An Unrest in Tension

I had been walking for a while and I could feel my stomach growling heavily as I made it to town. Snow filled my boots and I kicked through it determined to get where I was going. I quickly went to the nearest diner and sat at the counter ringing the bell. A lady with a coffee pot came out pouring a cup for me. "Thanks. Do you guys have a phone?" I wrapped my hands around the piping cup warming myself. She pointed behind me and I gave her a dollar for the coffee. I then got up pulling the rolled up paper out my pocket. 'If you ever need a little birdy' I read again then pressed in the number listed. The phone rang as I anxiously waited. The ringing went on eventually stopping and I sighed feeling defeated. I hung up but as I turned away the phone began ringing itself. I quickly picked it up muttering a 'Hello?' "I was wondering how long it would take for you to call me." I could hear her blowing smoke out her mouth as she spoke eagerly. I could feel myself getting choked up, "I really need your help. I think someone's after me." I whispered trying not let the people in the diner hear me. "Well that's what happened when you're a beautiful woman no?" She chuckled. "No it's not like that." I shot back, "Two people we know have been murdered." I explained. I could feel her stiffen up through the phone as she paused. "Did you see the people who did it?" She was now concerned. "One of them saw me, but his face was covered. He knows where we live." I felt helpless replaying the events in my head. "Look. I know you said I need to figure things out myself, but I need to know. Are there others like us, and if so are there people out to get us as well?" I sternly asked looking around me. She gave another pause then cleared her throat, "Well if you want a short answer, yes." I felt my heart sink as she said those words. "And if you want the long answer we have to talk in person. I'll come to you. It'll be a few days but in the meantime you need to make sure you stay together. You'll be fine in the meantime." She spoke quickly. "You can't expect me to wait that long." I began to slightly panic, "And plus I don't think he wants me around anymore." I moped. "Well you and I both know that's not true. The truth might upset him, but they always come back." She hung up and I limply put the phone back on the hook. I sat back down and my coffee was now cold as I stirred it. I thought back to the fight between me and Matthew and didn't want to go back home but knew I had to. I decided to just call him instead of talking face to face. As I picked up the phone a hand grabbed me which made my skin go cold. "You're just determined to cause problems aren't you." Another hand came around my waist. I turned around to see it was the guy from the club. "Why are you following me?" I fearlessly stood up to him. He smirked trying to grab my face and I smacked his hand away. "You're a lot more confident since the last time we spoke." He didn't let up as he held my waist closer to him. "Of all the ones I've seen, met, and touched. They're nothing compared to you." He leaned further in sniffing my hair and let out a moan. "You smell just like her..." his lips grazed mine and I pushed him away grabbing my coat nearing the exit. "It's only a matter of time love." He called out as I left. I looked back to see he was gone and no one around gave a reaction. I made my way back down the street as the wind began picking up. I regretted walking here even more as my legs were now aching. The streets were populated which made me feel safer amongst what just happening. As I made it to the main road, I tripped over a pothole which sent me tumbling into the snow. A car then pulled up almost immediately as I fixed my boots. "Need a ride?" An unfamiliar voice called out rolling their window down. I stood back up now shivering cold, "No. Thank you though." I dismissed walking off. The car trekked behind me and he shouted out again. "It's getting pretty bad. I can just take you down half way there if that helps." He insisted. I shook my head but he kept pressing which irritated me. I stood my ground and bent down the window meeting his face. I froze looking in his eyes and he gave a smirk pulling a knife from this pocket, "You sure you'll get to him before I do." He gestured for me to get in. I hesitantly but obediently got in not taking my eyes off of him and the knife. "Good girl." He smiled driving off. I examined him further and I could tell he was the guy the police were after. He grew silent and I knew it was a matter of time before he made it to our house. "The police said there was two of you." I tried to divert his attention but he was too focused on driving. He held the knife over the wheel as I looked around trying to find a distraction. I began to remove my coat and he snapped pointing the knife to my torso. "Don't try to get cute." He warned as I continued taking it off. "You know if you're gonna kill me