Chapter 3

1004 Words
****Nate**** It had been a long journey home after a long trip away, I’d been driving for hours, I was exhausted and couldn’t think of anything better than collapsing in bed and sleeping for days. I don’t know what time I finally made it home. I hadn’t told mom or dad I was heading back early, they would only have waited up and I knew I’d be back late and part of me just wanted the peace for a few hours to sleep without anyone needing anything from me. I open the door to my cabin, kick off my boots, I don’t bother turning the lights on, it’s not like I really need them to see where I’m going anyway, I just drag myself upstairs, too tired to move my legs. I take off my jeans and throw my top over in the corner and crawl into bed. I fall asleep before my head even hits the pillow. I’m woken by a scream and movement at the side of me. I spring out of bed, ready to attack and protect ‘What was that?’ Alex snaps. ‘Like I know! I was asleep too’ annoyed my wolf was asking such a stupid question. That’s when I see her, cowering on the other side of the bed, she clearly can’t see me. I watch her as she grabs the bedside lamp for a weapon, the sight would have almost been comical if she hadn’t scared the crap out of me. I switch the bedside lamp on, Alex roars at me ‘MATE,’ before I have chance to think. ‘Mine’ I growl. She growls back at me ‘Mine’, then looks afraid of herself and covers her mouth. Why does she look so afraid? Is it because she doesn’t want a mate? The thought of being rejected by mate so suddenly makes my heart ache. Alex is just as confused as I am, ‘why is mate claiming us but not claiming us?’ ‘I don’t know, something must be up?’ I realise I am standing ready to shift. Maybe I startled her. I stand up straight to show her we mean no harm. I see her eyes wondering over me, Alex puffs out his chest, proud that mate clearly likes us, she looks away quickly, her cheeks growing red. I have to hold back a grin, but I can’t deny I’m trying not to be turned on by her reaction. Even though she looks startled by herself right now, I can’t help but want to rush over and take her. She’s beautiful, she’s mine. She has long dark brown hair, stunning green eyes I can’t stop looking at, she’s only small, about 5’4, curves to die for and a chest I can’t wait to get my hands and mouth on. ‘Then what are we waiting for?’ Alex impatiently growls, ‘she’s Mate, we need her, now, it’s been so long.’ ‘Down boy! We could at least find out her name first!’, she starts stuttering, tripping over her words as she’s talking, her innocence and shyness is only making my c**k ache more to see if she’s like that when my hands are on her. I see her eyeing me suspiciously as we stand there in silence. I need to re-group, get my head together. I’m too tired and seeing her standing by my bed in nothing but that shirt and sleepy look is driving me wild. I can’t think. She starts to leave and I panic, ‘wait!’ Alex and I both shout in unison ‘She can’t leave us Nate! Keep her near, we can’t lose her now she’s finally here’ ‘Sleep here, there’s plenty of room. I’ll crash next door’ and with that I left as quickly as my legs could carry me without looking at her. ‘Coward’ Alex mutters. ‘Shut up, you’re not helping’. I go downstairs, I need to put some space between us to clear my head, I can feel the pull, the need to be near her through the closed door. I go to the fridge to grab a beer and down it in one. ‘You don’t need beer, what you need is to climb back into the bed next to mate and mark her.’ ‘Considering how she reacted when she called out Mate and how she was tripping over her words I think we need to be a little more tactile going about this, we don’t want to scare her away’. I could sense Alex was p****d about this idea but he also didn’t say anything back, he knew I was right. I can hear Lexi moaning upstairs, she sounds upset. ‘She needs us, go to her’. I walk upstairs and peak inside the room, I don’t want to scare her, or her think I’m creeping on her, I just need to make sure she’s ok. She’s asleep, she must be having a nightmare, her face is contorted in pain. She’s whimpering, ‘no, please, help, anyone’, she cries in her sleep. ‘Mate needs us, help her’. I walk over to her. I didn’t want to wake her but how do I help? ‘Soothe her, touch her, let her know we’re here, we’ll protect her’. I hold her hand, gently, so as not to wake her, stroke the hair off her face, she visibly relaxes, her body calms, she drifts off into a deep sleep. ‘See, she needs us’, Alex announced almost smugly. I just rolled my eyes. I don’t know how long we sat there. I just want to make sure she no longer seems scared before I leave her to sleep and go back downstairs. There’s no way I’m going to be able to sleep now. I throw myself on the sofa, my mind racing. Who is this girl? When did she get here? She mentioned my mom. I’ll have to speak to her at some point, find out as much as I can.
