Karl Hofer walked down the pavement to the church steps, where he met an officer and two soldiers coming around the building. “How many?” he asked. “We can’t say for sure, sir,” the officer replied. “Six, maybe more.” “And none were apprehended?” “No, sir.” “Any witnesses?” “Yes, a man and woman who claim to live nearby.
