Tola brought lamps and food and had the wisdom to leave us alone with the ledger and Vane Sorel, who sat in the corner and answered questions and drank three cups of tea and occasionally said, quietly: page forty-seven, or cross-reference the eastern holdings section. The one hundred and forty names were organized by territory and function. I recognized perhaps thirty of them — people the inquiry had identified, people connected to Harlan's eastern investigations, names that had appeared in Tola's previous intelligence work.
