Chapter 2

We stop as some large metal gates slowly open and we start driving up a long driveway. Is this place a palace? It was huge, there was a large house at the top of the hill, lots of houses and outbuildings dotted around it, vast fields and forests covering the surrounding area. Maggie took a smaller path I hadn’t noticed to the left half way up the drive; ‘this is it’ she said, smiling. We both get out. It was beautiful, the cabin was nestled in the trees, a large decking looked to surround the house, a cosy swing swaying gently in the breeze. I followed Maggie inside. It felt like home. A small fireplace in the corner, soft furnishings in dark red and orange, the smell of the trees and the wood of the cabin mixed together. ‘It’s too much, I can just go and find a motel’ I stuttered. ‘Nonsense, my son is away on a trip just now, I know he wouldn’t mind, stay as long as you like’ I follow her upstairs to a large bedroom. ‘It has the best bathroom in the house, the bath is big enough to wash away anyone's aches. I should know I helped design it’ she smirks at me. ‘Make yourself comfortable, get a good night's sleep, if you need anything, we’re at the main house, you’re welcome anytime, someone is always around, and, if you’re up for it, tomorrow I can give you a tour and introduce you to the rest of the family.’ She smiled at me softly, and started to head out. ‘Thank you’ I said suddenly, almost shouting, ‘I just, I’ve never.’ Maggie gave me a quick embrace, put her hand on the side of my face lovingly, the way a mother would a child and left. I stood there in silence, not sure what to do, what was happening, was this real? Was it possible people could be kind and not want anything in return or was I setting myself up for something much worse? I decided for one night I was just going to enjoy it. Maggie mentioned a bath, that I was definitely going to enjoy. I started to run the bath. Maggie was right, this was like no bathroom I had ever seen, bright and large, a shower that looked like it belonged in some fancy hotel and a tub that looked bigger than me. I sank into the water, the heat instantly helping my aching limbs, my cuts and scraps. I stayed in the bath until the water was almost cold. I grabbed a towel and wrapped myself up. I was suddenly so tired I felt like I couldn’t move. I grabbed one of my shirts, too tired to rummage for anything more, and fell into bed. I’d never felt anything so soft. I don’t even remember falling asleep. I don’t know how long I’d been asleep for. I started to stir, confused, I felt like someone was here, it was pitch black, it must have been a dream. I turned over in the bed and felt someone next to me. I screamed. ‘F**k’ I heard in a deep gruff voice. I spun to get off the bed and fell out, hitting my ass on the floor, hard. I try to look for something to grab to protect myself with. I feel the lamp on the nightstand and hold it up. I can’t see anything, it’s so dark and I don’t know where the light switch is. Suddenly the other lamp comes on, standing in front of me was a man, tall, must be 6.4” or more, shaggy dark black hair, longer than it looks like it should be, every inch of him chiselled like a Greek god, biceps bulging, in nothing more than tight boxers, staring at me with piercing blue eyes. A blue like I’ve never seen. Our eyes locked from across the room. ‘Mine’ he said, a flash of something flickered across his eyes as he spoke, it was too fast for me to catch. ‘Mine’ I growled. I drop the lamp, throw my hands over my mouth. I have no idea where that came from, it wasn’t my voice but it was my mouth that said it. ‘I…I… I…. I’m sorry’ I stutter, I don’t even know why I’m apologising, ‘Maggie……said it was OK……I didn’t know’ ‘I should go’. I go to grab my bag, sprint for the door. ‘Wait’ he says, ‘just hold on,’ I stop, I don’t know why, I’ve woken in the middle of the night to a strange man lying in bed next to me, practically naked. I should be running out the door, so why can’t I leave? Why don’t I really want to leave?’ He stands straight. I hadn’t even noticed he’d been crouching this whole time, like he was prepared to attack. He looks even bigger when he’s standing. I also can’t help but notice how strong he looks, how tight his boxers are. I can’t help but drink him in. I blush as I notice him watching me. He must have seen me staring. I need to break the silence and I start rambling.‘I met Maggie; she offered me a place to crash, said it was empty just now, her son, I’m sorry, I can leave, I didn’t mean to…’ ‘I came home early’ he says, ‘I didn’t tell anyone I was heading back’ ‘first time I’ve been kicked out of my own bed’ he smirks. ‘You’re Maggie’s son?’ Oh well, at least he’s not a complete stranger, he just owns the house and the bed I just so happen to be sleeping in uninvited. ‘Nate’ ‘Lexi’ We stand in silence, the air humming with electricity, something inside me was raging. I couldn’t explain it, staring at him, it felt like there was something inside me trying desperately to crawl out. ‘Mine’ ‘mine’ ‘Mine,’ It’s all I can hear; over and over, I don’t know where it’s coming from or what it means. I’m suddenly very aware I’m wearing nothing but a T-shirt, I must look mad having fallen asleep with wet hair, dazed and confused, exhausted from days of lack of sleep. A lifetime really of no sleep. What must he think of this crazed woman standing in his room, in his home, sleeping in his bed? I start to leave… ‘Wait’ he says, he seems calmer now; composed. ‘Sleep here, there’s plenty of room, I’ll crash next door’. With that, he walked out the room. What the hell just happened? Do I leave? Go back to bed? Go after him? It’s his room after all, his house. I got back into bed. I doubt I’ll sleep, but I don’t know what else to do and I feel like I need time or space from the God before I make a decision. I’m trapped, I’m behind bars, in a cage, I’m screaming, begging, someone hear me, someone help me, it’s me, but it’s not me, I’m thrashing, I need release, please, I beg….. suddenly it all goes black, I feel a wash of calm come over me, I’m safe, he’s here, we’ll protect you
