Sofia I awoke with a pounding headache. There was not one part of my body that didn’t ache. I took in my surroundings, this was not my room. I was lying on a huge kind size bed with silk black sheets. The floors were black and white marble, the room had huge windows on one wall, all draped with black curtains. A fire place was going with a small fire ablaze. This room was bigger than our entire cottage. Where was I? Where was Nick? I tried to move, but the pain struck me like a bolt of lightning. I winced. I couldn’t remember anything past those last few words with Nick. Maybe I had died. The utter thought somehow brought me peace. Just as I was convinced, the huge door to the room began to open. In walked a man I had never seen before. He was tall, and though he wore a suit, I knew he was built very well. His black hair glistened in what little sunlight the curtain allowed in the room. His eyes captivated me the minute I saw them. They were light blue, the most crystal clear blue I had ever seen. Something inside me begin to stir, I felt like a school girl who had her first crush. Who was this man? “How are you feeling?” He said, gentle but rather gruff. “Who are you? Where am I?” I said quietly, in hopes not to upset him. “I’m sure you have many questions, all will be answered. But right now, you need to rest. Your still injured and the priority right now is your recovery.” I looked at this man, hard. Did I know him? I was sure that I did, somehow. But I couldn’t have. “I will have Izabel bring you breakfast and a change of clothing. If you need anything she has been instructed to help you.” He began to walk away. “Where is Nick?” He stopped in his tracks. I could feel the anger resonating from his body. Oh no. What have I done? He walked up to me and looked me dead in the eyes. “Nick is no longer your problem, he will never hurt you again.” His eyes softened. “Rest now, we will talk later.” As I rolled over to process what his words meant, he left the room. A couple hours later, I woke to someone wrapping my wrist. I looked over and found an older woman carefully bandaging my arm. “Oh, Hi. I’m sorry if I woke you.” The woman smiled and I could see the kindness in her eyes. She was a short woman with beautiful hazel eyes and silver hair braided down her back. She wore a blue dress that reminded me of the fairy godmother from the story Cinderella. “I’m Izobel. Alpha Dolph told me to take care of you. I was just wrapping your wounds. I have breakfast in the kitchen if your hungry. Also, there are some clothes in the closet that I think may fit you.” I didn’t realize until that very moment, that I was starving. “I’m Sofia.” I whispered. “Well, Sofia, let’s get you up.” Izobel helped me up, she even helped me pick out a comfortable outfit and brought me down to the kitchen for breakfast. It was all so strange, having someone else cook breakfast. After I ate, I found the courage to ask Izobel some questions. “Izobel…” “Oh, please child, call me Izzy” “Izzy, where am I?” Izzy laughed, and then looked at me as if she had just noticed that I really didn’t know. “Well, honey, your at the Alpha’s house.” “Alpha?” Izzy’s lighthearted smile became concerned. “Yes, Alpha Dolph…of the MoonLake Pack?” “Pack? What do you mean? I’m so confused.” I began to sob. I didn’t understand anything she was saying. Izzy wrapped her arms around me and brought me close to her chest. “There, there… don’t cry, love. Your in the safest house in the world as far as I’m concerned. The Alpha is a good man, and he brought you here. So he must have had a good reason to do so. It’ll be okay.” Izzy helped me back up to my room. Where I waited patiently for Dolph’s return. He had a lot of explaining to do. The air is cold, the wind brisk- yet I am warm. I walk down the well beaten path through the tallest of trees. The moon above me is lighting my way as the stars create patterns in the clear sky. Snow falls softly on the forest floor all around me. I make my way to lake, leaves crunching beneath my body. I see the moon’s reflection, the stars… then I look down and see my own. I gasp as I wake up. My body was drenched in sweat. I wince in pain as I try to readjust myself in bed. The room was dark, except for the light coming from the bathroom. I had fallen asleep waiting for Dolph to return. “Are you okay?” A deep voice calls from the chair in the corner. I jumped from surprise. It was Dolph. He was sitting silently in the chair, the moonlight hit his face and I realized just how gorgeous this man was. He wore a black suit. His dark hair and piercing green eyes watched me with intent as I try to calm my breathing. “How long have you been there?” I said, trying to sound stronger than I was. “Not long, I came to talk to you… but you were asleep. What were you dreaming about?” My face turned red with embarrassment as I try to figure how he knew I was dreaming. “N-nothing.” “Tell me” He demanded. His voice captivated me. He was firm, but not aggressive. “I really don’t know… I’ve had the same dream since I was a kid. It never makes sense.” I looked down as the silk sheets, avoiding eye contact with Dolph. “That’s because it’s not your dream, it’s hers.” My eyes shot up and met his. “What are you talking about?” “It’s not your dream, Sofia. It’s your wolf” I held my breath. He couldn’t be serious. I had no wolf. I was no wolf. I came from two humans. My father wouldn’t even acknowledge any of the wolf packs. I only heard about their existence through my mother. Is that why Dolph brought me here? What would he do when he found out I wasn’t one of them? Suddenly everything Izzy said earlier made sense. “No, I’m sorry, I have no wolf. There’s been a mistake. If I had known that’s why I was here, I would have left. I didn’t mean to deceive you.” I felt fear creeping out from the depths of my soul. Wolves were known for their aggression. What had I gotten myself into… “Sofia, your scent is faint, but you are definitely a wolf. I could tell the moment I saw you. Your 22, right? You should have transitioned by now. Did you come from a pack?” “No-no, your not listening to me. My parents are human. My dads a drunk and my mom is dead. I came from no pack!” My strength took Dolph by surprise, he stood up and stiffened. “Sofia, you ARE a wolf-whether you like it or not. Tomorrow, we’re going to see Shilo. He’ll figure out what’s going on with your wolf.” I sighed in defeat. Fine. If he wanted to go see his wolf doctor to prove I’m human, I’d go. When he found out I was telling the truth, maybe he’d just let me leave peacefully. But then where would I go? I had no one. I laid awake all night, staring out the windows at the moon. Two days ago, I was in a run down shack being beaten by Nick. Now, I’m in a mansion in the middle of nowhere and told I’m a wolf. Oh, what irony. Dolph “So she doesn’t know she’s wolf?” Henry asked in disbelief. I can tell he’s just as confused as I am. Wolves are very different from humans. We heal quicker, run faster, and have abilities that no human could ever possess. It seemed unlikely that Sofia could not know, but I could tell by her response tonight that she had no idea. “No clue. She just kept saying there was a mistake. Her scent is faint, maybe there’s something wrong.” I run my hands through my hair. It had been a long day. I could hardly get any work done without thinking about her. I lied when she asked how long I had been there. It must have been hours that I sat there and watched her sleep. She was beautiful and driving my wolf to complete madness. She is our mate, you must tell her. I couldn’t tell her, she didn’t even believe she was wolf. What the hell was I supposed to do? “You’ve got to figure it out so you can complete the bond, man. This is huge for you.” Henry was right. When an Alpha found his mate, his strength and abilities doubled, making him a stronger leader. What if she doesn’t want anything to do with me? I shuttered at the idea of losing my destined mate. “I’m gonna take her to Shilo.” “Good idea, he’ll know what to do.” Shilo was our pack medicine man. He was gifted with healing from birth. He was odd, but there wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix. Hopefully, Sofia wasn’t the exception.
