They arrived at the hospital and entered James’s room at eleven-fifteen. They found Maria sitting in the chair beside his bed, both hands wrapped around his fingers. James appeared much more alert this morning and was sitting up in bed. They were deep in conversation and Lori and Jason hesitated in the doorway. James noticed them first. “It’s okay,” he said. “Come on in.” Maria smiled as they approached the bed, leaning back in her chair. “We were just talking while we waited for you,” she said. “You look much better!” Lori told James with all sincerity. James’s eyebrows arose in surprise. “I’ve already seen myself in a mirror this morning. How bad did I look yesterday?” he asked, horrified. “You look more alert,” Lori said firmly.
