The Night The Moon Turned Red
Lenora’s POV “Run, Lenora!” the child screamed but my feet were already sinking into blood and ash. The sound of crackling flames swallowed her voice. The great hall once golden and loud with feasts and laughter was now a furnace. Smoke pressed down from the rafters like a living thing, clawing into my throat. I could barely see her face through the soot. Her small hand clutched my tunic, fingers trembling, eyes too wide for someone who hadn’t yet seen ten winters. “Hold on, Mira,” I rasped. My arms ached, but I lifted her higher against my chest and ran. The corridor ahead was a tunnel of fire. Banners bearing the Ironbridge crest silver wolf on black silk burned like funeral torches. The smell was unbearable: smoke, blood, wet fur, and something else. Betrayal. A beam cracked above us and fell. I twisted, barely dodging it. The floor shuddered beneath my boots. “Mira,” I said, forcing calm into my voice, “you’re not going to die here. Do you hear me?” Her lips quivered. “Mama said the moon’s angry. That’s why it’s red.” I didn’t look up. I already knew what hung in the sky the blood moon, bleeding over our pack lands like a wound that wouldn’t close. It wasn’t the moon that was angry. It was fate. We reached the back door leading to the courtyard, the one Bramwell once used to sneak me out during Alpha banquets. My hand reached for the latch — and froze. Bootsteps. Heavy, deliberate. Too many. A line of armed soldiers stood outside, their armor glinting in the moonlight. Silver-edged spears. Crossbows loaded. Faces blank. And at their center — him. Bramwell. His eyes met mine through the haze. They were still that soft amber I used to love, but tonight they looked carved from stone. “Lenora,” he said. My name came out like a sigh he didn’t want to release. I didn’t answer. My heart was thudding too loud to let me think. “Move,” I whispered to Mira. “Hide behind me.” She didn’t move. She was shaking, silent tears streaking her ash-stained cheeks. “Bram,” I said finally, stepping forward. “Let us pass.” His jaw flexed. “You defied the Alpha’s rite.” I almost laughed a bitter, broken sound that scraped my throat raw. “You mean I refused to kneel while they slaughtered children?” “You don’t understand what you’ve done.” “I understand perfectly.” My voice shook, not from fear but fury. “You stood there and said nothing.” For a heartbeat, something cracked in his eyes. The Bramwell I knew was the one who used to trace constellations on my palm and whisper that I made him feel human flickered there. Then it was gone. “I can’t protect you this time,” he said softly. I smiled without humor. “You never did.” The soldiers shifted. The tension was suffocating all of us breathing the same smoke, the same guilt. “Step aside, Bram.” He didn’t. Instead, he gave the smallest nod. The archers raised their bows. I grabbed Mira and turned. A shaft of light flashed past us with a silver-tipped arrow slicing my sleeve open. Pain burned down my arm. Another arrow hit the wall inches from my head. “Lenora!” Mira screamed. We ran. The corridor twisted, half-collapsed, filled with heat and the screams of wolves dying in their human skin. I could hear the soldiers closing in boots striking, metal clinking. “Mira, stay low!” She tripped on debris, nearly fell. I caught her hand. We stumbled through what used to be the training hall, the floor slick with blood, bodies of men I once sparred with. Someone grabbed my arm from the shadows. I turned, ready to strike but it was Elder Varek. His face was half-burned, his eyes wild. “Lenora—” he coughed, spitting black. “You have to take the girl and run.” “I’m trying!” “They’re hunting anyone tied to the prophecy. The blood moon is their excuse.” “What prophecy?” He tried to answer but an arrow took him through the throat. He fell before he hit the floor. Mira’s scream tore through the smoke. I pulled her into my chest and ran again. My lungs burned. My vision blurred. Every corner looked the same flame and ruin. We burst through a side door into the courtyard. Cool air hit my face like a slap. I could finally breathe. The red moon glowed above, huge and merciless. For a moment, I thought we’d made it. Then “Stop her!” someone shouted. Hands seized me from behind. A soldier slammed me to my knees, wrenching Mira from my arms. She shrieked, her little fists pounding uselessly against his armor. “Don’t touch her!” I screamed. My voice echoed against the courtyard walls, swallowed by the chaos. Bramwell stepped through the archway. His sword hung loosely in his hand. “Please,” I said, breathless, my knees bleeding against the stone. “You know she’s innocent.” His eyes avoided mine. “Orders are orders.” “She’s just a child!” He flinched barely. Then he motioned. “Take the girl to the wagons.” Mira’s cries faded as they dragged her away. My world tilted. “Bram…” I whispered. “You’ll regret this.” His lips parted as if he wanted to say something, anything but he only raised his hand. The last thing I saw was his face turning away. A soldier struck me across the head with the blunt of his spear. Everything went dark except the smell. Smoke. Silver. And him. The scent of betrayal.
