October Festival was tomorrow night and I was kind of nervous. I didn't really do this type of stuff. I would rather stay home away from people but I had to join the festivities.
"Are you excited about tomorrow?" Camila asked.
"Yep," I said emotionless.
"Come on, it will be fun. There are tons of food and games," Camila noted.
"I'm not a child," I said sarcastically.
"You will have fun, watch," she smirked. I got on my side of the bed and watched as Camila got on her side. I can't deny this was nice. It was a nice feeling to have her near me. As I snuggled up as close as I could to her. I whispered in her ear, "can I keep you." She stayed quiet but I know she heard me because I felt her fidget against me.
"I-," I knew I freaked her out.
"I saw it in a movie," I joked.
"Oh," she tried to laugh but I knew she was nervous.
"I do wish I could touch you," I said.
"What do you feel when I put my hand on you," she asked.
"It's cold and feels like the wind passing by," I explained.
"Oh," I put my arms around her.
"Do you feel anything?" I asked her.
"Um, I don't know. It's like my brain doesn't react to touch so I am unsure of it is happening or not but it almost feels like it. I just can't hold on to that feeling for long," she explained.
"Oh."
"Yeah."
We both stayed quiet and I soon fell asleep still with my arms wrapped around Camila. The next day, I went to school like normal but everyone in town and at school was excited about the October Festival. Miguel and Jennifer were the only ones who looked just as grumpy as I did.
"Hey bro, did you hear, Vanessa is going to ask Miguel to the festival," Marco said as he tapped my shoulder.
"Can you say rejection," Thomas added.
"She is hot though," Bill said.
"He isn't over and wouldn't do that to Camila," Marco said.
"Dude, chill, and anyways are you going to leave a flower on her locker," Thomas said to Marco.
"Yeah," Marco said. "In a minute," Marco told me that most students leave a white rose for Camila on her locker on this day and on the day she died. They told me this was her favorite festival and was even named fall fairy seven times. It is a title given to any girl in town from the age of 5 to 11. I guess Camila really was well-liked. I mean one look at her locker and it told you people liked her. There were so many flowers. As Marco placed his flowers I noticed some cards and notes. I picked one up and read it out loud. As I did I saw Camila smile from the corner of my eyes.
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING? DON'T TOUCH THAT," Miguel shouted as he shoved me into the lockers next to Camila's.
"Ethan," I heard Camila shout.
"What is your problem. You didn't even know her. Don't touch her stuff," Miguel huffed.
"Dude, relax, he didn't mean anything by it," Marco said to Miguel.
"Whatever," Miguel left his flower and then walked away.
"Why didn't he leave a white rose," I asked Marco as I readjusted myself.
"Oh, he always leaves her a pink rose, since they are her favorite," Thomas told me. "Isn't that sweet."
"Yeah, so sweet," I replied sarcastically.
"It isn't my favorite flower," Camila noted. "Gerbera Daisies are especially pink ones but sssh don't tell anyone." I smiled and I noticed Marco and the guys looking at me funny. I figured I would leave a pink gerbera daisy for her tomorrow.
After school was over, I decided to stick around and hang with Marco, Thomas, and Bill. They weren't that bad and they were easy to talk to too. They were a riot to listen to that's for sure. I didn't want to go home and change and I guess neither of the guys was going to either so we hung around the school until the festival started. Camila on the other hand changed her outfit. She decided to wear a dark orange T-shirt dress. I had never seen her in a dress before. She looked really nice. As soon as the festival got started Marco and the guys led me to the games. Throwing a ball at a punch of bottles was a piece of cake. At that moment, all I wanted to do was give this little stuffed bunny to Camila. I didn't think this was going to be torture but watching her smiling face made it worth it. She held my hand the entire time and I didn't care how weird that looked. I was having a good time with her.
Suddenly, we all heard shouting and looked around to see where it was coming from.
"Jennifer please, talk to me," I heard Miguel say. He looked more depressed than usual.
"Leave me alone, please," she said desperately.
"Why can't we talk, why can't we hang out, why can't you look at me," he said to her.
"ARE YOU SERIOUS," she said. "After everything."
"Please, just let's talk about it, I just want to make things right," he said.
"You think you can make things right," she shouted. "Don't you remember what happened the last time you tried to make things right." I looked over to Camila and she was crying. I was shocked at first that she could cry but then I grabbed her hand and led her away from the scene in front of us.
"Hey, you okay?" I asked her.
"Yeah, I just wish they wouldn't be so sad anymore," she said.
"I wish you would tell me," I said knowing she knew what I was talking about.
"I can't, It still hurts," she said. "but it's not their fault. It's all my fault."
