Uncle Wes looked like he was having one of the worst moments of his life. I had never seen him this disoriented before. About an hour into the lecture, he had managed to make many errors. Jumbling his sentences and getting the facts wrong provided mild entertainment for the rest of the students in the class. Some laughing, some in awe. At a point he had even stopped talking and looked like he was in a trance. His eyes seemed to be looking at us but they were vacant.
"Sir?" One of his student,a lanky teen with large eyeglasses, raised a hand.
Uncle Wes shook his head and blinked back to reality.
"Right, Trevor." He nodded to the student. "What is your question?"
"I wasn't going to ask a question," Trevor replied. "I wanted to say you stopped during the lecture."
"Of course," Uncle Wes muttered, wiping sweat from his forehead, despite the fact that the air conditioner was on. "So as I was saying, Prometheus made a deal with the keeper of death in the underworld that if he...."
"Sir." A female student raised her hand, interrupting him again. "That wasn't Prometheus. That was Sisyphus."
Uncle Wes blinked. A low groan escaped his lips as he realised he had made yet another error again to the amusement of most of the students now, some of which were stuffing laughs. I mentally facepalmed. What in the moon goddess was going through his mind?
Beside me, Cedric and Jack shared looks of surprise as they witnessed my uncle try to get himself out of the akwardness.
"Your uncle is on a roll today," Cedric leaned sideways to whisper towards me. "And not the good kind."
"Why thank you, Captain Obvious." I glowered at him.
At the moment, I was regretting telling the boys about her blood ties with my uncle days after they first met. But that was by the way. My frown changed to worry when i saw the helpless look on my uncle's face. He looked like there was something heavy weighing in on his mind. He was always composed in everything he did so this was a bit of concern to me.
Uncle Wes opened his mouth to utter something when the bell rang. Everyone hurriedly packed their stuff and began to troop out quickly. I could still hear some giggles and chuckles as some made their way out of the door. Uncle Wes didn't even have the will to try to cordinate them. He went to to his seat and rested his face in his palms.
I followed the boys until they reached the door.
"Um, guys?" I called out. "You go on. I'll catch up later."
Cedric and Jack stared at each other befuddled. Then they turned their gazes back to me. On seeing my gesture towards my uncle, they nodded in understanding.
"Sure thing," Cedric said. "Don't take long."
The two boys made their exit.
Uncle Wes raised his face from his palms as I approached. He saw my inquisitive gaze and a tired sigh escaped his lips.
"Hey, Uncle G," I said. He looked dishevelled with bloodshot eyes and bags underneath them. His normally styled hair was messy.
"Hey, kiddo" He returned my greeting with a tired smile. "Sorry, I had a really slow day at the office today."
"No kidding," I snorted, drawing a seat nearby and sitting opposite him.
"You mind telling me what made you provide an unusually entertaining display for us today?" I queried.
Uncle Wes fell silent. His thoughtful look became visible as he narrowed his eyes staring at the table.
"Uncle Wes?" I prodded.
" I caught scent of a vampire last night," he finally spoke.
"What!" My eyes nearly popped out. Uncle Wes raised his hand up and down swiftly, signalling me to lower my voice.
I had never set eyes on a vampire before even after hearing of the tale of Sylvian from my parents. I had no idea how to handle this sort of news.
"In this city?" I asked in a lower tone. "Where you able to track it?"
"No." He shook his head. "He was way too fast. I also saw the Principal last night."
"Principal Arnold?" I raised my eyebrows. "Any idea if he was with the vamp..."
"No, Tori. I'm not sure." Uncle Wes shook his head. "If he was, I would have caught the scent on him. Then again.... It's...complicated."
"How so?" I asked.
"The scent of vampires, while easily detectable, can be annoyingly difficult to track for long unlike humans. Well, it depends on how old the vampire is." Uncle Wes explained.
I scratched my head in confusion.
"It sounded like I spoke Russian or something, right." Uncle Wes chuckled.
"Something like that." I nodded. " But still, why are they vampires in this city? Dad told me they haven't been seen at all in the last...."
"Sixteen years." Uncle Wes completed my sentence I saw something in his eyes. Something I had never seen in quite a long time. Pain.
"Uncle Wes?" I said. "There's something else you're not telling me."
"What do you mean?"
"It almost seems like there was something that happened sixteen years ago. Something to do with a vampire." I narrowed my eyes.
"Nothing really gets past you, Kiddo." Uncle Wes sighed.
