Jack stared wide-eyed at Cedric like the latter was out of his mind. He shifted his gaze to me and then back to his friend.
"Maybe I didn't hear correctly or my head is being disoriented after being hit by the football numerous times," he said, "but I thought I just heard you call that wolf, Tori."
"I did," Cedric replied, still not taking his eyes away from me.
"That's nuts," Jack snapped, though the hint of fear was still evident in his voice. "That's not Tori. It's a wolf!"
"Which happens to be Tori." Cedric took his eyes away from me to reply to his friend, giving him a blank gaze as if he said the most obvious thing in the world.
Jack's visible confusion was enough to make things even more complicated and I had to step in.
'Its okay,' I sent a mind link to Cedric. 'I'll just change back to normal and explain everything.'
Cedric nodded.
I spun round and disappeared into the woods. From the distance I could hear Jack sigh.
"Okay, Awkward moment number one diffused," he said. "Let's move to awkward moment number two. What's up with you?"
"What do you mean?" I heard Cedric retort.
"What do I mean? First of all, you look suddenly jacked up within twenty four hours. Next, you talk to an animal like it's a human being. Even going further as to call it our friend. Is there something I should know?"
"That's because she talked! At least with her mind thing stuff. It's complicated, but I swear I heard her talk! Didn't you?"
"Umm...No. If I did, I wouldn't be asking you these questions now, would I?"
I had cut off the tension between the two friends before it escalated. I shifted back to my human form and put on my clothes. I walked out into the open and stood before the two friends.
Jack just stared at me like a deer caught in the headlights. He opened his mouth but words could not form until a few seconds later.
"Tori?" His voice was barely audible.
"Hello." I smiled awkwardly and gave a nervous wave to the duo.
"Ha! I knew it." Cedric said. "That was you, right? That white wolf?"
"Yes, that was me. And no, that wasn't a wolf, it was a werewolf." I shrugged as if I was giving a normal update.
"Werewolf?!" Cedric and Jack yelled simultaneously, their blue eyes wide with shock.
"Yes." I nodded.
"Werewolf? As in lycanthrope?" Jack asked again, his facial expression making him look like he could faint anytime.
"Yes." I sighed irritably at his question. "I believe werewolves are Lycanthropes. I thought we've gone through this before."
"But...H..how?" Jack tilted his head sideways. Cedric scratched his head also waiting for an explanation.
"You mean how is it possible to be a werewolf or how did werewolf come to existence?" I smirked slightly. "All I can say is that I don't really know the origins. But all I know is that we've existed for a long time. And as for how to be a werewolf, it's by birth."
I shifted my gaze towards Cedric.
"There's something you need to know," I said.
"What's that?" he asked.
I paused and studied his expression hoping he was ready for what came next. He seemed calm enough so this was going to be easy.
"You're a werewolf." I finally dropped the bombshell.
"What!" Cedric's mouth fell open.
'On second thought, this was harder than I expected," I thought.
"That's not possible." Cedric shook his head. "I can't be a werewolf. It just doesn't make sense."
"Come on, Cedric." I huffed. "You really think you could just go to bed overnight and become juiced up the next day. Then pass football training with ease, even physically matching up with someone almost two times your size and weight?"
Cedric scratched his head and a thoughtful expression reflected on his face. Jack glanced in a worried fashion at his friend.
"I had my suspicions earlier today when I saw you but I wasn't sure," I continued." I tracked you here by scent and...."
"Discovered that I was the only one who could hear you." Cedric finished, a sigh escaping his lips.
I nodded.
"So the whole changes happening to me. The sudden strength and speed wasn't just a stroke of luck." He sighed again.
I shook my head.
"But you said werewolves exists by birth." Jack finally said, his eyebrows knitted together in confusion. "Why is it now all these is happening?"
I blew a loose strand of hair away from my face.
"Honestly, I wish I knew," I said. "Cedric is the second werewolf that is just getting his abilities now, me being the first."
"You weren't born with your abilities?" Cedric asked.
"No. I was just like you. I woke up one day feeling different. Physically and psychologically." I replied. "Tell me something, do you hear a second voice within you at some moments? Most times, disagreeing with you."
"Yeah." Cedric nodded. "I usually think it's just my conscience or something."
"That's your wolf. It's a side of you that's a part of you but also different," I explained.
Cedric and Jack stared at me blankly.
"It's complicated." I released a frustrated groan.
"Cedric, I have to give you a heads up." I faced the blonde. " You will experience bouts of aggression and may lash out at anything and anyone every once in a while."
"What?" Cedric's eyes widened and Jack glanced at his friend in discomfort.
"Yeah. It's what got me in this city in the first place." I said, lowering my gaze a bit. " That's a story for another time. But as for you, Cedric, you need to learn how to control your wolf."
Cedric stared ahead at the setting sun, a lost expression on his face. The whole thing seemed to make sense now but i could understand if he was still trying to get to terms with it. It was still out-of-the-blue after all.
"I don't get something, though," he finally said. " Why didn't my mum mention this to me?"
"That, I can't answer," I said. "But has she ever given you hints that she was a werewolf? Abilities, behaviours...anything?"
"No." He shook his head with a frown.
"One more thing." I breathed deeply, my mind going back to moments prior to revealing myself to the boys. "Did you feel anything before I came here? Like a sudden change in your heartbeat? Your heart beating faster than normal?"
"No." Cedric shook his head in confusion.
I gaped.
'Thats not possible,' My wolf said from within. 'He's supposed to be our mate. How could he not feel the bond?'
"Are you sure? " I asked again.
"Positive." Cedric nodded.
I sighed and stared at the sky. The sun had long gone and darkness was starting to approach fast.
"Call it a day, boys." I faced them. " I'll explain more about this tomorrow. At the moment, let's keep this between the three of us."
I said the last sentence particularly to Jack who was still fidgeting on the spot. Jack stared at me and I narrowed my eyes at him. He swallowed, beads of sweat forming on his forehead.
"Will do." Cedric picked up the football and nodded to me.
"Goodnight." I disappeared into the woods, leaving the duo behind me.
As I walked back home, I noticed their scent getting fainter, meaning they had left the field. Something bothered me. Why was I the only one who felt the wolf bond? My parents may need to do more explanation.
Speaking of which, when i got home, I met them in the living room. Mum was reading a novel and Dad watched a football game.
"Hey, honey." Mum smiled as soon as she saw me. "Your dinner is in the microwave. You can have a shower and eat."
I said nothing. I just stared at them.
"Tori." Dad turned his attention away from the television to her in a worried gaze. " Are you alright?"
I let out a deep breath and broke the news.
"Mum? Dad? I think I've found my mate."
