The Bella POV
I push the door carefully and pause before going in. Caleb is sitting behind the giant desk. A pile of spilled papers is in front of him. He is going to be officially the Alpha very soon, and he has already started taking duties from his father. A feeling of deep longing and affection spreads in my chest. Caleb is my fate. We were supposed to do this together. I was supposed to be the Luna by his side. We had to do this together, all of it. The good, the bad, all the hard times. I remember my daughter's face last night- I never ant to see her so sad again, thinking her father doesn't love her.
I take a step in, pushing the door closed, and he looks up. His expression is confused, but as I approach, he becomes irritated.
“What are you doing here?” He asks, dropping the sheet of paper he was holding.
“Caleb, we need to speak,” I begin. “We can’t leave things like this. “
“I have nothing to discuss with you, ” he gets up and walks towards the door. I move instinctively towards him.
I wrap my hands around his forearms.
“ Listen to me,” I begin, and he finally looks at me. Now is my chance to save whatever we have left. Now is the only time I will be able to speak to him alone. Maybe not all is lost. He might listen to me.
“We can't throw away all those years. We can’t give up on everything we have built together.”
Caleb makes a face.
“We haven’t built anything together,” his tone is harsh. “You are just an Omega, Bella.”
“So? The goddess brought us together! it was meant to be! No one is stronger than their fate! Our connection is more powerful than whatever status each one of us holds.”
Caleb snorts.
“You have completely lost your mind,” he tries to push me away, but I won’t let go.
“No,” I protest, “Don’t you see it? Emma is using you! She wants to destroy our family. Us.”
This is when Caleb’s face darkens. He shifts and grabs me, my back hitting the wall. Caleb looms over me, threateningly.
“If you ever say anything against Emma again, you will regret it.”
I search his eyes. There is so much disdain for me there.
“You know I am right,” I whisper, “We are your family. You are the father of my children. We can’t just …”
“Enough,” he snarls. “I am tired of you and your nonsense. Why are you even here?! I told you I don’t want to see you!”
“How can’t you see it?” I plead, “All those years together, everything we went through. We are fated to be together.”
“I rejected you, Bella. I am going to marry Emma next week, and nothing will change that.
No matter how much you beg and humiliate yourself. It’s over, accept it.”
“It’s not humiliation when it comes to the ones you love!” I protest, “I will fight for this! “
I never had a real, happy family. I swore mine will be different, I won't let my family be destroyed, I will fight till the end.
Caleb doesn’t answer. He lets go of me and steps away. Caleb is standing with his back to me, and I am overtaken by fear- it suddenly becomes very tangible. Caleb is no longer mine; he doesn't want me to be here. I can feel it; his entire body is emitting it.
I can no longer sense his wolf. Like the connection was never there in the first place.
“I want you gone,” he repeats without looking at me. “And I don’t mean gone from the castle. I want you gone from the pack.”
“What?!” I gasp, “No! You can’t do this!”
“I can do whatever I want.”
Then he goes back to his desk and takes his seat like I wasn’t even there.
“She has poisoned your mind,” I yell, “it’s all her fault!”
“I told you, “ Caleb warns me, “One more word and you will regret everything you’ve done so far.”
Something in me snaps. He is so blind to what is going on, it’s like she’s put a spell on him, and he can no longer think rationally. But I won’t let go, I cannot save whatever we had between us. However, I am not leaving without my kids; this is what I came for in the first place. They are my world, and I won’t have him deny me my kids.
“I can write a recommendation letter for you to join another pack, “ he says, disinterested. My anger grows, and I close my hands in tight fists.
“I am not leaving,” I declare, but he continues as if I never said anything.
“I won’t mention your disgrace. Our neighbors to the south are a big and strong pack. They will accept you.”
“I am not going anywhere!” My voice is raised, and I don’t care if anyone hears me.
“Don’t make me call the guards to kick you out,” Caleb says evenly.
I hold his gaze. I have to negotiate for my children; I have no choice.
“Fine.” I say, “I will leave. But I want my children to come with me.”
Caleb is serious for a brief moment. Then he bursts out laughing.
“No.” He says after the laughing has subsided. “You are delusional, I told you. You are never taking my son. He is going to be the alpha one day. There is no way I will allow Nicholas to spend even one more minute with a weakling like you. What are you going to teach him? How to be a disgrace? Get a grip, Bella. “
Then he leans back in his chair.
“You can take the girl,” Caleb says. He doesn’t even call her by her name.
Bile rises in my throat. Caleb has become so cold, so cruel to me.
“Well?” He asks when I don’t respond. “Take the girl and get out.”
I shift in my spot. I have no choice- I have to agree, I have to make him believe I accept this. And when the time comes, I will take my son. They won’t be prepared for it. They will think I agreed to this.
“Alright.”
I stand straighter and clear my throat, “I will take Violet and leave the pack.”
“You
finally came to your senses,” Caleb says.
But he has no idea what I am going to do. He underestimates me and my love for my kids. The wedding is only in a week.
I have enough time to prepare the plan by then.