"Eh." I shrugged with a smug grin.
"Tori." Uncle Wes reached forward and held my hand, his eyes a reflection of sadness. "Yes, there was something that happened. But the memories sting like hell. With what I'm dealing with at the moment, I can't tell you now. But I promise you that in the nearest future, I will."
"You promise?" I frowned.
"I give you my word."
A heavy silence hung in the air for a while. My thoughts drifted from the current news to the discovery of the previous night. Cedric. I looked up to see Uncle Wes gazing suspiciously at me.
"What?" I said.
"Okay kiddo." He cleared his throat. "Spill."
"What?" I repeated again with an innocent look.
"You're not the only one who is perceptive, you know." Uncle Wes grinned. "What are you hiding?"
I squirmed on her seat, twiddling my fingers in typical teenage girl fashion.
"It's Cedric," I said.
"Ah, your blonde talkative friend." Uncle Wes chuckled. " What about him?"
"Well, he's a..." I shifted in my seat, looking away.
"Werewolf." Uncle Wes finished for me.
My eyes widened and i faced him. His smile was gone and he now had a blank look on his face.
"Wait, you knew?" I asked.
"Duh." He rolled his eyes. "It takes one werewolf to know another one."
He tapped his nose twice.
I groaned and leaned back into my seat.
"Like your parents and I have said, you really need to get accustomed to your powers. You couldn't even detect him until quite later. I noticed the moment he stepped into the school. You see why I said you need to let my friend examine you. With the way things are, I believe there's the need to examine Cedric too. The both of you are the first new generation werewolves and that means we need to thread caution."
I nodded and exhaled.
"So are you willing to go for the check up?" he asked.
I nodded again.
"Excellent. Now let's...."
"Uncle Wes " I stared at him uneasily. "About Cedric, there's another thing you need to know."
"Okay..." He paused.
"Cedric..." My voice came out as almost a squeak to my own surprise "...is my mate."
"Wait....what?" His glasses nearly slipped off his nose. He adjusted it and stared at his niece to see if this was a prank. The serious look I put on my face told him otherwise.
"Wow." He grinned a bit. " This is really something. At such a young age. I've never heard of this before. I guess there's more to you young werewolves that meets the eye. Do your parents know about this?"
"Yeah. I told them."
"I'm sure your dad must have been thrilled."
"Oh, he was. That was after initially entering shock mode and not moving from his spot. Mum and I thought he was paralyzed." I chuckled.
"Of course." Uncle Wes shook his head with a sigh. "So how are you guys handling the whole thing? You and Cedric, that is."
"That's the issue." I groaned. "I don't think he knows that he's my mate."
"Say what now?" Uncle Wes frowned. " How is that possible?"
"I asked him the day I discovered and the day I felt the mate bond. But he said he didn't feel anything." I sighed.
"This...makes no sense." Uncle Wes scratched his chin. "Something is wrong somewhere. Are you sure you felt the mate bond. Did your heart...."
"All of a sudden beat multiple times than normal at the detection of another werewolf?" I said. " Yes. Yes, it did. And he was the only werewolf I saw."
"So why didn't he feel the same thing?" My uncle's brows knitted together in confusion.
"I don't know," I replied, frustrated. "I don't know. Can't you help me make him know or something?"
"Oh no, Kiddo." Uncle Wes raised his hands defensively. "I'm not going to play match maker between you two. This is something you have to do on your own. If he's your mate, you have to tell him yourself."
"Terrific." I let out a loud groan and stood up. "Well, this was a good talk."
I headed towards the door.
"Don't worry, Kiddo. I'll be cheering for you." I heard Uncle Wes stiffle a laugh behind me.
"Yeah, from afar." I rolled my eyes. "That is so comforting."
I spotted the two boys by their lockers chatting. They perked up as i walked over.
"Well, that was a long talk," Cedric said. "Is he okay?"
"Oh, he is now." I rolled my eyes as the image of my Uncle's mischievous grin replayed in my mind while I left the class.
"So what's up? What next?" Cedric asked, his blue eyes lighten up in curiousity. Jack tucked in his hands into this pockets, waiting patiently.
'What's up?' My wolf snapped. 'How about acknowledging us as your mate and let's explore that.....'
"Okay," I quickly said aloud before my wolf could put impure thoughts in my mind.
I chuckled nervously then cleared my throat at the boys' confused stare at my akward disposition.
"Cedric." I faced the blonde. "Get ready for your first lesson soon."
