"Yes maybe
You could understand
I don't know, how to express myself well
And yes maybe
I could make you see"
Camila was singing in her nook in the closet. She didn't want to talk about what happened and she wouldn't let me distract her.
"Yes maybe
I will make you happy
Yes maybe
I could tell you"
Her song was sadder than the one she sang to me before. I don't know why she wanted to set up Miguel and Jennifer so badly when it was obviously hurting her. I went to go take a shower and grab something to eat before heading to bed. I walked back into my room and she was standing in the middle of the room.
"Hey,"
"I'm sorry," she sobbed.
"It's okay," I said softly. "I just want to make sure your okay."
"Yeah, I'm fine," she said wiping away her tears.
"I don't know how it is possible but I still don't like seeing you cry," Camila smiled and let out a small laugh.
"I wish you would tell me," I looked into her eyes almost pleading to her to tell me.
"It's complicated but I guess I can tell you the story from the beginning and go from there," I led her to the bed and we both sat down. "So, you know we grew up together, and well Miguel was always sort of like a big brother to me but I had a crush on him since I can remember. He was so nice to me and caring, I couldn't help but fall in love with him. Well, we spent so much time together and during my freshman year I was so sure he would ask me out but he never did. I waited and waited but I couldn't wait any longer. So during last year's October Festival, I decided to let him know who I felt and we became a couple." The look in her eyes told me she was leaving things out but I was just happy she was starting to open up so I didn't say anything.
"Miguel treated me so well but I-," she began to choke up.
"It's okay, take your time," I told her.
"He promised me, he promised me," she cried. "He broke his promise." I held her in my arms but I wish I could actually feel her and she could feel me.
"How about we go out on a date, I mean a night out just you and me," I don't know what the hell I was saying but I wanted to spend more time with her and get her mind off of her past.
"When?" she asked.
"Next weekend," I told her.
"Okay," she smiled. We still had
I was looking forward to our date but I had to face the entire school week first. The next day, as I walked the halls of the school most kids were talking about the festival and more accurately Miguel and Jennifer's argument.
"Hey Ethan," Marco called.
"Hey man," I said back.
"So how was your first school event," he said.
"Interesting, I guess," I replied.
"I'll say," Thomas added. "Get ready, the winter musical is up next and it is always a knockout."
"Seriously," Marco said. "Shut up."
"Dude, not cool," Bill added. I looked over to Camila and her face was paler than usual.
"What happened?" I questioned.
"Nothing," Marco said.
"I know it's not nothing," I said but I was really talking to Camila.
"Dude, why do you always look away when you talk," Marco said.
"Do you see ghosts," Bill said.
"No," I said harshly. Camila was smiling though.
"It's, do you see dead people," Marco joked.
"Whatever," Bill said as he rolled his eyes. We all walked to our next class together and as soon as we passed the sign-up sheet for the musical Marco stopped.
"Damn, no one wants to sign up," he said.
"Guess not," Thomas remarked.
"Oh no," Camila said with so much concern in her voice.
"Well, guess it isn't such a knockout as you guys said," I joked but no one laughed at my joke.
"Do you ever just mind your own business, new kid" Miguel said as he walked up behind us. Miguel pushed me out of the way but before I could push him back Marco spoke.
"You're signing up?"
"Yeah, anyone of you have a problem with that?" Miguel said. No one answered him but looking over at Camila she did seem happy about it. Other kids walking the halls stopped and stared at him signing his name on the piece of paper.
"Thank you Miguel," she whispered. I wondered why she whispered. "Maybe you should sign up too."
"Nope," I answered Camila.
"No what?" Marco said.
"Nothing," I said quickly.
"Stay out of my way new kid," Miguel said as he pushed me again but this time I shoved him back.
"Well, don't see how I can do that," I grabbed the pen next to the sign-up sheet and signed my name.
"Seriously," Miguel huffed.
"Yep," I smirked.
"Yay!" Camila cheered.
"Dude, why did you do that," Marco asked.
"To piss him off," I said truthfully. Camila tried to slap my arm but I obviously didn't feel a thing. I shrugged my shoulders and the guys looked at me funny.
"Let's go to class," I told them.
After school, Camila told me all about the winter musical. Apparently, it was one she helped write music for. She was the lead last year and I guessed that's why no one wanted to signup. Either they were being respectful or they were being chickens. I guessed they were all a bunch of chickens but Camila told me to stop being so mean. Camila told me she would help me by teaching me the songs and the lines but I clarified that I would help with the musical but I would not be in it. She sighed and begged me to audition but I would not change my mind. She was still happy though. She spent the entire night singing her character's main song.
"Here I am
And so are you
Even if it's just in my imagination"
