On the night of my eighteenth birthday, at the Ash Harbor Pack's coming-of-age ceremony, I breathed in the crisp cedar scent of Ray and heard the sound of my destiny shattering.

The bonfire illuminated his handsome face as he stood on the high altar, holding Ivy’s hand. He didn't even spare me a single glance.

"Mia, an Omega is not worthy to stand beside me, let alone be the future Luna of Ash Harbor."

My inner wolf trembled in my chest, yet my body betrayed me, burning with an instinctual fever, dragged forward by his intoxicating scent.

But Ray left me with absolutely zero dignity.

"I, Ray Carlton, reject you, Mia Vale, as my fated mate and Luna."

When the violent backlash hit and blood spilled from my throat, the entire pack watched me like a pathetic joke.

Only Luke broke through the crowd. He dropped to one knee before me, gathering my broken body into his arms.

Ray’s crushing Alpha command instantly bore down on him, ordering him to let me go.

But Luke just looked up, his arms locked securely around me.

"She has already accepted your rejection. From this moment on, you have no right to touch her."

Chapter 1
Mia The bonfire at the center of the Ash Harbor Pack flared, casting dancing shadows over the faces of my pack members. It was my eighteenth birthday—the night of my coming-of-age ceremony. I should have felt excitement. Instead, my whole world was fracturing. It started with a scent. Crisp cedar, wet cobblestones after a heavy rain, and the clean, intoxicating heat of sweat. It crashed into my senses, hitting me so hard my knees almost buckled. My inner wolf, who had been dormant and quiet for years, suddenly clawed at my chest, howling a single, frantic word. Mate. My breath hitched. I followed the invisible pull of the bond, my eyes landing on the elevated stone altar. Ray. Ray Carlton, the future Alpha of Ash Harbor. The boy who had pulled me out of an icy river when I was thirteen and handed me his cloak. The boy I had secretly loved for five years. My heart hammered against my ribs, a wild, hopeful rhythm. But as my gaze met his, the hope died instantly, turning to ice in my veins. He was standing tall, dressed in a flawless black suit with the wolf-pelt cloak of an Alpha-in-training draped over his broad shoulders. Beside him stood Ivy, the blonde, high-ranking female who reeked of expensive cranberry perfume. Ray’s hand was wrapped securely around hers. He had smelled me, too. I saw the exact moment it hit him. His jaw clenched, and his dark eyes hardened. There was no surprise, no joy. Only disgust. He looked at me like I was a stain on the altar. I stood below him in a faded white dress I had borrowed from the healing house, the hem stained with herbal ash. There was a fresh, raw scrape on my wrist from hauling stones earlier that day. I was an Omega—the lowest of the low. My mother had died on a border patrol, and my father had been branded a traitor, his name scratched off the pack’s monument. I was the pack's punching bag, the girl who hauled water, cleaned training grounds, and stitched battle armor. An Omega is not worthy to stand beside him, the murmurs in the crowd seemed to whisper. Ivy let out a low, mocking laugh. She leaned closer to him, her voice dripping with poison. "Ray, is she really your fated mate? The Moon Goddess must be playing a sick joke." A few chuckles rippled through the front rows. My legs turned to jelly. My wolf whimpered, shrinking back into the darkest corner of my mind. Ray tightened his grip on Ivy’s hand, pulling her closer so that their shoulders brushed. It was a deliberate, calculated move. He didn't even look at me. "An Omega who sweeps the training dirt won't be my Luna," Ray’s voice carried over the crackling fire, cold and absolute. A strangled sound clawed its way up my throat. "Ray, please," I whispered, barely audible. "At least... not here." I shouldn't have begged. But the mate bond was brand new, raw and instinctual, driving my body to seek its other half even as he held a knife to the tether. Ray finally looked down at me, his gaze devoid of the warmth I thought I had seen five years ago. "You want me to handle this in private? So the rest of Ash Harbor can speculate that I actually accepted you?" Ivy smirked, casting her eyes down in faux pity. "Mia, you need to understand your place. Ray is going to be the Alpha. He needs a mate who can bring alliances and strength to the pack, not dead weight." I stared at the thick pelt on Ray’s shoulders, a sudden, sick realization washing over me. Just last night, he had stopped me by the training grounds to take a newly sharpened dagger from