Chapter 1
I'm running as fast as I can, I may be fast but these wolves are faster. It's nighttime, the night of the full moon and I'm running from the people I used to call my family, a pack, people I thought would defend me till the end. Now I'm enemy number one and I'm running for my dear life before I get torn into shreds. I don't stop, I don't turn around. I'm running forward hoping they're the ones that get tired and I find a way to get out of this place, I hope I find a way to leave Europe at least. I trip on a log and I fall, the wolves are now around me they're gritting their teeth ready to tear me apart. I beg them not to do it, but there's no use. The Alpha, my dad charges at me, and I scream until I wake up. I'm safely on my bed breathing heavily, I'm all sweaty and my heart is beating really fast, my hands are shaking and I'm a little bit scared. That dream felt so real, that has to be the scariest dream I've ever had. My dad trying to kill me, yes he's scary but not to the point of wanting to kill me. The bright sun illuminates my room, it's morning. 7:30am, which means it's my birthday. I'm eighteen now. Which also means I'm going to become the alpha tonight, and becoming an alpha means I'm going to find my mate. My thoughts are interrupted by my door being swung open. My mom is in my room with a birthday cake singing a happy birthday song to me, it makes me cringe but smile at the same time. My mom always does this every year, my dad never joins her. He's the alpha so him singing happy birthday would be more cringe than my mom singing it. He only has to wish me a happy birthday. Sometimes he doesn't even wish me a happy birthday even though he knows it's my birthday. It's not like he doesn't love me, he's the alpha and these alphas act like showing emotion will make you weak. I know it's gonna be hard, but when I become alpha to the younger pack I'm going to make sure they express their feelings. My dad and the pack might not like it but then again if I'm gonna be the alpha then I have to stand up to these weird norms. Enough is enough of this shyness and timidness. "Well, make a wish." My mom says, a smile on her face. It's like it's her birthday and not mine. "Mom, I'm eighteen don't you think me blowing fire off of candles is a bit childish?" I wouldn't have said that if my wishes had come through in the past, but they never did so what's the point? "Honey, you may feel like an adult but you'll always be my sweet baby." She pouts her lips and talks in a weird tone, she thinks I'm still a baby. I roll my eyes then I look at her, she's beaming. She really wants me to do this, does she? My mom is so beautiful, her hair is pitch black like mine, her eyes are bright green and her cheekbones make her look more beautiful. I get my black hair from my mom and my brown eyes from my dad. The power couple of the pack. They hardly fight, and they argue in a civilized way. I can't imagine my parents getting a divorce, I don't even know if divorce is a thing in our community. I give in to her puppy dog eyes and I blow out the candles. I know I don't believe in wishes but I still make a wish, I wish for this night to be perfect and I hope my dad doesn't fight me for the little reforms I'm about to enforce, and I also wish to meet my mate this night and I wish to be confident when I approach her. "Oh, my baby's all grown up." She puts her hand on my cheek. "You're going to be alpha to the youth pack, and you're going to find your mate and you two are gonna be in love just like me and your dad." I do hope I find love the way my parents did. But what if I find her? What if things go wrong tonight? I don't ask her that because I know she'll get pissed off. Positive vibes only. She always says. And I agree with her but I also can't help but feel like something bad is going to happen. "Alright, I'll take this cake downstairs and I and your dad will wait for you while you freshen up." She smiles then leaves the room and shuts the door, I sigh and I jump out of bed to shower. But first I look out the window, the fresh morning breeze greets me with its cool embrace, and it's almost like the birds are singing because of my presence. People are awake and they've already started preparing for tonight. Mr. Dwight is chopping wood for the bonfire and the kids are doing dance rehearsals. All this because of me and the ceremony. The ceremony is nothing big or frightening, it's what comes after that scares me a little bit. I shrug the fear off because I'm eighteen now, I'm an adult and things shouldn't scare me this much anymore. After I shower I put on my white t-shirt, black pants, and flip-flops. I put my moonlight pendant around my neck, the one my Grandfather gave me before he passed, my Grandfather is surprisingly less strict than my dad, I guess it shouldn't be a surprise, my dad is fearless and he has been fearless since he was a little kid. I'm eighteen and I'm just working on my timidness. Father and son can be different but not too different when it comes to being the Alpha's son. When it comes to being the alpha you and your father have to show equal leadership and strength. I leave my room and I head downstairs to meet my parents eating breakfast in the dining room. I don't know why but we werewolves have a vast appetite for food. We love food so much. Right now there are different kinds of things to eat on the table, but it's light because it's supposed to be breakfast. I may be nervous about tonight but it'll never stop me from eating. "Good morning, Dad," I say quietly, it's not that I'm scared of him I just don't want to say the wrong thing. "Ah, there's the birthday boy." He says, there's no excitement in his voice. He's casual as always. "Everyone's getting ready for the ceremony tonight, people are counting on you, especially the youth." I highly doubt everyone's counting on me. Jeff and his gang think it's atrocious that I'm going to be the one to lead them. Me, Michael Sherman. The boy who has nerds for friends. Their words, not mine. "I'm sure he's going to be an amazing alpha," Mom says as she eats a piece of bread. I'm eating as well. I have to get my strength up for tonight, I'm also going to be eating a lot in the afternoon. I'm also going to be hanging out with my nerdy friends. Zeke and Cal. I've been friends with them since we were pups. They might be nerds but I'd rather hang out with them than hang out with Jeff and his jerk-ass friends. After breakfast I walk out of the house, everyone's busy except for the pixies who are laughing and floating in the air because they have nothing to worry about.
