Four days after the mill, Cassian Moor came to the confluence settlement.
Not in secret — that wasn't his style. He arrived in the afternoon with two outriders and a traveling cart loaded with supplies he proceeded to donate to the settlement's stores with considerable public ceremony. He had the gift of making generosity look like a personal virtue rather than a transaction.
I watched from the doorway of the medical tent.
Yeva received him with the deliberate neutrality she maintained toward everyone who arrived with ulterior motives — which in her estimation was everyone. She had the particular skill of being simultaneously hospitable and utterly unreadable.
