“Wow that’s, a lot.” I held a warm cup of tea in my lap. “But of course, I’m just as in the dark as you when it comes to what my life was like before all of this..but there’s people like us everywhere. Most just prefer to be alone. I honestly think it’s better that way.” she snuggled up to me. “I didn’t think that I could actually have powers. I mean I’ve done weird things, I just never thought of it like that.” My finger tips tingled against the hot cup. “As long as you put your mind to it there’s things you can do way beyond what humans can. You just have to concentrate on what that is and focus.” She played with strands of my hair. “But, I can’t keep lying to Matthew we have to tell him everything.” I begged refusing to push him away. “Well, he might just flip out once he finds out about ‘her’.” She refuted. I rubbed my forehead out of stress. “Well we just explain it to him right? He’s stayed by my side this entire time.” I pressed. “Days after you and his Ex-girlfriend have a massive fight; she winds up dead? He may be a fool for you, but I doubt he’s that gullible.” She sipped calmly. “This is just too much.” I folded my arms contemplating everything. “Look. If he truly loves you and wants to be with you forever. I’m sure he’ll believe you. How he reacts? I can’t say.”
In that moment, as she touched me, I felt a strange sense of fear. I tried to hone in on it but couldn’t place where it was coming from. She then reached into her bag looking for something. “Uh, that doesn’t seem like enough sugar for your tea.” I noted as she pulled out a small bag of crystal powder pouring it on her tray. She then looked at me with a giggle, “I admire how innocent he’s kept you. He must really want to protect you from the world.” She then bent down inhaling the substance through her nose. I immediately grew uncomfortable once I realized what she was doing. She looked at me while wiping her nose, “Don’t worry. This stuff doesn’t affect us like normal people. I’d say it’s even better.” She became slightly dazed. “Matthew told me stuff like that is bad no matter who you are.” I pulled my knees into my chest. She, of course, grew annoyed. “Well when you’re stuck on this planet for maybe the rest of your endless life. You learn to see good in the bad.” She promptly got up to get more tea. “Endless?” I followed her. She nodded while wiping her nose again. “When I woke up here, I believe Russia had just put the first woman in space. A great feat for ‘my’ country at the time.” She carried on while pouring, “Of course similar to you, I knew nothing and was frightened, but soon a young man in a uniform came along and immediately helped me without a second thought.” She played with her ring unconsciously. “Soon, trouble came once Evan discovered me. It’s like he knew everything about me. Like, before I was even ‘born’ he knew who I was and was waiting for me.”
“Sounds like we have similar stories.” I followed her back to the couch. “How did it…end?” I knew it was a touchy subject but needed to know. “A couple decades went by and he was no longer in the military. We moved around a lot because you can’t really explain a young wife while you’re old enough to be her father. And then he came after me one last time. That’s when Mira finally came into my life. And though are interactions were brief, she gave me this ring so I didn’t have to worry about him finding us again. Little did I know, Evan was already at my home. And..when I came back..” her eyes quickly tensed up and I tried comforting her but she retreated. “Just when I was finally safe he took the one thing I cared most about.” Her voice sharpened. I didn’t know what to say and felt bad for prying. “Now that Mira is dead there’s really nothing left for me here. I just wish there was something that could bring him back and we’d be together forever.” She rambled which then triggered a memory in my mind.
“Keep an eye on those close to you. Even if they are family. Protect him Lily, so he can protect you.” -M
“It’s not for you.” ”
I remembered the vial the messenger gave me. I never truly knew what it did but now I had an idea. “What about the vials? What if Mira left you something that could do exactly that?” I vaguely brought it up. “Well even if there was one, I wouldn’t know where find it now that she’s dead.” She kicked then glanced at me. I didn’t want her knowing about it so I made an excuse to leave. “I have to get home. Matthew’s probably worried I didn’t call him yet.” I put my coat on quickly. “Just one sec-”
“I have to get going.” I cut her off and raced to the door. Before I could open it, she appeared behind me grabbing my hand. I tried to resist her but the look on her face told me she knew. She then grew a look of resentment as she let me go. I rushed out of there not wanting to look back.
I made it home with a relived sigh. I opened the door as I prepared myself for a lecture from Matthew. “I know I should have call-” I looked up to see him sitting on the couch with something in his hands. “When we’re you gonna tell me about this?” He held it up and it was the vial. I quickly tried to take it from him but he moved it away from me. “Lily.” He said sternly. I ran my hands through my hair nervously then sat down next to him. “I can’t keep doing this.” He spoke softly, “I need to know everything. No more secrets.” He placed his hand on my thigh.