you might as well tell me why." I protested turning to him. He glanced at me self consciously, "Unless...you don't know." I deduced from his change in emotion. "Look, all I know is that some very important people would be a lot happier to see you dead. And I'm just the middle man." He boldly asserted himself. We began slowing down and he pulled over to the side of the road. He sat back letting out sigh and looked around as if he were waiting for someone. I tried to reach for the door handle but he quickly lunged over me grabbing my hand. "What did I say?!" He shouted and I coward back. I looked down to see his arm had been bleeding, "You should get that fixed." I sharply spat at him. "All thanks to you huh?" He fixed the wrapping looking back at me. "Why didn't you just do it then? You're going through all this trouble, so why did you let us go last night?" I continued pressing him as I grew more anxious. "You know. I was worried I was in over my head I'll admit that. But I don't think you're as big and bad as they say." He leaned back over, "I mean it didn't take much to get you in here." He ran his hand over my thigh which I rejected. "Either you're that dumb or you must really care about him." He continued running his hand over me. "I wonder how much I'll get if I just keep you alive and give you to them directly." He tried to pull my face towards him and I pushed him away scratching his face. He painfully groaned then grabbed me by the throat choking me. I flailed my arms trying to get him off but he squeezed harder slamming me against the window. I eventually lost consciousness which made him stop in a heavy breath. I sank back in the seat as everything faded. I eventually came back to my senses to see him staring at his face in the mirror. "Fuck..." he tried cleaning himself up and I looked down to see my hands bound with zip ties. "You sure got some fight in you." He looked back to me and I was now in the back seat. "What are you even waiting for?!" I shouted at him as I struggled to try and free my hands. "Eva wanted me to keep you and make sure you don't interfere." "Interfere with what?" I immediately asked. He chuckled as he came into the back bending over me. "Once your little boyfriend isn't our problem then you can ask her yourself." He booped my nose mockingly as my heart stopped. As he turned away I quickly grabbed his arm, "I can fix you." I explained pointing to his arm and face. "I'm sure you can." He sarcastically suggested but I insisted. "Look." I pulled up the wrapping and pressed my hand on the poor healing wound. Moments later, I removed my hand to see his arm healed. "See." I then reached for his neck and he grabbed my hands, "Don't get brave." He warned then let me proceed. I pressed my hand over the scratches, as they began healing. Once I finished he look in the mirror staring in awe at his face. I sat up and looked down at my hand and noticed it began glowing a dark grey-black. I looked back to him as he began convulsing and his eyes were now bloodshot. "What did you do?" He turned trying come at me but fell into the seat. I stared in fear as he held his neck trying to breathe. He eventually stopped moving and I reached into his belt getting the knife. I cut my restraints then checked his pulse only to not feel one. I looked around to see no one around then grabbed my coat opening the door. I fell out the car and began running down the road. I didn't want to process what just happened and was too afraid to look back. Matthew's POV: "Hey I was wondering if my girlfriend came by there some time this morning..." I described Lily to the diner owner over the phone in hopes she went to town. He said he wasn't sure if she came by but did see a woman come in to use their phone. He sounded familiar though I couldn't place him. I then thanked him hanging up in frustration. I tossed my phone on the bed as I heard a knock on the front door. I quickly headed down assuming it was her. I began apologizing before I even opened the door only to be shocked to see it wasn't her. A woman stood with a soft smile swaying back and forth. "Oh I'm sorry. Can I help you?" I asked as she let herself in looking around. "How quaint..." she turned to me with that same smile, "To think she would settle in a place so...rural." She sighed. "Do I know you?" I examined her. She then finally addressed me, "You never thought it was strange? Beautiful girl shows up and knocks you off your feet. Then all this suspicion...and death follows her." She crossed her arms. "What's it to you?" I challenged her but was still intrigued. She shrugged, "I just think it's interesting is all. It's so easy to want to feel like you're special; like you're the only one in their world. And then a little miss perfect shows up and now you're just an insignificant, regular person." She trailed off staring at me. Before I could respond I heard movement outside the front door. I looked over and saw Lily stumble to