me. His fingers had brushed mine, and my skin had tingled with an electric shock. He had simply taken the blade and ordered me to deliver two extra buckets of water to Ivy’s room. He knew. He had smelled it then. He had planned this public humiliation. Ray raised his right hand, his palm facing the ground. The crushing weight of his Alpha aura slammed into me, forcing my chin up so I had to look at him. "Mia Vale. Stand up and listen carefully," he commanded. My knees trembled violently. I bit the inside of my cheek until the metallic taste of blood flooded my mouth, fighting the unbearable pressure. I refused to drop to my knees. I won't kneel while he breaks me. Ray’s brow furrowed, clearly annoyed by my resistance. He projected his voice so every wolf in the clearing could hear the execution of my soul. "I, Ray Carlton, reject you, Mia Vale, as my fated mate and future Luna." SNAP. The sound echoed in my skull. A visceral, agonizing tear ripped through my chest. It felt like someone had shoved a rusted blade between my ribs and violently twisted it, severing the soul-deep connection linking me to him. My vision tunneled, the edges bleeding into darkness, and the agonizing howl of my wolf shattered my eardrums. All strength abandoned my limbs. I choked, coughing up a mouthful of dark blood that splattered stark red against my white dress. The crowd stepped back. Some watched with morbid fascination, hungry to see the pathetic Omega writhe in the dirt from rejection backlash. But I refused to give them the satisfaction. I grabbed the rough stone edge of the altar, my knuckles turning white, and dragged myself upright. I locked eyes with Ray. He was paler than before. Rejection was a double-edged sword. He thought I would bear the brunt of it because of my rank, but his wolf had recognized me, too. He had just butchered his own mate bond. Sweat beaded at his temples, and his shoulders were rigid with suppressed pain, but he stubbornly maintained his arrogant Alpha posture. "Accept it, Mia," he gritted out. "Don't make me say it twice." "Just get it over with," Ivy whispered to him, wrinkling her nose. "She's making a scene." A broken, bloody smile stretched across my lips. It wasn't because the pain had stopped. It was because the fragile, stupid fantasy I had protected for five years had finally died. I wiped the blood from my chin with the back of my hand, my voice trembling but clear. "I, Mia Vale, accept your rejection, Ray Carlton." The second wave of agony was catastrophic. My wolf let out a final, abrupt cry before plunging into complete silence. The void she left behind was terrifying. My legs gave out. But before I hit the dirt, strong arms caught me. The scent of sharp pine needles, dark leather, and winter frost washed over me. It lacked the intoxicating pull of the mate bond, but the sheer, grounding stability of it helped steady my frantic heartbeat. I looked up through blurred vision. A black leather breastplate bearing the silver-grey crest of the Carlton family. Luke. Ray’s personal guard, and the most silent, lethal warrior in the pack. He knelt on one knee, holding me securely against his chest. On the altar, Ray clutched his chest, his eyes flashing a dangerous amber. "Luke! Step back." Luke didn’t move an inch. Ray released his Alpha command, dropping the heavy, suffocating pressure directly onto his guard. Around us, warriors and Betas sank to their knees, grinding their teeth against the force. But Luke? He only lowered his broad shoulders a fraction. His arms remained locked around me. Ray’s eyes blazed with a fury I had never seen before. "I ordered you to let her go." Luke slowly lifted his head, his dark eyes meeting the future Alpha's. "She was just rejected. If she stays here, the backlash will kill her." "That is her problem," Ray spat. The moment the words left his mouth, Ray jolted. He coughed, a thin stream of blood spilling over his bottom lip. He stared down at his own hands in absolute disbelief. Ivy shrieked, grabbing his arm to steady him. An elder at the front gasped, his face draining of color. "The rejection backlash... it's taking its toll on him." Ray glared at me, a twisted mix of pain and fury contorting his handsome features. I leaned against Luke’s solid chest. My skin was freezing, my limbs so numb I could barely twitch a finger. But I forced my chapped lips to move. "Luke..." I rasped. "Take me away." Luke looked down at me. There was no pity in his dark, stormy eyes. Only a simmering, quiet rage that had been buried for far too long. "Alright," he said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble.
