Lost On You

(Read Author’s Notes) WEEKS LATER “It’s fine. Just concentrate, focus, and poof! Something should happen.” Matthew cheered me on as we sat in a busy city restaurant. “I can’t really do anything if I don’t know what actually abilities I have.” I complained. “Well you’ve done things before. So try and do ‘that’ again.” He sounded more excited than me. “That’s the thing. I’ve only ever done things when you or I was in danger. And we’re not in any danger.” I explained getting discouraged. Matthew nodded then got up leaving the table. He looked around to see a security guard standing alone, then approached him abruptly. “What are you doing?” I tried waving him down but he ignored me tapping the guard’s shoulder. “My girlfriend over there just stole 5000 dollars worth of jewelry. It’s in her bag, go check.” He said with a bright smile. The guard then looked at me and I hid behind my chair embarrassed. “What is he doing!?” I said to myself. I heard him approaching and closed my eyes in fear. As he got closer I whispered for him to leave me alone. He grabbed my shoulder and I looked up to see him staring confused. It was like his memory had been wiped or something. “I uh, forgot why I came over here. Are you okay miss?” He was confused as he did in fact forget what Matthew told him. He eventually left and I punch Matthew in the arm cursing him as he came back. “How did you know I could do that?” I asked, impressed with myself. “I didn’t.” He chuckled. We played around by making different patrons do various things such as; making the waitress forget orders over and over, compelling the people next to us to sing Karaoke obnoxiously, and selfishly getting our food for free. “Only promise is that you don’t make me do anything against my will. I would like hate you for it.” Matthew laughed holding out his pinky. “Oh, I don’t need powers to do that.” I seductively spoke while pinky-promising him. I then excused myself and gave him a kiss on the cheek. It was an admittedly long walk to the restroom, and I pushed through the bar section briskly. “Hey pretty lady. Can I buy you a drink?” A sleazeball slurred his words as I passed him. “No, thank you.” I politely smiled even though I could smell his stale breath from afar. “Whatever..” he scoffed and I found the restroom. I quickly freshened up checking myself and dress in the mirror before exiting. I had a strange gut feeling rush over me and I just brushed it off as fatigue from using my powers. I made my stretch back to our table but was stopped by the same drunken patron. “Playing hard to get? I get it, or else you wouldn’t walk past me twice.” He sloppily grinned pulling me close for a kiss. “Back off!” I tried yanking my arm but his grip was too strong. I looked around desperately as other men laughed and brushed off the altercation. “Hey watch it!” Matthew appeared out of nowhere pushing the guy away, “Hey! Chill out man! Chick’s just some slut. Look at how she’s dressed.” He slapped his arm which then prompted Matthew to punch him square in the face without hesitation. He fell like a sack of soggy potatoes to everyone’s shock. Matthew then began pummeling him relentlessly as people began to gather around. “Matthew stop!” I shouted trying to hold him back but it was impossible with his strength. I kept pleading as he began choking him forcibly. I looked to see people watching in horror as his blood began to splatter on the tiled floor. I grabbed him one more time only for him to instinctively swing hitting me in the face. I fell back in pain and he immediately stopped and snapped out of whatever possessed him. The guy was thankfully still alive but was coughing up a lot of blood. “We have to go.” I held my face as he picked me up. “I’m sorry I don’t know what came over me.” He was genuinely confused by his actions. The crowd grew bigger and we ran out of the restaurant before any cops could arrive. We made it outside to the car and I could see my arm transforming once again; so I tried my best to control it not wanting to accidentally hurt him. I watched as he fumbled with his shaky and bloody hands to start the car. I placed mine on top of his and he was instantly calmed looking to my for comfort. His eyes were still dazed and deep in thought. My heart broke even more once he checked the mirror only to see his crazed blood splattered face; which prompted him to punch the dash. “It’s okay..” I consoled him only for him to abruptly shout but he stopped himself before he could say anything. Once the car finally started, we didn’t say a word to each other even we made it home. It was a quiet evening, and Matthew seemingly avoided me all day to my