Unknown POV:
I flicked my lighter but my hand was shivering too much to get a consistent flame. I could see my breath in a thick cloud and heavy snow began to fall around me. I gave up taking the cigarette out my mouth and looked around for a cab. It was probably around 3 am and the streets were almost empty as I began walking. I tucked my hands deeply in my coat trying to stay warm as the snowfall grew thicker. I desperately began searching for a ride then noticed bright lights coming down the road. I held my thumb out signaling them. They began slowing down and I sighed in relief. As they got closer I noticed it wasn't a cab but still approached bending down to the passenger window. They rolled it down gesturing for me to get in the back which I graciously obliged. I got in feeling the warm A/C his my skin and my body completely relaxed. "Thanks man. It's straight knives out there." I patted his shoulder. He didn't respond as he began driving off. "Just take me down 7th my apartment is a little ways out." I pulled out my phone checking the time.
We were driving for a while and and I could barely see out the window as the guy drove calmly. "Quite a night" he said and I saw him looking at me through the rear view. "So you from around here?" I tried to make conversation. "Something like that..." He responded innocuously. I then noticed a woman walking along the street kicking through snow. "Hey, hey someone's out there." I tapped him. "You sure?" He hesitantly questioned and I insisted. He slowed down approaching her and I rolled down my window. "Hey Miss, you can get a ride if you want. I'm going to 7th." I shouted as the cold stung my face. She turned surprise then gave a smile running to the door. "Seriously? Thank you so much." She quickly got in. "You don't mind right?" I asked the guy and he just nodded, "It's already a long night." He agreed. She sat in the passenger taking off her gloves and coat. "You guys are life savers. I know it's not good to get into cars with strangers but with that weather?" She laughed. I sat back as we began driving off again. "So why are you out so late?" I humored her to fill the awkwardness. "Ah I was hoping to get a bite. But didn't expect this storm to hit so hard." She fixed her hair in the mirror. "Kinda late for that isn't it? Most places are closed." She turned back to me giving a sultry smile, "You never know." She simply put it. The car grew silent and I looked out to see we had passed my street. "Hey you missed the turn back there." I explained looking back. "Oh don't worry my house is on 9th he can just circle back right?" She offered. "Yeah I'll just circle back." The guy stared through the mirror. I looked down at my phone to see it was almost 4 am and I tiredly rubbed my neck. "Mind if I turn the radio up?" She reached for the tuner and heavy music began to blare. She then turned to me asking a question but I couldn't hear her so I signaled for her to speak up. She spoke again and I still couldn't make it out. I glanced to see we passed 9th and grabbed the guy on the shoulder to tell him. I shook him but he didn't turn around keeping his eyes glued to the road. Out of nowhere the girl grabbed my arm lunging towards me. I at first thought he hit the breaks but then a warm sensation began to grow over my lap. I looked down and saw her fist pressed against my stomach. She unclenched it revealing a knife handle sticking out of me. I immediately went into shock processing what had just happened as she climbing to the back seat. I sunk back trying to grab the handle only for a sharp pain to run through my body. I let out a scream but the music muffled me. "Wh-why..." I felt myself growing weak as she leaned over me. I looked up at her and she had a plain almost peaceful look on her face. She came to my ear and whispered, "You should have just took your chances with the storm." She pulled out another knife raising it over my chest. My vision began to blur and I looked to the guy still driving like normal. I reached for my phone only for her to smack it out my hands digging her knee into my forearm. I began to slightly convulse as blood bubbled out my mouth. "What's wrong baby? You look tired." She deceitful spoke, "Maybe you should get some sleep." The last thing I saw was her c**k her hand back and then everything went dark.
"That storm came out of nowhere last night." I shook myself off at the door removing my jacket. I walked into the kitchen turning on the sink letting the warm water run over my hands. I then made my way up the stairs looking around. "Matthew?" I called out as I knocked on his door. There was no answer and I let myself in to see he wasn't there. I figured he was in the backyard and I went down to the back door. I moved the curtain looking out the window not wanting to go back out. I scanned across the yard and there was still no sign of him. I grew a little worried but didn't wanna stress so I settled into the living room. I turned on the TV flipping through channels stopping on the news.