A FEW MOMENTS LATER
He sat there with a blank expression. “And..there may be a possibility that what’s ever in that vial will make you live forever or at least keep you from dying..possibly.” I rocked back and forth awkwardly. He let out a hasty sigh looking down at the vial. “You know in any other scenario I would probably put you ‘and’ me into a psych ward.” He joked but was still somewhat upset. “You promise me that’s everything?” He stared me directly in the eyes. I didn’t bring up what happened to Kelly because I knew he’d never find out about it. I shamefully nodded not even able to give a verbal response. “And this Patricia? Is she cool?” He finally put the vial down focusing on how I was feeling. “Well, I’m not sure. I mean, she’s been helpful, but things kinda got weird when she found out I had this. I think she might want to take it from us.” I sat next to him in a heap. He examined it once more then handed it to me. “Good, then let’s give it to her.” He quickly agreed to my shock. “But what about..” I was slightly hurt he didn’t want to keep it just in case something were to happen. “Look, I don’t wanna take anything even if it came from someone you trusted. Plus, she’ll never leave you alone now. So let’s just give it to her; she’ll be too busy saving her husband, or whatever, to bother you.” He shrugged to my dismay. I got up trying to decide what to do and that’s when my phone rang. I answered it and Patricia was on the other end frantic.
“You have to give him the vial Lily. I don’t know how but Evan’s here and he’s going after you again.” She sputtered her words. I froze then immediately remembered the necklace I threw in the drawer and how I no longer had its protection. “B-but we agreed to give it to you. He’s not gonna take it.” I whispered. “Just give put it in his drink. He won’t notice. You have to hurry I don’t know if I can make it in time to stop him.” I could hear her driving. I quickly hung up and turned back to Matthew. “She, uh, said she’s gonna try and find another vial. I’m sure Mira was smart enough to make more.” I felt terrible for telling him another lie. “Well that’s a relief. So now what?” He shrugged. I went up to him kissing him deeply while proposing we have a drink. “You never really were the drinking type?” He joked as I guided him to the kitchen getting a bottle of dark whiskey. “Even if I don’t drink that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy you while you do.” I smiled. “That’s a little messed up. But I’ll allow it.” He hinted. I poured a glass for him but stopped before I gave it to him. “Oh, can you get my phone off the couch.” I distracted him and dumped the vial in as he went to get it. I picked the glass up handing it to him. “No ice?” He questioned staring at it deeply. My heart was racing as I went to the freezer. I scooped up ice as he stood unknowingly. I dumped the ice the waited and he took his first sip. Seconds went by.
Nothing.
PATRICIA’S POV
“This better f*****g work.” I pulled my book from under my bed opening it. I turned to a specific page then pulled out my phone. I dialed the number in the book then held the phone to my ear. “Hello?~” A deep voice answered. “I need to speak with a messenger quickly, preferably Phineas. I have a package that needs immediate delivery.” I sternly spoke. They tried protesting request but I wasn’t taking no for an answer. “If he isn’t at my f*****g doorstep in 30 seconds I will-” There was a bang on my door. I quickly hung up and rushed to the door. On the other end stood exactly the boy I wanted to talk to. “Hello there, darling.” I smiled at his dorky looking face before grabbing his collar and pulling him in. I threw him onto my couch and he looked at me in horror. “For the past year you have been delivering packages to a cute little lady by the name of ‘Lily’. I want to know exactly what you gave her last and what it does. If you try to run I’ll kill your before you make it to the door.” I smiled leaning into him. He cowardly winced before speaking. “M-mira d-didn’t give me any details. She j-just said it was important and that Matthew would need it in the f-future.” He stuttered his words. I then sat next to him in an endearing manner. “I’m going to give you one more try Phineas. And if you don’t tell me, I slit your throat and throw you in the river.” I spoke softly. Seconds passed, and he then began lightly chuckling. “It doesn’t matter what I tell you. All vials are bound by blood. If you take it, it won’t work on anyone else but him. Plus, she’d kill you before you could.” His tone shifted. I frustratingly grabbed him by the throat. “There has to be a way to transfer its power. Tell me.” I squeezed tightly. He was still chuckling and reached into his messenger bag. “Once he takes it, it won’t be affective until he awakens. That’ll give you 5-10 minutes to kill him and then the potion is no longer bound. But like I said she’ll kill you before you can try.” He pulled a device out of his bag and quickly activated it. It let out a large puff of smoke which filled my entire home. I cleared through the smog only for him to be nowhere to find.
