Sofia
I held myself up on the bathroom sink as I did my best to clean the blood from my nose and lip. My eyes were slowly swelling, and fresh purple bruises were forming on my collar bone. I looked at my reflection in the mirror. Who was this person looking back at me? Why did she put up with this? I used to be strong, there was a fire inside of me that kept me going. But, eventually the hell fire around me became so great that nothing remained inside me.
I can hear Nick in the next room getting ready for work. I already had breakfast made this morning and planned on doing my best to stay out of his way.
“I know man, I’ll get the money. I told you; I’ll have my inheritance soon and I’ll be able to pay you back twice what you’re owed. You just have to give me time…” I hear his voice trail off as he slams the bathroom door. I hold my breath for a moment, praying that he didn’t know I was listening to his conversation. After I hear the toilet flush, I breathe and make my way into the kitchen to fix his plate before he arrived. Who was he on the phone with? Why did he owe them money? The possibilities were endless really. Nick was a gambler, an addict, and everything between. I never knew his life outside of the walls of our home. We never spoke about anything other than a baby or my mistakes. So it was untelling what trouble he had gotten himself in now.
“SOFIA”, Nick bellows from the bathroom.
I scurry across the hardwood floor to see him shaving his beard at the sink.
“Where’s that diamond ring?”
He words stopped me in my tracks. He was talking about my mother’s ring. She gave it to me when I was 10, it’s the only thing I had of hers.
“What do you mean? What ring?”, I lied.
“Don’t play stupid with me, Sofia. Where’s the f*****g ring?”
“Nick, that’s momma’s.”
“Sofia, she’s f*****g dead, get over it… We have real problems. Now go get it.”
I quietly went in the bedroom and retrieved the ring from our top dresser drawer. It was so beautiful. My mother use to tell me the cut the diamond from a secret lake and that’s why it was so clear. I smile as I reminisce the few memories I have with momma. I hold on to my heirloom for a moment longer until I finally hand it over to Nick. He throws it in his pocket, like it was nothing. I wasn’t sure why I was so surprised. Nick threw everything around like it was nothing, including me.
“ What are you going to do with it?” I whimpered as he walked down the hallway.
I was answered only by the slamming of the door.
I spent the entire day wondering what Nick meant when he said we were in trouble. He seemed anxious, he hadn’t even screamed at her the way he normally would in the mornings. Something was definitely occupying his mind. What had he done?
Nick arrived home around 6 that night. I could tell he had been drinking again, but he was quiet. He walked in and sat on the couch, completely oblivious to my presence. I did my best to stay out of his way the rest of the evening. As I was making my way to bed, he stopped me. His eyes gleaming with hate.
“You’re weak, you know that. I mean how pathetic of a woman do you have to be to not even be able carry a child.”
I felt my face burning as tears began to pour from my eyes.
“Why are you crying, I mean this is all your fault. If you would have had a f*****g baby by now, we would be fine. Everything would be f*****g fine!”, He screamed as he put a whole in the drywall above my head.
I closed my eyes and begged God to just let him kill me. I was done, he was right, I was weak.
“Why can’t you just do the one f*****g thing I needed you for?”
Before I could think, I screamed, “Because you’re f*****g evil and I would rather die than have a child with a monster.”
He recoiled and paused for a split second before grabbing me by my throat.
I slowly began to lose consciousness.
This is it. This is death. This is peace.
Just before my world went black, I heard the front door crash open.
Dolph
“Nick, Time to pay up.” I hear Henry yell from inside the small cottage he had just busted into.
He preferred to make a scene in everything he did. Even when we were just paying a courtesy call to scum like Nick Foster, who owed my father’s casino around 20,000. I don’t make house calls, that’s the Beta’s job. I just tagged along to get out of the house. Alpha responsibilities could be rather boring at times and I needed a little excitement.
As I walk into the small cottage, a smell hits me. Wolf. But it wasn’t Henry’s scent. It made my heart stop and my own wolf howled. I couldn’t even breathe.
What the f**k is going on
“Nick, We’ve been real patient with you, man. But the boss doesn’t take too good to waiting. Now you said you’d have the money a month ago. Where is it?”
Nick Foster looked exactly how he acted, like a punk. His hair was slicked back with gel, and his flannel shirt told me that he acted like a bigger man than he really was. As Henry threw Nick down the hall, I caught a glimpse of something in the hallway.
“Who is she?” I say, my voice calm but demanding.
It was her, she was a wolf, and the scent coming from her was driving my wolf crazy. Nobody had ever had this effect on me. I walked up to her, and slowly slid her auburn hair back to reveal her face.
Rage filled my body from the inside out, fresh bruises covered her face. This guy really did a number on her. I wanted to kill him myself, but I couldn’t take my eyes off the woman I held in my arms. I looked up at henry and nodded. He already knew and with one quick motion, Nick Foster was no more.
As I picked up the girl and took her out to my jeep, my wolf was still going crazy. I wasn’t even sure if she was alive. Her body was light and frail. Bruises covered nearly ever visible part of her skin. I laid her in the backseat.
“Just breathe, move, do something.”, I begged her.
she gasped for air and in that moment, my entire world started spinning.
My wolf howled within me, My mate.