"Police are starting an investigation into a suspicious homicide that took the life of an unknown man. He was found cut open in an unattended vehicle late last night. They are still looking for a positive ID." A woman spoke in front of police cars and an ambulance. I leaned in closer to see them carrying the man under a white sheet. My heart began to race slightly. "He appears to be in his late 30s. They department encourages those who might have any information to call at 923-555-6732." She closed out as the camera panned to to the body. I nervously tapped my leg as they zoomed in closer when his arm slipped off the gurney. I squinted me eyes then noticed a scar on the palm of his hand which made me widen them. Before I could process what I was seeing I felt a hand on my shoulder and I jumped turning around. "Hey it's just me." Matthew held his hands up. I sighed getting up, "Oh. I didn't hear you come in." I cleared my throat. He placed a large bag on the floor bending down opening it. "I went over to the neighbors to get some firewood. They think the storm will worsen later this week." He looked up to the TV reading the headline. They reiterated what happened and I reached for the remote turning it off. "Was that last night?" He questioned looking to me. I nodded still disturbed, "Well as long as it's out there in the city we have nothing to worry about right?" He placed some of the wood in the fireplace, "Right." I walked off getting a drink from the fridge. I took a sip as something outside caught my eye. I went to the kitchen window moving the curtain for a better view. I didn't see anything other than a few footsteps in the snow which I assumed was Matthew. I then felt his arms around my waist as he diverted my attention back to him. "As cold as it is. I know you'll love the snow and this time of year. Plenty of reasons to keep warm." He kissed my neck. "As long as you don't make me go out there. Or take me on some snow hiking trip." I turned around kissing him softly. His hands were still cold as he ran them over my back and I shivered. We quickly made our way back over to the fire laying down still caressing each other. "You know...if you ever aren't happy with things you can always tell me." He ran his thumb over my chin. "Why wouldn't I be happy?" I sat up and he shrugged, "I don't know. I just feel like things could be better for you. There's more to life than just this." He rambled on and I placed another kiss on his lip. "'This' is perfect." I smiled comforting him. He began peppering me with kisses pulling me back under him. As he began pulling my shirt over my head a loud thud could be heard followed by the lights shutting off. He let out a groan as the house was now completely dark.
I held a flashlight as Matthew tried to start the backup generator. "Looks like it was the whole town." I looked around to see complete darkness everywhere. "Don't worry it should start up any moment now." He continued to crank it desperately. I grew uneasy as the night howled along with the stone cold snow building up. Our lights eventually came back on and we quickly went back inside. The house was already freezing and I looked to the A/C to see it wasn't turning on. "Guess you can't have it all." I sighed taking my coat off. The fireplace was burning steadily and I sat on the couch tucking myself under a blanket. "I don't think this will last us for how ever long this storm will." He zipped himself up heading to the front door. "Are you sure you wanna go back out there?" I sat up worried. "The houses aren't that far apart, I'm sure the neighbor will have more wood. It should take 20 minutes tops." He left out the front door. I laid back down as I watched the fire crackle. The warmth encapsulated me and I felt myself growing tired. I rested my eyes briefly and eventually began dozing off. A few moments past I jolted awake noticing the lights were out again. I tiredly got up not knowing how long I was out. I placed my coat back on grabbing the flashlight. I looked down and noticed fresh snow on the ground and looked around suspiciously. I went out the back door to the generator and tried to crank it back on. Completely focused, I then heard movement in the snow. I shined my flashlight out seeing nothing but the snow and darkness. "Matthew? I called out thinking he was back. No one answered as a shuffling could be heard inside the house. I turned back looking in the doorway still seeing no one. I cranked the generator a few more times to no avail. My hands were sweaty yet cold and I couldn't hold the flashlight anymore. I came back inside helplessly rubbing my damp forehead shaking the snow off. I reached to close the door but a hand wrapped itself around my mouth yanking me back. I tried to scream as I was carried into the hallway flailing my arms. I was pushed against the walls and raised my flashlight in the person's face. It was Matthew who still had his hand on my mouth as he shushed me. He looked around fearfully as movement could be heard outside. He turned off the flashlight, and I looked down to see blood on his pants I stared at him shocked. He then moved his hand breathing heavily, "Someone killed the neighbor." He explained with a shaky voice. "I walked right into the middle of it. He fell on me as I opened the door. I-I don't think the guy saw me, it was too dark." I was speechless and now shaking myself. "The door." I mentioned as it was still wide open. Matthew tried to stop me but I quickly ran grabbing the handle closing it. I reached to lock the door when a sound of breaking glass followed by glass shards raining down blindsided me. A hand then grabbed my hair pulling it back in forth. I screamed out and Matthew grabbed me trying to free the grip. We tussled and I looked up and could see a masked man reaching in. I continued to pull as I locked eyes with him through his ski mask. He froze staring at me then the momentum of us pulling caused him to stabbed his arm on a shard of glass. He let go and we felt back onto the floor in a heap. I held my head in pain and the man was now long gone.
It was now morning and neither of us had gotten sleep. The police were looking around our house trying to find any evidence the guy may have left. "You said you went to your neighbors for wood and that's when you saw the man stab your neighbor?" They questioned Matthew. "Well yeah that's what I said." He exclaimed. He looked over to the fireplace then back to him. "Seems like you got enough already." He challenged. "Yeah I went back to get more-" "So you visited your neighbor earlier today? Then came back just in time to find the assailant there?"
