“No, they live around the corner,” Steiner Beck was saying as Kirstin approached. “They’re not trying to escape. How could they, they’re in their pajamas.” Karl Hofer looked at the elderly couple standing in the back of the troop truck. They were trembling, their eyes wide, bound in handcuffs. “Release them,” he said to the two men guarding them.
