She looked surprised to see me but was able to regain her composure immediately that I almost missed her shock. She went pale and got tensed but tried really hard to hide it behind her sly smile before turning her back to me.
She ushered me inside to the kitchen, she sat behind the bar and I sat opposite to her. She gripped the knife handle to cut the apple which was already sliced in two, she started cutting the two halves in two as I watched her fingers grip the knife handle rather too tight.
I was all smiles the whole damn time, because that was what I do best. Even though I was feeling so differently, I used to smile so damn wide in front of everybody. I mastered the pretense for two years.