the ground out the window. I attempted to open the door but she grabbed my arm and face forcing a kiss onto me. I tried to push her away but I somehow couldn't move as she continued. Lily's POV: I tirelessly tried to keep myself up as I made it back to the house rushing to the porch. I fell to ground in complete exhaustion and looked down to see my hands were covered in the scar pattern. I immediately reached into my pocket taking out the vial popping the top off. Before I could take a sip, I noticed someone was in the house. I went to the window and peaked through the curtains only for my heart to sink. Matthew stood with a woman wrapped around him as they kissed. I expected him to push her away but they kept going and I eventually looked away. I limped to the stairs unable to stop tears from falling down my face and I held my head. Grief and anger equally overcame me and I covered my chest in pain. I tried to calm down but pain only got worse so I pulled the vial back out and chugged all that was left. I dropped it in the snow as my heart rate came down and I was finally calm. Getting back up, I walked to the door and let myself in expecting to still see them. Matthew shamefully stood in front of me knowing what I saw. I didn't have the words to speak but before I could muster any she wrapped her arm around my neck holding a knife to it. "I knew that f**k-up would let you go." She groaned as we struggled, "He should have just killed you." She spat. "You'd love that wouldn't you? Too bad. He was dead last I checked." I spat back which made her freeze. I then pulled his knife out of my boot ramming it into her leg. She dropped me to the ground anxiously looking around as she bled. Matthew helped me up as she limped to the door. "You got lucky this time, but don't think you're safe. He'll still find you." She ran out the house. I tried going after her but she mysteriously disappeared by the time I was outside. My throat was completely shot and sore taking in the situation. Matthew came behind me and I pushed him away walking back inside. He still followed and I tried to close the bathroom door on him to no avail. I started the bath taking my clothes off, "Are we not gonna talk about what just happened? Who's dead?" He asked closing the door behind us. "Someone who's no longer our problem." I nonchalantly said getting in. "So now what? We go off the radar for murder?" He paced and I shot him down. "You didn't do anything. Plus I'm gonna leave in a few days anyway. I don't want you to be apart of any of this." I explained as I cleaned myself up. "What? You can't just leave. Where are you gonna go?" He came to me trying to change my mind. I shook my head looking to him. "It doesn't matter. I'm sorry it got like this." I eventually got out grabbing a towel. He followed me out grabbing me, "I know I was upset and frankly I still am. But that doesn't automatically mean I want you to leave." He exclaimed. He tried leaning in for a kiss and I turned my head away. He let me go and I went to my room locking the door behind me. I slid down to the floor in tears and frustration. Eva's POV: I dragged Michael's body into the foyer cursing him for f*****g things up. My leg was still bleeding as I dropped him falling to the floor. "Well that was expected." A voice rang out and I turned to see Evan coming down the stairs. "It wouldn't be if you hadn't taken my powers." I argued getting up. "I told you. Whenever another comes along the previous can no longer exist. And you must be the one to earn your keep." He explained coming to me. He looked down to Michael nudging his body with his foot, "Did you see how she killed him." He asked and I shook my head, "She's already becoming too strong." He rubbed his chin. "So now what? We have to do something." I protested and he gave me a smile. "We'll leave them alone for now." He caressed my face. "Are you serious? I spent all this time tracking her down killing nobodies just to get to her." I complained to him. He shushed me, "Well there is one more thing I want you to do." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a vial. I tried reaching for it but he moved it away shaking his finger. "She cannot know the truth." He insisted then handed me the vial. I quickly drank all of it as it warmed my throat and chest. I looked down to see the bleeding on my leg stopped and let out a sigh of relief. "It's about time you came around." I looked to him to see a look of disappointment on his face. "What?" I questioned then looked back down as my leg began to burn and itch. I fell to the floor in a panic trying to stop it only for it to began spreading. "There may have been a point where I thought you were truly special." He bent down to me and my entire body was now burning."Y-you said you wanted me." I shook cursing him. "It's just....you're not her." He placed his hand on my cheek and I was too in shock to scream. ~~~ Support a young writer ^-^ $Alexandrianalls