chagrin. The situation and his actions were too awkward and uncomfortable to even talk about; but I felt like he had already figured things out on his own. I could sense his negative feelings boiling over but was too in denial about the severity of what I’d done to him. I eventually grew tired of waiting for him to come to bed and I eventually fell into a nap. By the time I woke up, our room was practically half empty with only my things left. I rushed out to see him with a few suitcases already packed and out the door. “Please don’t tell me we’re moving again because of that guy? He was just some drunk perv who got what he deserved. I doubt he’ll press charges.” I complained only for him to stop me. “I’m leaving Lily..just me.” He put it simply not wanting to look me in the eye. I was taken aback refusing to accept what he just said. “What are you saying?” I crossed my arms. He thought for a while barely able to get his words out and my heart was now racing. “When you snuck gave me that stuff, and I passed out. I had a dream. A dream that you killed me. Of course my first thought was, ‘This would never happen. She loves me too much.’ And then I woke up, and saw you, felt you, sensed you, and something deep down told me that that wasn’t a dream. It was real.” His eyes were red with tears. “I don’t think you realized it but in that moment I saw everything about you. Our life together, what Evan did to you, and I saw what happened to Kelly. After seeing what Patricia did or better yet what ‘you’ caused. I’m honestly terrified of you Lily.” His voice shuttered in a way I never heard before. I felt my heart sink into my stomach and was to stunned to speak. “And.. when that guy grabbed you. I didn’t just want to beat him up. I wanted to kill him. I mean really..” he mimicked a strangling motion as his voice cracked. “I really want to be with you forever. I really want to protect you. But unless you or I end this now, neither of us will be safe or happy. And I truly want you to be safe and happy without me.” He grabbed my hand one last time. “I’d kiss you, but I know I’d never leave if I did.” He ran his thumb over my hand before pulling away. I felt my entire body shut down to the point where I couldn’t even bring myself to cry or beg him to stay. He wiped his eyes then pulled his keys out of his pocket. “I, uh, want you to keep everything. The apartment, the car, I even left you enough money until you get on your feet. But aside from that, I don’t ever want to see you again.” He bit his lip turning away to the door. He gave me one last glance hoping I would try to stop him but I was completely frozen. He tried his best to hide his pain as he closed the door behind him. In that moment everything faded to black and I felt hollow and empty. MATTHEW POV I packed two suitcases into the cab, “I have one more I gotta get.” I told the driver giving him an extra tip so he wouldn’t leave with my stuff. I hoped to only make one trip to avoid going back but the third suitcase was too heavy to carry with the others. I quickly, but anxiously headed back up the apartment building as my mind ran over everything I said to her. My throat felt like it was going to close as I got closer to our apartment. As I made it too the floor, I almost fell to my knees at the sound of Lily’s cries echoing through the hallway. It felt like needles through my heart and pins in my ears as she grieved. I truly wanted to leave for her sake, but it was like something inside me was telling me to go to her. It truly took everything in my power not to run back in their to her and hold her until she stopped crying. But I was better to leave, than continue this cycle of danger between us and those who wanted to hurt us. I grabbed the suitcase as ruckus could be heard on the other side of the door. I didn’t even want to imagine what she was doing but knew she wasn’t dumb enough to hurt herself, or at least commit to it. I placed my hand on the door while barely holding back tears; giving one last goodbye before I finally walked away. I made it back to the cab driver who thankfully didn’t leave. “Where to?” He asked as I sank into the seat. “The airport.” I quietly spoke sitting back. As we drove my phone buzzed and I assumed it was Lily. I pressed silent not even wanting to see her caller ID picture. Out of nowhere, the phone rang again and I pressed the button again. I became unsettled as it persisted and finally gave in answering it. “..Hello.” I cleared my throat only for it to not be Lily on the other end but someone who’s voice I didn’t recognize. ~“Hello Matthew, I’m glad we can finally talk.” ~~~ Support a young writer ^-^ $Alexandrianalls