LILY’S POV
Matthew fell to the ground unconscious and I immediately ran to his aid. “Oh no, wake up. Wake up!” I began shaking him to no avail. I checked the cup to see he drank all of the vial’s contents. I tried to remain calm and that’s when I noticed a glowing pattern forming on his skin. “It’s working..” I whispered as it began shining brighter. Soon a knock rang out from the front door and I quickly grabbed a kitchen knife to defend myself. “It’s me Lily!” Patricia’s voice spoke. I let my guard down then ran to open the door. She came in and stopped as she noticing the spell working on him. “So, It is real..” she kneeled next to him. “Do you think he’ll be okay?” I came next to her. “Well it’s definitely working. We just have to finalize it.” Her breath became choppy and she snatched the knife from me raising it over his chest. “What are you doing?!” I held her arm forcing her away from him. “Don’t worry I’m not gonna kill him! Shedding his blood is the only way to complete it. Or else, he’ll forget about you and everything interactive you two have had. He’ll go back to his normal life and he’ll never know you existed. So we have to finish it.” She thoroughly explained. I shook my head not wanting to make sense of her sketchy plan. “Lily we have to or else Evan will take him from you just like he did to me.” She pleaded.
“I’m sorry..” I whispered then turned to her. “I can’t. I don’t want this. Not anymore.” I took the knife and held it to her whilst protecting a still unconscious Matthew. She held her hands up with sincere disappointment, “You’re making a mistake Lily. Nothing good can come from this. I know it first hand.” She still tried to convince me. I looked over my shoulder to Matthew looking almost lifeless as I held back tears. “That was you and your situation. This is.. different.” I look back at her stepping closer. “Now, I don’t want you coming around me anymore. We’re done, you hear me? Done.” I confidently spoke. She looked as if she was gonna give one last plea, but before she could; a dark abyss grew around her as a figure began manifesting. That’s when I realized, it was Evan. “No!” I screamed kneeling over Matthew’s body to protect him. He appeared behind her pinning her arms. “Mind if I borrow her? We have a lot of catching up to do.” He smiled devilishly and they both disappeared into that same abyss. I shivered after finally being free of the situation. I looked down to see the markings fading on Matthew’s body. I ran my hands over his face and through his hair praying that he’d snap out of it.
He eventually came to and I was fearful he had actually forgotten me. He rubbed his eyes sitting up, “What..happened?” He looked around confused rubbing his chest. “I-I think you had too much to drink is all.” I hid the knife behind my back as I helped him up. I guided him to the couch and he plopped down still confused. “I had the weirdest nightmare.” He tried his hardest to remember what happened while he was knocked out. “How do you feel?” I examined him and no longer saw the markings. “Just a little dizzy is all.” He rubbed his eyes. I was relieved he was practically fine. “Did something happen?” He grew concerned taking my hand. I shook my head, “You just scared me is all.” I leaned over kissing him. As I kissed him I could feel a certain energy about him was different. I was feeling his emotions a lot more than I could before. I sensed that he was scared, not just of our situation..but of me. I retreated from the kiss and his face told a different story. I didn’t want to say anything not to draw suspicion.
I helped him into the shower as he was still groggy. “Don’t go passing out in here okay?” I joked removing his shirt. I watched his behavior to try and see any change that may have occurred from the vial, but there was nothing. ‘Maybe it didn’t work’ I thought to myself in denial. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost or something.” He turned on the shower head questioning my staring. “Sorry, I guess seeing naked still makes me flustered.” I looked away. “Well you can always join me.” He smiled and I immediately began removing my clothes. We stepped into the shower as the hot water drenched us. We began kissing and I wrapped my hand around the back of his neck. I could feel he was completely in love with me in that moment and welcomed it. He pulled me closer and I kissed his neck only to taste something dark and metallic. I opened my eyes to blood bleeding down his back and shoulder. I felt his neck and noticed a small gash from when he fell. I was shocked as his lack of reaction. ‘He can’t feel it?’ I thought. It quickly healed on its own from the water and he was to focused on me to even notice.
PATRICIA’S POV
“How did you know his blood would work same as the vial?” He leaned into my face. “It’s not rocket science.” I kept trying to free my hands. My tongue tasted like copper from him forcing me to drink his blood. “See this is why I wanted you by my side. You’re smart, intuitive, and beautiful.” He ran his hand over my face. “And to think she almost fell for your little trap. Impressive, selfish, but impressive.” He smiled. “But I can’t help but wonder. What would you have done with her. You know what they say, a woman scorned or something like that.” I didn’t respond to the thought. “Don’t tell me? Were you actually gonna try and kill her? Now you and I both know that killing your own? Big no no. Plus, the things that woman can do to me and you?” He shook his head. “You’re one to talk.” I spat. “Well that’s the thing darling.” He held up a knife to my chest, “I’m not like you or her.” He then stepped back not wanting to harm me just yet. I looked confused. “Oh, after all this time I thought you’d figure it out? Guess you’re not as smart as I thought you were. What a shame.” He rubbed his chin.
“I don’t give a f**k who or what you are. Just get it over with. I’m tired of this f****d world.” I spat on the floor. He then let out a laugh that sounded like multiple voices layered over each other. “Foolish. If you truly think all I have to offer is the sweet release of death. Then you truly are simply not smart.” He put the knife away.
“Now..let’s get to the fun part.”