Matthew grew baffled then crossed his arm, "What? You think I had something to do with this?" He defensively asked. The cop shrugged his shoulders, "It's just strange that's all." He then turned to me. I wrapped my cardigan around myself rubbing my still sore head as he stepped forward, "You said you were here when the generator went out and that you might have heard the guy the same time your boyfriend came home." He asked. I nodded then walked to the back door, "Matthew was behind me when they smashed window trying to get in." I pointed to the bloodied glass on the ground. He stared intently at the mess, "Would be pretty dumb to break into your own home wouldn't it?" He smirked at me. "Very." I said in a monotone voice. "You said he cut himself and that's what made him leave?" I averted my eyes agreeing. "Must have been a gnarly gash." He then placed his hands on his hips. "Look, I don't mean to seem harsh it's just that eye witnesses recalled seeing a man and woman fleeing a murder scene last night. And the department doesn't think this is a coincidence." He informed us. "That wasn't mentioned on the news." I grew concerned, "Well they think they might be targeting lone men late at night when the snow storms are at their worse. Harder to find traces of footsteps given the snowfall." He then walked up to Matthew giving him a card. "If you see or remember anything give us a call. And next time don't go walking out late at night by yourself especially in a storm like this. You're lucky she was here, that's probably what saved you." He patted him on the shoulder as the officers left.
Matthew sat, still glooming over the situation. He was visibly stressed and probably replaying to situation over and over. "I knew him for years." He moped and I could see his eyes swelling. I sat next to him taking his hand comfortingly. "And then the news this morning. Why is this happening?" He desperately sighed. My heart grew heavy as I thought back to the man with the scar and the victim on the news. He noticed my silence then leaned to me. I tried not look him in the eyes as he grabbed my face. His expression grew shallow and he leaned away, "You know something don't you?" He scoffed getting up. "No....well I don't know if I do..." I then felt my eyes swelling up. He began pacing, "When was it?" He asked running his hands through his hair. "Matthew you're still very upset." I tried changing the subject. "Tell me!" He shouted. I took a deep breath trying to stay calm. "I didn't remember at first. But back at the party. Someone did talk to me. He said he knew me but I swear I don't know who he is. He then gave me something and that's why I passed out." My voice shook heavily. Matthew then stopped with his jaw clenched, "Is that all?" He bent down in front of me, and my eyes grew heavier. "Back at the hospital, I saw him again. But I also helped this guy who hurt his hand. I was just trying to be nice. And that guy you saw on the news...was him." I wanted to shove my words back into my mouth as Matthew looked at me coldly. "All you had to do was tell me the moment you felt things were wrong." He scolded me. I sat in silence looking down at my hands, "I let you meet my family for christ's sake! I mean what if..." He grew louder. "God I can't believe trusted you all this time."
"I didn't think it would get this out of hand. It's not like I know exactly what's going on either." I shot back. "Oh but you knew enough to keep it from me? You expect me to believe that?" He didn't let up, "Well what do you expect? Most of the s**t I've done I can't explain. I'm sorry I didn't show up knowing any and everything." I stood up challenging him. He scoffed then mumbled under his breath, "Go on say it loud. I know what you're thinking anyway." I pressed him pushing his shoulder. "Oh yeah and what am I thinking?" He stared me up and down. I then turned leaving down the stairs, and he followed grabbing my arm. I tried pulling away but his grip was too tight as we stood at the top of the stairs. "Where are you gonna go?" He antagonized staring me down. "Does it matter? Better than here right? Not like you would believe me no matter what I say. " My words made him let me go and I went down grabbing my coat. I zipped myself up then reached into the pocket pulling out the vial. I contemplated throwing it out but noticed a tiny tube on the bezel. I assume it was decoration and as I twisted it a piece of paper popped it. I unrolled it to see writing and a number.
'If you ever need a little birdy'
Unknown POV:
"What do you mean it wasn't him???" Eva* angrily wrapped my arm up. "It was the f*****g neighbor. I thought I had the right address." I grunted pulling my mask off, "I almost had him. He even showed up but ran away as soon as he saw me. And then my arm..." I stood up kicking the chair to the ground. "At least she didn't cut you herself. Luckily she doesn't know what she can fully do." She packed up the first aid kit and I stared at her suspiciously. "How come you can't fix me up like you would before." I pried. She slowly turned to me looking offended, "Well maybe if you didn't screw up with the first guy and now this you wouldn't have to worry about that Michael*." She dismissively spat at me. I scoffed putting my jacket back on, "Sounds to me like you're losing your touch. Or maybe that guy you're always talking about finally took your powers." I chuckled prompted my her to aggressively grab me by the neck. I whimpered as she slammed me against the wall, "The only reason I'm keeping you alive is so I can save you for last after I kill that little b***h and her boy toy." She growled bearing her teeth. "You know you need me. Stop being cheeky." I weakly muttered and she dropped me to the ground. "The storm isn't gonna last that long. Tonight's are last chance before it blows over." She tucked a knife down her boot. "What's so special about him anyway. Why not just kill her. And get it over with." I questioned putting a knife under my belt. "You know you're so much prettier when you don't ask questions." She left out the front door.
