CHAPTER ONE
"Get out of my house!" Sounded a deep masculine voice.
"It's over between us" Duke roared
"What have I done to you?, How have I gone wrong"
"Why are you sending me away like a piece of trash" She asked in a calm and worried tone
"What has gotten any over you" she asked still awe
She had thought Duke was playing the whole drama until he dragged her clothes pushing her out.
"You're sending me out of your house after all these years. After what we have shared, you are now treating me as if I'm worth nothing to you," she said, knowing that Duke was not playing.
"What is wrong Duke?" She said with tears streaming down her cheeks
That was the first time she addressed him by his first name.
She rose to her feet heading towards the door. She left.
Duke slammed the door.
Kyra came out from the room where she was eavesdropping on Duke's conversation with Emilia after instigating violence between them.
"She is a pretender, I told you several times that this girl didn't deserve you.
Shedding crocodile tears as if she had ever loved you, like I said earlier she had been cheating on you with her neighbor.
You could have asked her about her affair with him" Kyra said to Duke giving him every reason to leave her.
She went close to Duke and leaned on him
"It's alright honey, she is gone now"
"Don't worry yourself dear, I'm here for you" she spoke in a calm but petting voice.
Kyra always had eyes on Duke, she was waiting for a perfect opportunity to maximize it.
Duke's parents wanted him to marry Kyra because she graduated with first class from Harvard Law School. This marriage was tied to his inheritance.
Back at her house, Emilia thought about what had changed in their relationship. What must have prompted Duke to order her out of his house?
"I haven't done wrong to him, all I did was love him"
"But what did he do, he abandoned me like a piece of trash" she soliloquizes as she sobs.
•••••••••••••••••••
"Good morning Sir" the receptionist greeted the Boss of the Telecommunications company that Emilia works at.
"Good morning, Please tell Miss. Emilia Clarkson to meet me in my office"
"Okay sir…"
He quickly entered his office.
Some minutes later, Emilia came around the reception.
"The CEO wants to see you in his office" the receptionist delivered his message aptly
"Hope all is well?" she asked the Receptionist
"Yes, sure"
"Knock! Knock!!" She knocked at the CEO's door.
"Yes, you can come in" replied the bossy CEO.
"Good morning Sir" she greeted
"Good morning to you" (Throws a letter to her on the table).
She picked up the letter from the table and glanced at it…
"Sir, A Sack Letter?"
"Yes, what does it look like? You have been sacked from this company and you are to forfeit the company's properties in your care within 24 hours"
"Sir, I have been diligent and discharged my duties accordingly, what could warrant this letter? What have I done??" She rained questions on her boss while crying
She left the office with tears in her eyes. Her life is turning upside down.
•••••••••••••••••••••
Emilia stood at the cafeteria door as she recounted how her life had turned into shambles from the moment her boyfriend Duke jilted her, and now her losing her job.
"Where do I go from here" "I don't even have enough money to continue my job hunt" she lamented with tears in her eyes.
She rushed in to get a coffee to calm her troubled nerves since it was the only coffee she could afford.
"I want a black coffee, thank you" She quickly made her order.
"Upon my honors in Business Administration, I was still rejected by companies, If it's not that I am overqualified it will be that the income is too low, How has my life been such a downward spiral at this age"
Why couldn't I get a job?
Maybe you are not experienced like you always say
She thought as she waited for her order.
"Hey ma'am, your coffee is ready," Mumbled the guy behind the counter. Emilia collected the cup of coffee to a corner so she could reminisce about her journey of job hunting and how possibly she could get a job.
She hurriedly left the counter, and while leaving she collided with someone thereby spilling her coffee on his shirt
Ouch! You spilled coffee on my shirt
She gasped in horror "Oh my God, I'm so sorry, it wasn't intentional". she pleaded
Rubbing off the stain on the stained shirt, she figured out the monetary value of the shirt as she wiped it the more.
"Don't worry dear, I can get a new one, I figured it was a mistake and an accident did happen" said the stranger in a calm tone.
"s**t, I'm so sorry that I spilled coffee on your shirt" Emilia continued pleading.
Drew, the stranger perceived that Emilia must have been lost in thoughts which led to the collision, he thought to talk with her.
"Hi, I'm Richard Drew, and you?" He said with an empathetic voice
"I'm Emilia" indicated Emilia who has been admiring his beautiful steel eyes and his kindness.
"Do you mind sitting with me?" He said with a sense of pleading.
"It's never a problem" He led her to an unoccupied table, he sat down and she followed suit.
"So how are you doing Emilia?"
"I'm doing well, thank you" she replied inattentively.
Emilia felt that Drew was staring at her closely, this made her face feel warm.
"What has been bothering you, you don't seem okay from the look on your face or did you lose someone so dear to you?" Drew asked out of curiosity
She narrowed her eyes to him with her face donned with surprise
"He might have foreseen what I have been going through recently, Could it be that someone told him that my boyfriend so dear to me jilted me for another lady or could it be that he knows about my jobless predicament" she thought
"W-well I think you're right" she stuttered
"Do you mind sharing it with me? Maybe I can be of help in a little way I can"
"It's hard recounting the painful situations I have been through in the past months from my boyfriend leaving me to losing my job, my mind hasn't been at rest"
"Each day I question myself, who have I offended? Why has my life suddenly turned upside down, does it mean I'm inexperienced in my workplace? or perhaps I don't fit into the class of my lover"
Emilia painfully narrates how she has been helpless to Drew as tears rolled down her cheeks.
Drew, having known he had brought back painful memories she had neatly tucked away in the furthest corner of her brain, thought it wise to console her.
He drew closer to where she was sitting with a clear sense of sympathy, cuddling her in a calm tone.
She looked up to Drew wiping away her tears as she affirmed that "All is well"
Drew had always wanted to make order before the collision with Emilia. He thought that this was the right time
"How about I buy you cakes as we sit together? Do you fancy that?
He asked Emilia in a caring tone
She kept mute for some seconds
"I will take that as a yes"
" Let me quickly get some cakes and coffee, I will be right back"
He drew back the chair as he stood up going towards the counter to make an order, he surmounted the long queue which paved the way to the counter.
The customers seemed unfazed about it.
"Get me a black coffee and two slices of cake. Bring it over to the table I will be sitting at, soon." He smoothly ordered the cashier, who nodded frantically and ran back to get Drew's order.
Back to the table, Drew introduced himself as the managing director of a software company. He spoke about the Nitty-gritty of software in the Digital world.
"As you know, I'm Drew. I live right here in Boston, Massachusetts. I work as the manager director of DMD software company" Spoke Drew in a bossy tone
Emilia was puzzled because she had been hearing about the DMD software company back then in her former workplace.
"Uhhmm, Wow!, Isn't the DMD company the same as DMD Communications that collaborates with Harry Gary 's Telecommunications?" Emilia asked curiously.
"Yes, that's one of the branches of our company"
Emilia in her previous workplace had been printing mail from the DMD company and sending it to her boss.
"H-here you go, Mr. Richard" He stuttered, eyeing Drew warily.
He caught on his wrist, where an expensive-looking watch lay. "5 minutes"? What kept you this long?" Drew queried
"I'm a busy man, I won't appreciate my time being wasted" he asserted
"Be quicker next time"
"Y-yes sir, it won't happen again" the cashier gulped audibly. He scurried off, almost falling in the process.
He passed the cake to Emilia, he took the coffee and cake simultaneously as it trickled down his throat.
Drew, continued lecturing Emilia on his dealings in the software.
"How about you come to work in my company as my Assistant?" Drew asked in a confident tone
