Chapter 1: "The Contract"
The hospital smelled like disinfectant and debt.
Aria Cole stared at the paper in her hands until the numbers blurred.
`TOTAL DUE: $487,320.00`
`SURGERY DEADLINE: 48 HOURS`
“Mom’s tumor is growing,” the doctor had said an hour ago. “Without surgery, we’re looking at weeks.”
Weeks.
She had $3,200 in her bank account. Rent was due tomorrow.
Her phone buzzed. Landlord.
She ignored it.
Aria walked out of St. Mary’s Hospital into the cold Tembisa night. The streetlights buzzed. Her shoes had a hole in them. She was 24 and completely out of options.
That’s when the black Maybach pulled up.
The window rolled down.
The man inside didn’t look human. He looked carved. Sharp jaw. Ice-cold gray eyes. Suit that cost more than her yearly salary.
“Ms. Cole,” he said. His voice was low. Bored. “Get in.”
Aria took a step back. “Who are you?”
“Damian Hale.”
He said it like it should mean something.
And it did. Hale Group. The richest man in the country. CEO. The guy on every business magazine cover.
“What do you want?”
He held up a folder. “Your mother. St. Mary’s. Room 412. Tumor. Stage 3.”
Aria’s blood went cold. “How do you—”
“I know everything.” He cut her off. “I also know you have 48 hours before the hospital kicks her out.”
Aria hugged the bill to her chest. “Are you here to gloat?”
“No.” Damian got out of the car. He was tall. Too tall. He towered over her. “I’m here to make a deal.”
He opened the passenger door. “Get in. We’ll talk.”
She shouldn’t. Every horror story started like this.
But her mom was dying.
Aria got in.
The car smelled like leather and money. Damian didn’t look at her. He pressed a button and a screen came down between them and the driver.
He slid the folder across the seat.
Inside: photos of her. Her apartment. Her mom. Her bank statements.
A marriage certificate. Already filled out.
Aria’s hands shook. “What is this?”
“A business proposal.” Damian finally looked at her. His eyes were empty. “Marry me for one year. Play the role of my wife. Attend events. Shut my family up. In return, I pay your mother’s medical bills. $5 million. Full coverage.”
Aria laughed. It came out broken. “You want me to marry you?”
“I want a wife on paper.” He leaned back. “No love. No s*x. No complications. One year. Then divorce. Clean break.”
“Why me? You could have any—”
“Because you’re desperate,” he said bluntly. “Desperate people don’t ask questions. And you won’t fall in love with me.”
The words hit like a slap.
Aria looked down at the contract. Clause after clause.
No dating. No public scandals. Live in my house.
Breach of contract = you owe me everything back.
Her phone buzzed again. Hospital.
_Reminder: Payment due in 47 hours 12 minutes._
She closed her eyes.
Mom’s voice from this morning: _“Baby, don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine.”_
She wasn’t fine.
Aria picked up the pen on the seat.
Damian watched her. No emotion. Like he was buying stocks.
Her signature was shaky. `Aria Cole`
She slid the paper back. “Happy?”
Damian took it. Flipped through it once. Then he pulled out his phone.
Two minutes later, her phone buzzed.
`Deposit: $5,000,000.00 from HALE MEDICAL TRUST`
Aria stared at the screen. Her breath caught.
It was real.
Damian put the contract in his briefcase. “Good. Wedding is Saturday. Private. My lawyer will send details.”
“Wait—Saturday? That’s in 3 days!”
“You need the money now. I need a wife now.” He opened the door. “Driver will take you home. Pack a bag. You move into my penthouse tomorrow.”
Aria got out on shaky legs. “This is insane.”
Damian was already back in the car. He rolled the window down one last time.
He looked at her. Really looked at her. For one second, the ice cracked.
“Don’t fall in love with me, Mrs. Hale,” he said.
“This is business.”
The window rolled up. The Maybach drove away.
Aria stood on the sidewalk, holding a contract that just sold her life for $5 million.
Her phone buzzed.
Hospital: _Payment received. Surgery scheduled._
She should’ve felt relief.
Instead, she felt trapped.
Because the way Damian Hale said her new last name...
Like he already owned her.
