Chapter 4: The Goddess

1350 Words
Having been a live-in son-in-law of the Walker Family for two years, Christopher had long experienced the formidable nature of his mother-in-law. He was utterly terrified of Mrs. Jessica. "Christopher, pack your things. Tomorrow, head to the civil affairs bureau with Mia to get the divorce papers, and then move out of the Walker Family," Mrs. Jessica commanded with an authoritative tone. "Mom..." "I'm not your mother! Stop calling me that!" Mrs. Jessica snapped. "A... Aunty," Christopher took a deep breath, bowed his head, and said, "I genuinely love Mia, and we've been married for two years..." "Thud!" Mrs. Jessica slapped the coffee table, stood up, and her face twisted with anger. "Two years of marriage, and you've been living off us without contributing anything to this family. My daughter is so outstanding, what right do you have to love her? What can you offer her?" Faced with Mrs. Jessica's relentless questioning, Christopher wanted to defend himself, but she wouldn't give him a chance to speak. "I've put up with you for two years. What else can you do besides cooking and housework? Look at your shabby self, do you think you're worthy of my daughter? Do you even know how sought-after my daughter is? Just now, Michael called me, saying if Mia were with him, he'd immediately offer a dowry of ten million." Ten million for a dowry, is that supposed to impress me? Michael was merely a supplier for the Bennett Family. If his mother wasn't part of the Bennett lineage, how could he even become a supplier for them? Moreover, his uncle, the clan leader of the Bennett Family, had personally assured him that Michael would be bankrupt by tonight. By then, he wouldn't even have two hundred, let alone ten million. "Aunty, I can divorce, but it must be Mia who tells me herself. Otherwise, I won't leave." With that, Christopher turned and walked away. "How dare you talk to me like that! Get back here, or you'll be sorry!" It was the first time Christopher had defied her, and Mrs. Jessica was momentarily stunned. By the time she snapped back to reality, Christopher was already too far away to catch up. As the sun set, Mia sighed deeply, having spent the entire day locked in her office. The video of Christopher had spread throughout the company, and someone had even uploaded it online, making him the laughingstock of everyone, dragging her into the mess as well. She rubbed her temples and slowly walked out of the office. Just then, a receptionist approached with a box. "Ms. Walker, your package." An eagle-eyed colleague gasped, "Wow, what a fancy box! Is it made of crystal? That's over the top!" "I mean, what kind of gift could match a box like that?" "It's my first time seeing a package box made of crystal." "I'm dying to know what's inside." "Yeah, Ms. Walker, why don't you open it?" the office girls chimed in. Though Mia was strict at work, she was quite amiable after hours, without any airs, so she had a good rapport with her colleagues. Seeing all those curious eyes, Mia was also puzzled. Who sent this package? She hadn't ordered anything recently. In the end, she succumbed to their pleading eyes. She thought for a moment and slowly opened the box. As the box creaked open, everyone's eyes widened in anticipation. Inside the box lay a necklace, its sky-blue gemstone so pure it captured every gaze. Under the office lights, it shimmered brilliantly. Everyone was dumbfounded. The female employees exchanged glances, speechless, the room fell silent until one exclamation broke the spell. "This... this looks like 'Sky Castle'!" "Oh my God, are you talking about the 'Sky Castle' necklace, the masterpiece by French jewelry maestro Alan?" "That series only has 18 pieces, and I remember one fetched a staggering 20 million dollars at the Gulf Auction House this year!" "So beautiful! If someone gifted me a necklace like this, I'd be their lifelong lover... Ms. Walker, you must be thrilled!" Amidst the gasps and envious whispers, Mia was speechless. The 'Sky Castle' necklace was Alan's crowning achievement, her favorite series, and with just one look, she was certain this necklace was genuine! This gift was unbelievably extravagant. Mia's long-dormant heart began to flutter; it was all too surreal. Could it be that Michael had spent his entire fortune to buy her this necklace? Mia was overwhelmed with emotions; denying her feelings would be a lie. If she wore this necklace to the annual gala tonight, she would undoubtedly be the center of attention. Meanwhile, at the Sea and Sky Feast KTV in West River City. This was the most renowned KTV in West River City, frequented by the rich and famous, with luxury cars lining the entrance, far beyond the reach of ordinary folks. And this was the venue for the class reunion. Christopher arrived on his newly bought scooter, reaching the Sea and Sky Feast in no time. He parked at the entrance and locked it up, not wanting it to get stolen. He had intended to buy a car, but time was too tight. In a rush, he had bought an Emma Electric Vehicle instead. As he locked up, a blaring horn painfully pierced his eardrums. "Hey, move it! What's a junky electric scooter doing in a parking spot?" The Porsche owner leaned out of the window, shouting angrily. Christopher looked up, stunned, and so was the man! "Cody!" Christopher ran over, recognizing the driver as his high school classmate, Cody. "Class President?" Cody stepped out of the car, wallet in hand, his hair slicked back. He gave Christopher a once-over, sneering, "Christopher, how did you end up like this?" Christopher awkwardly rubbed his nose, about to speak, when Cody turned away, striding into the KTV. Was he being looked down upon? Christopher chuckled awkwardly and followed him inside. By now, most of the classmates had arrived. The two entered the private room one after the other, and as the door opened, all eyes turned towards them. "Well, if it isn't Cody! You're looking more dashing by the day. Success suits you!" As soon as Cody walked in, the room buzzed with excitement. Seats were offered, toasts were made, and Cody instantly became the center of attention. Who could have imagined that the class's former underachiever would rise to such success? His suit was unmistakably designer, and the Porsche key fob in his hand was the cherry on top. If that isn't the picture of success, what is? In stark contrast stood Christopher, the former class president, dressed in bargain-bin clothes and holding the key to his Emma electric scooter. If not for his strikingly handsome face, he could easily be mistaken for a delivery guy who stumbled in by accident. But who cares about looks when you're dressed like that? No one seemed eager to chat with him. Despite the awkwardness, Christopher remained unfazed, scanning the crowd until his gaze settled on someone. Her name was Lily, and it had been years since he last laid eyes on her. She had shed her youthful innocence, blossoming into a sophisticated beauty. Lily was the undisputed goddess of their graduating class. She sat gracefully on the sofa in a white dress, chatting with a classmate. When something amused her, she laughed, her charming dimples making her look incredibly sweet. Cody's eyes landed on Lily the moment he walked in. Ignoring everyone else, he slid over to her side and said, "Lily, it's been years! You're more beautiful than ever. What have you been up to?" Before Lily could respond, the girl beside her chimed in, "You have no idea how amazing Lily is now. Soon, you might only see her on TV." "What do you mean?" Cody blinked, puzzled. "Our Lily has been spotted by a talent scout from Vision Entertainment. It won't be long before she's one of their artists," the girl explained. Like a stone cast into a pond, the revelation sent ripples of astonishment through the room, turning all eyes to Lily.
