile. "Then you’re three minutes early to ruin your life." He walked past me to a desk bigger than my apartment. The two guards shut the doors and stayed outside. "Your father owed me 2.1 million dollars, he said. No greeting. No small talk. "He borrowed it to cover gambling debts. He died in a car crash 2 months ago. The debt did nOt. I nodded. I already knew. The loan sharks had been calling me for weeks. So, he leaned back in his chair. "Why are you here, Miss Hale? To beg? To cry? I don’t do charity." I lifted my chin. My sister needed me to be brave. "I’m here to work it off." He laughed. Once. It had no humor. "Work it off? With what? You’re 24. A nurse. You make 40k a year. It would take you 52 years." "I’ll do anything." The words tasted like ash. "Anything." The room went quiet. Only the rain. He studied me. Like I was a problem to solve. Or a weapon to use. "Anything," he repeated. Then he stood. He was tall. 6'3 maybe. And when he walked around the desk, the air changed. He stopped in front of me. Too close. I could smell his cologne. Cedar and something darker. Metal. "I need a wife," he said. I blinked. "What?" "A wife. For 6 months. Contract." He pulled a folder from his drawer. Thicker than mine. "My enemies are circling. A married man is harder to target. My son needs a mother figure. And you... you need 2.1 million dollars." My mouth went dry. "You want me to marry you? A stranger?" "Not marry. Contractually bind." He opened the folder. "Terms: No love. No intimacy unless agreed for public appearances. You live in my penthouse. You attend events with me. You protect my son. In return, I pay your sister’s medical bills. In full. Today." I looked at the papers. Legal jargon. Signatures. And at the bottom, a line that made my blood run cold. _Clause 9: In the event of breach, all debts are reinstated with 200% interest._ "This is insane," I breathed. "You can’t buy a person." "I’m not buying you," he said quietly. "I’m saving you. There’s a difference." For a second, the CEO mask slipped. I saw it. Under the coldness, under the power. Exhaustion. And something else. Loneliness. He turned away and looked out at the city. The rain. "My wife died 2 years ago. Car bomb. Meant for me. My son Noah is 8. He hasn’t spoken a full sentence since." His voice was flat. "The board wants me to remarry. The families want to see me weak. A contract keeps everyone happy. And keeps you alive." Alive. That word hit me. The loan sharks had left a brick through my window last night. With a note: _Pay or we take the girl._ They meant Lily. I closed my eyes. This was a deal with the devil. But the devil was offering to save my sister. "What’s the catch?" I asked. "No falling in love," he said immediately. "No asking about my business. No leaving the penthouse without security. And you will sign an NDA that would make your lawyer cry." "And if I say no?" He turned back to me. And the Don face was back. Fully. "Then I can’t help you. And the men I sent away from your apartment 10 minutes ago will come back." Fear shot through me. "You knew?" "I know everything that happens in my city, Miss Hale." I had no choice. I knew it. He knew it. My hand shook as I picked up the pen. "One question," I said before signing. "Why me? There are a hundred women who would kill for this." He looked at me. Really looked. For the first time. "Because you’re not one of them. And because your father, for all his flaws, once saved my life." That was the last thing I expected. I signed. Aria Hale. The moment the pen left the paper, he snapped his fingers. An assistant appeared with another folder. "Hospital bill. Paid. Transfer confirmation sent to St. Mary’s." My phone buzzed. A text from the hospital: _Payment received. Balance: $0_ I started crying. Not pretty crying. Ugly, relieved sobs. "Hey." His voice was softer now. He didn’t touch me. "Breathe." I nodded, wiping my face. "When do we... start?" "Tonight. Gala at the Ritz. You’ll be on my arm. We announce the engagement." "Engagement?" "Marriage in 2 weeks. Contract states 6 months from wedding date." He was already back to CEO mode. "My driver will take you to get a dress. Don’t argue. You can’t wear that to meet 500 of the city’s elite." I looked down. Jeans and a hoodie. Right. "One more thing, Miss Hale." He walked me to the elevator. "Rule number one. Do not believe the CEO." "And rule number two?" "Never trust the Don." The elevator doors closed. As I went down, I realized something. I had just signed my life away to a man with two faces. And I had no idea which one would destroy me first. The doors opened to the lobby. The driver was waiting. And outside, across the street, I saw them. Two men in a black SUV. Watching. Loan sharks. The driver saw them too. He put his hand inside his jacket. "Miss, get in the car. Now." And just like that, my new life began.
