The Shadow Trial

502 Words
Elara couldn’t sleep. The shadows from last night still haunted the corners of her room, clinging like smoke to the walls. Every creak of the house made her jump. Every gust of wind outside whispered faintly, almost like voices calling her name. Her phone buzzed again. She hesitated before picking it up. **Unknown:** *You survived the first purge. Others haven’t.* Elara’s heart raced. “Others? Who?” The reply appeared slowly: **Unknown:** *Those who were erased before you. They are trying to reach you.* Before she could ask anything else, the phone buzzed again with a new message. **Unknown:** *Follow the signals. They are in the shadows.* --- Elara woke Kieran. “They’re… others,” she whispered. “People like me. They survived, partially, and they’re trying to communicate.” Kieran frowned. “And you can hear them now?” “I don’t know,” she admitted. “But the messages are real. I think… they’re calling for help.” He nodded. “Then we need to find them. Whoever’s out there might know how to stop this.” --- The first clue came the next morning. On her way to school, her phone buzzed again: **Unknown:** *Red mailbox. Corner of 12th and Willow. Midnight.* Elara felt a shiver run down her spine. Kieran grabbed her hand. “This is dangerous,” he said. “We don’t even know what’s waiting there.” “I don’t care,” she said, gripping his hand tightly. “If someone like me is out there… I need to find them.” --- That night, they waited by the corner of 12th and Willow. A single red mailbox stood in the shadows, illuminated by the dim glow of a streetlamp. Kieran and Elara approached cautiously. As they got closer, the mailbox rattled—lightly at first, then violently. Elara opened it. Inside was a small envelope, sealed with wax. Her name was written in a trembling hand. She opened it carefully. Inside was a note: *“If you’re reading this, you are alive. We exist, but not fully. Meet us at the abandoned train station at midnight tomorrow. We are waiting.”* Her hands shook. “They exist. Real people. Just like me.” Kieran frowned. “And if it’s a trap?” Elara shook her head. “We don’t have a choice. If they’re alive… if they’re like me… we can’t leave them behind.” --- Back home, they prepared for the meeting. Elara’s room was silent. The shadows still lingered at the edges, but they no longer seemed aggressive—more… watching. Waiting. Her phone buzzed one last time before she went to sleep: **Unknown:** *Tomorrow will be dangerous. Trust only the light.* Elara hugged the note close. She closed her eyes. Somewhere out there, others like her were waiting. They were echoes of people who had been forgotten. And together, maybe, they could survive. But she didn’t know yet if the world would let them. ## 🌑 End of episode 9
